On Pixel, Google delivers QPRs as part of Feature Drops, so those terms describe related—not competing—things. Other manufacturers may use different update names and schedules.
What each term means
Quarterly Platform Release (QPR)
A QPR is a quarterly Android platform update that builds on an initial platform version with fixes and improvements. Google says QPRs are delivered to both the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) and Pixel devices as part of Feature Drops. The release notes for Android 17 QPR 3 describe that relationship.

Feature Drop
In the cited Google documentation, Feature Drop is the Pixel-facing context in which QPRs are delivered. It is not a separate Android platform version that competes with a QPR. The documentation does not define “Feature Drop” as a universal label across Android manufacturers, so treat the term as specific to Google’s Pixel update program unless another maker defines it for its devices.
Major Android upgrade
A major upgrade moves a device to a new Android platform version, with a new API-level identity and potentially broader framework or app-behavior changes. API level is the integer that identifies a revision of the Android framework API. Google’s current reference maps Android 16 to API level 36 and Android 17 to API level 37: see Android API levels.

How the terms compare
| Question | QPR | Feature Drop | Major Android upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| What does it describe? | A quarterly platform update stream with fixes and improvements. | The Pixel-facing grouping or delivery context in which Google says QPRs appear. | A new Android platform version and its API-level context. |
| How often? | Quarterly, by the release description. | Feature and rollout details vary by Pixel release and eligible device. | Part of the Android platform release cycle; the platform release date does not establish when a particular phone maker will deliver it. |
| Does the label establish an API level? | No new API level is implied by the QPR label alone. Android 16 QPR notes say those updates do not include app-impacting API changes. | No. The label alone does not define an API level. | Yes. Each platform version has an API-level identity and may include framework or app-behavior changes. |
| Who gets it? | Google describes QPRs as going to AOSP and Pixel devices; device availability outside that context depends on the manufacturer. | Pixel devices, with eligibility and feature scope varying. | Availability and timing depend on the device and update channel. |
| What should developers do? | Test relevant behavior and user-facing changes; do not assume the label means no testing is needed. | Check which Pixel devices and features are in scope. | Assess compatibility changes and test apps against the new version. |
Do QPRs change apps?
Do not assume a QPR is feature-free or has no effect on apps. Google’s Android 16 QPR release notes say those updates do not include app-impacting API changes, while still advising developers to test for possible user-experience effects. That statement applies to the Android 16 QPRs covered by those notes; it should not be generalized to every QPR.
For major releases, compatibility work can involve changes that affect all apps as well as behavior changes targeted at apps that adopt a newer target SDK. Google recommends proactive testing in its Android app compatibility guidance. During beta, Platform Stability marks the point when APIs and app-facing behavior are final; Google’s Android Beta for developers explains the phases.

What the Pixel release schedule does—and does not—promise
Google’s Android 17 QPR 3 availability page describes four stable public releases in a Pixel cycle: the platform release followed by three QPRs. That is a description of Google’s Pixel program, not a promise that every Android manufacturer will issue updates on the same cadence or call them QPRs or Feature Drops.

For a non-Pixel phone, check the manufacturer’s update notices for the model, region, and update channel. Google’s terminology alone does not establish that another manufacturer’s update is equivalent in timing, packaging, or eligibility.

What Android app developers should track
- For a QPR: review the release notes for the affected platform and test system behavior or user experience relevant to your app.
- For a major version: review compatibility changes and test on the new platform, especially before targeting its newer SDK.
- For SDK versions: a minor SDK version is not targetable through
targetSdkVersion. Android’s app versioning documentation describes runtime checks for newer APIs.
How to tell which kind of update you have
- Check the Android version and build information in your phone’s settings or update notice. A change to a new platform version is a major upgrade; the manufacturer’s exact menu labels vary.
- Check the release notes. Google’s Android release notes identify QPR updates, while Pixel notices may present them within a Feature Drop.
- Confirm device eligibility and rollout timing with the manufacturer. A Google Pixel schedule does not establish when another brand’s model or region receives an update.
