Use Google Play Protect, update Android, remove apps you don’t trust, and review your Google Account security before considering a factory reset. Pop-ups, redirects, or a slow phone can be signs of malware, but they don’t prove an infection on their own. Google describes malware as “unsafe or unwanted software that can steal your info or harm your device.”
Do these symptoms mean your Android phone has a virus?
On Android, “malware” or “potentially harmful app” is usually more accurate than “virus.” Google lists possible warning signs including persistent pop-ups, unexpected browser changes or redirects, poor performance, and messages sent without your action. These clues can have other causes, so treat them as a reason to check the phone rather than a diagnosis.

Browser symptoms may include unwanted extensions or toolbars, changed Chrome settings, or ads that keep appearing. A warning on a web page urging you to install an app is not, by itself, confirmation that your phone is infected. Don’t install software from a pop-up; use the steps below instead. Play Protect checks apps when you install them and regularly scans installed apps. When it identifies an app as harmful, it may warn you, disable the app, or, in some cases, remove it automatically.

- Open the Google Play Store.
- Tap your profile icon, then choose Play Protect.
- Open Play Protect settings and make sure app scanning is turned on.
- If you installed apps from outside Google Play, enable improved harmful-app detection if that option is available.
Labels and menus can change with the Play Store version. If the path differs, look for Play Protect in the Play Store profile menu or consult Google’s Android security FAQs.
2. Install Android and security updates
Check for both Android software updates and security or Google Play system updates. The menu names and locations vary by manufacturer and Android version; look in the phone’s Settings app for System update, Software update, or Security update. Install available updates and follow any restart prompts. Google includes system and security updates in its recommended malware-removal steps.

3. Uninstall apps you don’t trust
Remove apps you don’t recognize, no longer need, or don’t trust—particularly apps installed shortly before the symptoms began. Google recommends removing untrusted apps and apps that did not come from Google Play.
- Open Settings and find the installed-apps list. Depending on the phone, it may be under Apps or Apps & notifications.
- Review recent installs and select an app you want to remove.
- Tap Uninstall and confirm. Repeat for other suspicious or unnecessary apps.
If the phone is difficult to use, use safe mode as a diagnostic step before removing apps.

4. Use safe mode to check whether a downloaded app is involved
Safe mode temporarily turns off downloaded apps. If the problem goes away while the phone is in safe mode, a downloaded app is likely involved. Safe mode does not identify which app is responsible: restart normally, then remove recently downloaded apps one at a time and check whether the symptoms return.
The way to enter and leave safe mode differs by manufacturer and model. Follow the instructions for your specific phone rather than relying on a universal button sequence. Google explains the diagnostic process in its guide to finding problem apps by rebooting to safe mode.

5. Review your Google Account security
Open Google Account Security Checkup and review alerts and account activity. If messages were sent without your action, or Google signed you out to protect the device, take those signs seriously and resolve the account alerts. Removing an app from the phone does not, by itself, secure an account that may have been compromised. Google’s malware guidance includes checking account security.
6. Reset the phone only if the problem continues
If signs persist after scanning, updating, removing untrusted apps, and checking account security, Google says a factory reset may be needed; you can also ask the device manufacturer for help. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone, so treat it as a last resort—not a routine scan or first response.
Before you reset
- Back up the data you want to keep.
- Confirm you know the Google Account password and the phone’s screen-lock credentials.
- Charge the phone and make sure you have network access.
- Find the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact device and Android version.
Reset options and steps vary. Follow Google’s factory-reset guidance and your manufacturer’s device-specific instructions.
After the cleanup
Reinstall only apps you trust and need. Reinstalling an app that caused the problem can bring the symptoms back, so avoid restoring every app automatically if you’re unsure which one was involved. Keep Play Protect enabled and install future updates as they become available; no cleanup procedure guarantees protection against every threat. Google also recommends manufacturer support if problems continue after these steps.
