Then review photos and videos, apps and app data, and downloads or offline media. These are useful places to look—not a universal ranking; what fills a phone depends on how it is used.
Start with the Storage screen
On most Android phones, go to Settings > Storage. Labels and menu locations vary by Android version and manufacturer, so search Settings for “Storage” if you do not see that path. The screen shows the categories your phone uses to account for local storage. Storage holds items such as photos and music; it is different from memory used to run apps. Google’s Android storage guide explains the distinction and offers cleanup guidance.

Use the categories shown on your own phone to decide where to start. The three checks below are practical options, not a claim that these categories take the most space on every device.

1. Photos and videos
Media can take up local space, but do not remove phone copies until you have verified that the photos and videos you want to keep are backed up. In Google Photos, check the backup status for the relevant items before using its cleanup option.

Remove local copies only after backup is complete
- Open Google Photos and confirm that backup has finished for the items you want to keep.
- Use Free up space on this device in Google Photos to remove eligible local copies.
- After removal, access backed-up items in Google Photos or at photos.google.com while signed in and online.
Removing device copies can mean those items no longer appear in the phone’s built-in gallery or are available offline. Google notes that photos and videos fewer than 30 days old may remain on the device. See Google Photos’ instructions for freeing up space for the current steps and details.
Review suggested items before deleting
Google Photos’ storage-management tools may surface candidates such as blurry photos, screenshots, or large videos. Review each item before deleting it; a suggested cleanup candidate is not automatically disposable.

2. Apps and app data
Look through installed apps for ones you no longer use. If your device offers automatic app archiving, it can remove apps you use infrequently while retaining personal app data and leaving the app icon on the device. You can download an archived app again if it is still available on Google Play. The feature and its menus may not be available on every device.
Clear cache is not the same as clearing storage
- Clear cache: removes temporary data. The app may take longer to load the next time while it recreates that data.
- Clear storage: permanently deletes the app’s data. This can remove settings, saved information, and downloads held by the app.
Before clearing an app’s storage, check the app’s own settings for downloads or other data you can remove selectively. Avoid clearing storage as a general-purpose cleanup step unless you understand what that app will lose. Google describes these options in its Android storage guidance.

3. Downloads and offline media
Movies, music, and other files saved for offline use may be removable from the app that downloaded them. For example, Google’s guidance explains how to remove downloaded content in Google TV and YouTube Music. For other services, manage downloads in the app that created them.
For regular downloaded files, use your phone’s file manager to review and delete items you no longer need. If you want to keep files but remove them from the phone, connect it to a computer with a USB cable, copy the files or folders, verify the copies, and then delete the phone copies only if you no longer need them there. The space recovered depends on the files actually present; there is no reliable fixed amount to expect.

What if the phone still feels full?
Google’s Android Help says a phone can start having issues when less than 10% of its storage is free. Treat that as a warning sign in Google’s guidance, not a guarantee that every phone will slow down at the same threshold. Check Settings > Storage again after cleanup to see whether you have freed enough space for your needs. Google’s guidance on speeding up a slow Android device includes the 10% note.
Moving files or adding cloud storage solves a different problem
If your phone has a microSD card slot, it may be possible to save or move photos to a card. The option depends on the phone; Google’s Gallery instructions show an SD-card choice only for devices with a card slot. Check your phone model and its instructions before buying a card or moving files. Google’s instructions for moving photos to an SD card describe the relevant device option.

More Google Account storage can help when your cloud storage for backups and online content is full, but it does not increase the phone’s internal storage. For local space, remove or move files on the device; for a full Google Account, review cloud storage separately. Google One describes Google Account storage options.
