Android lock screen widgets vs iPhone Lock Screen widgets: what each can do

iPhone has a documented WidgetKit Lock Screen widget location. Android support varies by device; here is what Pixel Tablet supports and how to verify an Android phone.

Short answer: iPhone has a documented Lock Screen widget location through Apple’s WidgetKit, but each app must provide a compatible widget. Android support is device-specific: Google documents lock-screen widgets on Pixel Tablet, while Android’s compatibility rules make the capability optional and a March 2025 Android Developers roadmap described broader availability as planned rather than universal. Check the exact Android model and software version before assuming a phone supports it.

Android and iPhone lock-screen widgets at a glance

The two platforms use similar language for a glanceable panel, but they do not offer the same level of certainty. Apple documents Lock Screen widgets as a WidgetKit location on iPhone. For Android, the clearest official instructions apply to Google Pixel Tablet. Android phone support can vary by manufacturer, model and release.

Capability iPhone Lock Screen widgets Android lock-screen widgets
Platform status Apple documents the iPhone Lock Screen as a WidgetKit location. Implementation-dependent. Pixel Tablet has documented support; Android 15 makes the capability optional for device implementations.
What appears A small amount of timely, personally relevant information supplied by a compatible app. On Pixel Tablet, Google gives Clock, Timer and Weather as examples. Other devices may offer different widgets.
Actions A widget can offer quick actions without opening the app, depending on the app and widget. On Pixel Tablet, tapping a widget lets you use it. The available action depends on that widget.
How you reach it Apple documents the Lock Screen location, but the cited developer material is not a complete user setup guide. Pixel Tablet: swipe from the right edge to open a separate widget screen.
Layout changes Exact layout controls depend on Apple’s Lock Screen and the widget configuration offered by each app. Pixel Tablet users can add, remove and reorder widgets. Resizing is available only for select apps.
Related features Controls and Live Activities are separate from widgets, even though they can also appear on the Lock Screen. Feature names and behavior can differ by device implementation.

What iPhone Lock Screen widgets can do

WidgetKit puts glanceable information on the Lock Screen

Apple’s WidgetKit documentation describes Lock Screen widgets as a way to surface a small amount of timely, personally relevant information. The intent is glanceable access: you can see a useful status without opening the full app. The Lock Screen is one of the locations where a WidgetKit widget can be presented, alongside the app experiences Apple documents elsewhere.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That description is deliberately narrower than “every app can run on the Lock Screen.” A developer has to provide a Lock Screen widget, and the widget determines what data it shows. A calendar app might expose an upcoming event, while another app could show a different status or no Lock Screen widget at all. Apple’s platform documentation establishes the capability, not an app-by-app inventory.

Quick actions are possible, but they are app-defined

A Lock Screen widget can provide quick actions without launching the app. “Quick action” does not mean that every widget is an interactive control or that every app exposes the same buttons. The app’s widget design determines whether you can tap through to information, trigger a supported action or simply view a value.

For a fair comparison with Android, treat the widget as a compact surface with limited, purpose-specific information. It is not a replacement for the complete app interface. The useful question is whether the particular app you use publishes the information or action you need in its Lock Screen widget.

Do not count controls and Live Activities as widgets

Apple separately documents accessory widgets, Lock Screen controls and Live Activities. A control is a button or toggle for an action. A Live Activity presents ongoing, up-to-date content, such as a process that is currently in progress. Both may be visible on the Lock Screen, but their function and implementation are different from a WidgetKit Lock Screen widget.

This distinction matters when you compare feature lists. Seeing a button or an updating status on an iPhone Lock Screen does not prove that the app has a conventional widget. Ask which Apple feature is being used: a widget for a compact information view, a control for an action, or a Live Activity for ongoing content.

What the iPhone documentation does and does not establish

  • It establishes that developers can place WidgetKit widgets on the iPhone Lock Screen.
  • It establishes the purpose: timely, personally relevant information and, where supported, quick actions.
  • It does not establish that every app supplies a Lock Screen widget.
  • It does not, by itself, provide a complete list of supported apps or promise identical layout options across widgets.

If a widget you expect is missing, first check whether that app actually offers an iPhone Lock Screen widget. If what you want is a toggle or an actively updating status, look for the app’s control or Live Activity instead of assuming it belongs in the widget picker.

