Your safety can depend on which Android phone you choose: update-support periods, update delivery and safety-feature availability vary by model, market and carrier. Compare those details for the exact phone—not just the brand—then check its current security-update level.
What to compare before choosing an Android phone
There is no reliable blanket ranking of the “safest Android phone” based on the information available here. A more useful comparison focuses on five model-specific questions:

- How long will security updates be provided? Look for a stated duration or a specific support end date.
- When does the support period begin? It may start when a model first goes on sale, not when you buy it.
- Which version is covered? Confirm the exact model, market and carrier variant.
- How are updates delivered? Check any stated frequency and model-specific update history; eligibility does not mean every phone gets an update at the same time.
- Are the protections you need available? Confirm feature and regional availability for the exact device.
These details matter for used phones as well as new ones: a phone can have years of support in its original policy but much less time remaining by the time you buy it.
How the published support commitments differ
Google and Samsung both describe long security-support periods, but their statements are not identical offers.

“Seven years” should not be read as a universal Android promise. Google specifies the eligible Pixel family and start point; Samsung says “up to” seven years and notes product and market variation. Check the current terms for the model you are considering.
Why an eligible phone may not get an update immediately
Support duration and update delivery are separate questions. Samsung says carriers develop and release updates, distribution may happen in waves, and unlocked phones can receive updates later than carrier-branded devices. Its update-availability guidance is a reminder to check the phone’s carrier variant as well as its model name.

For any phone, avoid assuming that a published support commitment means updates arrive simultaneously on every eligible device. Ask the manufacturer which market and carrier variants are included, and look for a stated update frequency or model-specific delivery information where available.
Check the security-update level on the phone
Before buying a used phone—or when checking one you already own—record its exact model and current software status. Google says the Android version and security-update level are visible in Settings. Samsung directs users to its Software update settings, while noting that menu names and paths can vary by model, software version and provider.

- On a Pixel: Open Settings and check the Android version and security-update level, following Google’s Pixel update instructions.
- On a Galaxy: Open Settings > Software update to check for updates. Samsung’s Galaxy update instructions note that the exact menus can differ by device and software version.
- Before comparing: Write down the model and carrier variant, then match them to the manufacturer’s support terms. For a second-hand phone, check the model’s support start date so you can estimate how much of its stated period remains.
Safety features are not identical across Android phones
Update support is only one part of phone safety. Do not assume that every Android device has the same anti-theft or emergency features, or that a feature works identically in every region. Google describes safety features for Pixel devices, but its statements are vendor descriptions, not independent guarantees of outcomes. For example, Google says, “Every Pixel comes with factory reset protection for enhanced anti-theft security.”
Google also cautions that a feature can depend on network connectivity and other factors and “may not be reliable for emergency communications or available in all areas.” Its 2026 Android security and privacy overview says some features initially launch on Pixel, another reason not to infer that a feature is present on every Android phone. Check the exact device and your region for the protection you intend to rely on.

Questions to ask before you buy
- What is the manufacturer’s stated security-support duration or exact end date for this model?
- When does that support clock start, and how much time remains?
- Does the policy cover this exact model, market and carrier version?
- Is an update frequency stated, and what is known about delivery for this model and carrier?
- Are the anti-theft, privacy or emergency features I care about available on this phone in my region?
The cited policies do not provide a complete comparison across every Android manufacturer and model. If a manufacturer does not clearly answer these questions for the exact device, treat the support period or feature availability as unconfirmed rather than assuming it matches a better-documented phone.
