In 2026, 5G is moving beyond coverage expansion toward more capable networks and specific services: Standalone (SA) deployments are growing, operators are beginning to sell network slicing, and 5G is increasingly used for home broadband. 5G-Advanced, RedCap devices and satellite integration are important directions too, but their availability depends on the operator, device, market and stage of deployment.

What is changing in 5G during 2026?

The main shift is from building out 5G access to using the network for more differentiated services. That does not mean every announced capability is available to every subscriber. The figures below are global industry snapshots from the named organizations, not a map of service availability in any one country.

Trend What the evidence shows What it means for users
5G Standalone GSA reported 95 operators with a launched SA service as of 20 April 2026; SA accounted for 29% of launched 5G services. SA is advancing, but most launched services in that count were still non-standalone.
Network slicing Ericsson counted 84 commercial 5G SA slicing offerings in its June 2026 Mobility Report, up from 65 six months earlier. Commercial offers are growing; the count does not measure customer take-up.
5G-Advanced The GSMA roadmap describes capability development across 2025–2027, including RedCap, network automation, positioning, NTN and XR optimization. These are standards and development directions, not a promise of universal launches in 2026.
5G fixed wireless access Ericsson reported that 71% of FWA service providers offer service over 5G in its June 2026 Mobility Report. 5G is an established part of the fixed-wireless broadband market, though local coverage and provider offers vary.
Scale of adoption Ericsson’s June 2026 Mobility Report put global 5G subscriptions at nearly 3.3 billion. Its 16 June 2026 press release reported 3.1 billion at the end of Q1 2026, after 162 million additions during that quarter. These are separate dated estimates, not one undated figure; they should not be treated as interchangeable.

Will 5G Standalone replace non-standalone in 2026?

SA and NSA are different network architectures

Non-standalone (NSA) 5G uses parts of existing 4G infrastructure alongside 5G radio access. Standalone (SA) uses a 5G core. That core provides a stronger foundation for capabilities such as network slicing and more advanced service differentiation, but having a 5G phone or seeing a 5G icon does not establish that a connection is using SA.

SA is advancing, but remains a minority of launched services

As of 20 April 2026, the Global mobile Suppliers Association (GSA) reported that 29% of launched 5G services were SA and 71% were NSA; it counted 95 operators that had launched an SA service. GSA describes SA as “the clearest marker of market maturity.” These figures indicate progress, not a universal switchover: operator configuration, device support and the plan or service all affect what a customer can use.

What does 5G-Advanced add?

5G-Advanced is an evolution of 5G standards and capabilities, not a single feature that switches on everywhere in 2026. The GSMA roadmap associates the start of 5G-Advanced with Release 18 and describes further development over 2025–2027.

Capabilities on the roadmap

  • Network automation and AI/ML: work toward more automated radio access network operations and optimization.
  • Energy savings: mechanisms intended to improve network energy efficiency.
  • Positioning and time-sensitive networking: capabilities relevant to location-aware and more precisely timed industrial applications.
  • XR optimization: network improvements intended to support extended-reality traffic.
  • RedCap evolution and NTN: continued work on lower-complexity 5G devices and non-terrestrial network integration.

A roadmap identifies technical direction; it does not establish that a feature will launch in every market, on every network, or by a particular date. Commercial availability depends on standards implementation, operator deployment and compatible devices.

Are network slices becoming a real commercial service?

Network slicing allows an operator to provide different network characteristics for particular services or customers over shared infrastructure. It could, for example, support a more specifically managed connection for an enterprise application than a general-purpose service, but the precise characteristics and use cases depend on the operator’s offer.

Ericsson reported 84 commercial 5G SA slicing offerings in June 2026, compared with 65 six months earlier. That is evidence of expanding commercial activity, not proof of mass consumer adoption or a guarantee of a particular speed, latency or service level. Buyers should check the actual terms and coverage of an operator’s offer.

What do RedCap and private networks mean for IoT and business?

RedCap targets devices that do not need smartphone-class complexity

Reduced Capability (RedCap) 5G is intended for devices that need 5G connectivity but not the full feature set and complexity of high-end smartphones. It is relevant to IoT and other connected equipment where capability, cost and power needs differ from those of a phone. The GSMA roadmap includes continuing RedCap evolution, but the available figures do not establish a verified 2026 shipment forecast.

Enterprise deployment is an opportunity, not a guaranteed payoff

GSMA Foundry identifies 5G-Advanced monetization, NTN, AI and private networks as focus areas for 2025–2026, with attention on moving use cases toward real-world deployment. That signals industry activity rather than guaranteed returns for businesses. Whether a private network or specialized connectivity is worthwhile depends on the site’s coverage needs, devices, applications and operating requirements.

Will satellite connectivity become part of 5G?

Non-terrestrial networks (NTN) are part of the 5G-Advanced direction, including work on satellite-terrestrial convergence and direct-to-device connectivity. GSMA Foundry also identifies NTN as an area of ongoing ecosystem work. Implementations and capabilities vary, so this trend should not be read as meaning that every mobile subscriber has satellite 5G. Availability depends on the service, market, device and operator arrangement.

How does 5G fixed wireless access affect home internet?

Fixed wireless access (FWA) uses a mobile network to provide a fixed connection to a home or business, typically through a dedicated gateway or router. Ericsson’s June 2026 Mobility Report says 71% of FWA service providers offer service over 5G, making it one of the clearest consumer-facing uses of the technology.

If considering a 5G home internet gateway, first confirm that the provider serves the address and supports the device. Check operator approval and supported bands; a compatible router cannot compensate for missing local service or inadequate signal. The provider’s coverage and equipment rules determine whether a particular setup will work.

What should consumers and businesses expect locally?

Use global trend figures as context, not as a guarantee about a local network. For a phone user, the practical questions are whether the operator offers SA or a specific differentiated service, whether the handset and plan support it, and whether coverage is available where it is needed. For home broadband, check address-level FWA availability and gateway compatibility. For IoT, enterprise or satellite use, verify the specific service and device requirements with the provider.

In short, 2026 is a year of uneven transition: SA and slicing are moving into more commercial use, FWA already connects 5G to home broadband, while several 5G-Advanced and NTN capabilities remain dependent on continuing standards work and market-specific deployments.