What Android lock-screen widgets can do on Pixel Tablet

Google’s documented Android example is Pixel Tablet

Google’s Pixel Tablet Help documentation gives a concrete implementation of lock-screen widgets. It names Clock, Timer and Weather as examples of widgets that can provide content while the tablet is locked. The documentation is for Pixel Tablet; it should not be treated as a universal Android phone instruction.

Turn on the Pixel Tablet widget experience

Use the following path on a Pixel Tablet:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to Hub mode.
  3. Open Lock Screen.
  4. Enable the lock-screen widget feature.

Once enabled, open the widget screen by swiping from the right edge of the locked tablet. Google documents this as a separate screen rather than a gesture that should be assumed for every Android device.

Open and use a widget

On the Pixel Tablet widget screen, tap a widget to use it. The exact result is widget-dependent. A timer widget may expose timer-related interaction, while a weather widget may primarily present current information. The documentation does not claim that every widget supports the same controls or that tapping always opens the full application.

Add, remove and reorder widgets

Google documents three organization actions from the widget screen:

  • Add: choose another available widget for the lock-screen panel.
  • Remove: take a widget out of the panel.
  • Reorder: change the sequence in which widgets appear.

Resizing is more limited. Google says resizing is supported only for select apps, so a widget that cannot be resized is behaving within the documented limitation rather than necessarily malfunctioning.

Disable the feature or clear the panel

You can turn the lock-screen widget feature off in the same Lock Screen settings area. Google also notes that removing every widget leaves the lock screen without widgets. Those are separate choices: disabling the feature turns off the experience, while removing all widgets leaves it enabled but empty.

Why Android support is not the same on every device

Android 15 makes lock-screen widgets optional

Android’s version-specific Compatibility Definition Document for Android 15 says device implementations “MAY support application widgets on the lock screen.” “May” is the decisive term: the capability is permitted, not required. A phone that runs Android 15 can therefore comply with that specification without exposing lock-screen widgets to users.

The result is that “Does Android support lock-screen widgets?” has no single answer for every phone. The model, manufacturer software and installed release all matter. A feature shown on one Android tablet cannot be assumed to exist on another tablet or on a phone.

The March 6, 2025 Android Developers roadmap

An Android Developers FAQ posted on March 6, 2025 by Product Manager Tyler Beneke and Software Engineer Lucas Silva stated: “Lock screen widgets will be available in AOSP for tablets and mobile starting with the release after Android 16 (QPR1).” The same FAQ said widgets were already available on Pixel Tablets, that original-equipment manufacturers could customize the trigger for the experience and that manufacturers might set default widgets.

  • CHARGE LESS TO EXPERIENCE MORE – Leave battery-anxiety back at the dorm with 11 hours of unplugged video streaming. For long days out, the 45W quick charge gets you back in the action fast.

This is a dated roadmap statement, not proof that every Android phone has the feature today. Rollout plans can change, and manufacturers can ship, hide or modify capabilities independently. Use the device’s current documentation and settings to verify support rather than treating the 2025 statement as a universal guarantee.

What manufacturer customization can change

If an Android manufacturer implements the capability, it can choose how users reach the widget experience and which widgets appear by default, according to the FAQ. That means two devices running related Android releases could differ in all of the details that matter in practice:

  • the edge, button or gesture that opens the widget view;
  • whether the feature is enabled by default;
  • which system or third-party widgets are offered;
  • the available layout, ordering and resizing controls; and
  • whether the feature appears under a Lock Screen, display, hub or another settings category.

Those are implementation choices, not Android-wide rules established by the Android 15 specification.

How to check an Android phone before you rely on the feature

Because support is optional, use a model-specific check instead of a generic Android tutorial.

  1. Identify the exact model. “Android phone” is too broad for a reliable answer. Record the manufacturer, model name and regional variant if applicable.
  2. Record the installed Android version and manufacturer interface version. A feature can depend on both the base Android release and the manufacturer’s software layer.
  3. Search the phone’s own Settings. Look under Lock Screen, Display, Home screen, Hub or similar categories for a widget setting. The label and location are not standardized.
  4. Check the manufacturer’s current support page for that model and version. Do not infer support from a different phone, a tablet or an older software build.
  5. Test the documented entry gesture or control. If the manufacturer specifies a swipe, edge, button or panel, use that exact trigger. The Pixel Tablet’s right-edge swipe is not an Android-wide instruction.
  6. Check app availability separately. Even on a device with the feature, the widget list depends on what the installed apps provide.

If none of the device documentation or settings mentions lock-screen widgets, the safest conclusion is that support is not established for that phone. A third-party app that draws information over a lock screen would be a different mechanism, not evidence that the operating system implements application lock-screen widgets.

Capability-by-capability comparison

Information density and timeliness

Both platforms target glanceable information rather than a full app screen. Apple describes WidgetKit content as timely and personally relevant. Google’s Pixel Tablet examples—Clock, Timer and Weather—show the same practical pattern: a small panel that answers a narrow question while the device remains locked.

Neither platform’s documentation promises that every widget refreshes at the same rate or contains the same amount of detail. The app and widget design determine the data shown.

Interaction

On iPhone, WidgetKit can provide quick actions without launching the app, but the action is defined by the app. On Pixel Tablet, Google says tapping a widget lets you use it, with the available behavior determined by the widget. Do not compare the platforms by counting every tap as the same type of control; a view, a shortcut and a toggle are different interactions.

Customization

Pixel Tablet documentation explicitly lists adding, removing and reordering widgets, with resizing limited to select apps. Apple’s cited developer documentation establishes the Lock Screen location and widget purpose, but it is not a complete user guide that guarantees matching layout controls. Therefore, it is accurate to say that both platforms can surface widgets, but not that their arrangement and resizing systems are identical.

Availability certainty

This is the largest practical difference. An iPhone user can start from Apple’s documented WidgetKit Lock Screen capability and then check whether a chosen app supplies a widget. An Android phone user must establish two things: whether that particular device implementation exposes lock-screen widgets and whether the app supplies one. Pixel Tablet users have a documented path, but that path should not be generalized to all Android hardware.

Which platform fits a particular need?

You want the clearest platform-level expectation

Choose the iPhone path when your priority is a documented Lock Screen widget location and you are willing to select apps that actually publish compatible widgets. The platform capability is clearly described, while the app catalog remains app-dependent.

You own a Pixel Tablet

Use Google’s Hub mode and Lock Screen settings, then open the widget screen with the right-edge swipe. The tablet supports adding, removing and reordering widgets, and some—but not all—app widgets can be resized.

You are choosing or updating an Android phone

Do not decide from the Android brand name or operating-system number alone. Confirm the exact model and current software documentation. Android 15’s optional language and the 2025 roadmap both indicate why a phone-by-phone check is necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need an ongoing status or a one-tap switch on iPhone

First determine whether the app’s feature is a WidgetKit widget, a Lock Screen control or a Live Activity. Apple treats those as separate experiences. Selecting the wrong category can make a supported feature appear to be missing.

Troubleshooting by symptom

“The iPhone app is installed, but I cannot find its Lock Screen widget.”

  • Verify that the app offers a Lock Screen widget; Apple does not require every app to provide one.
  • Check whether you are looking for a control or Live Activity instead of a widget.
  • Use the app’s own documentation for the choices it exposes; WidgetKit defines the platform location, not a universal set of app options.

“My Pixel Tablet shows no widgets.”

  • Open Settings > Hub mode > Lock Screen and confirm the feature is enabled.
  • Swipe from the right edge of the locked tablet to reach the widget screen.
  • Check whether widgets were removed; Google says removing every widget leaves the lock screen without widgets.
  • Remember that resizing is available only for select apps, so a fixed-size widget is not necessarily broken.

“My Android phone has no lock-screen widget option.”

  • Confirm the exact model and software version.
  • Look for a manufacturer-specific setting or trigger rather than relying on the Pixel Tablet gesture.
  • Read the current model-specific support documentation. The Android 15 specification permits, but does not require, the capability.
  • Do not treat a future-oriented Android Developers roadmap statement as proof of present support on your phone.

Bottom line

iPhone offers the more clearly documented platform capability: WidgetKit can place app-provided widgets on the Lock Screen for timely information and, where the app supports it, quick actions. Android can deliver a comparable experience, but availability is implementation-specific. Google documents it on Pixel Tablet, while Android 15 leaves the capability optional and a March 2025 Android Developers FAQ described wider AOSP availability as a planned milestone. For Android phones, verify the model and current software before promising yourself lock-screen widgets.
