If your Android location is missing, drifting, or slow to update, first check system Location and the affected app’s permission. Then test Location Accuracy and connectivity, and try again outdoors with a clear view of the sky. A poor fix does not automatically mean the phone’s GPS hardware has failed: Android may combine satellite signals with Wi-Fi, cellular signals, and sensors, and buildings or indoor locations can weaken reception.
What “GPS not working” can mean
The symptom may be a missing location, a stale or jumping blue dot, a wide uncertainty circle, or a direction beam that points the wrong way. These are not all the same problem. A permission can block an app from accessing location; weak reception can make the estimate uncertain; and a compass issue can affect the direction indicator without making the location coordinates wrong.

On Android devices with Google Play services, Location Accuracy can combine GPS, nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular signals, and device sensors when available. That combined estimate can help where satellite signals are obstructed, but its available inputs and precision vary by device and surroundings. Some Wi-Fi-only tablets do not have GPS hardware. A slow or inaccurate reading alone therefore does not diagnose a failed receiver or antenna. Google explains how Maps location accuracy works.
Work through the checks in order

Make sure device Location is on
Open your phone’s Settings and check that the system-wide Location setting is enabled. If it is off, apps cannot get the device’s location through normal location access. Menu labels and paths vary by Android version and phone maker; search Settings for “Location” if you do not see it.

Check permission for the affected app
In Settings, open the affected app’s permissions and confirm it is allowed to use location. On Android 12 and later, approximate and precise access are separate choices. A phone can have device Location turned on while an app has only approximate access. If navigation needs a more precise position, check whether the app has precise location permission. Google’s Android location-permission guidance covers these controls.

Check Location Accuracy
Location Accuracy is not simply another name for the GPS switch. It can use wireless signals and sensors as well as GPS to improve the device’s estimate.

- Android 12 and later: Google’s documented path is Settings → Location → Location Services → Location Accuracy → Improve Location Accuracy.
- Android 11 and earlier: Google’s documented path is Settings → Location → Advanced → Location Accuracy.
Phone makers may change these menus. If the path does not match your phone, search Settings for “Location Accuracy.” Google documents Location Accuracy and its settings.

Check Airplane mode and network settings
Turn off Airplane mode. If Google Maps reports that connectivity is relevant, enable Wi-Fi or mobile data and test again. Wi-Fi and cellular signals can contribute to a location estimate even when you are not connected to those networks for internet access, depending on device settings and service availability. Google Maps lists these checks for location accuracy.

Test somewhere with a clearer view of the sky
Go outdoors and move away from tall buildings or other obstructions. Indoor spaces, underground areas, and multi-storey car parks can block or weaken satellite signals. In Maps, a broad circle around the blue dot means the app is less certain about the location; it is an uncertainty indicator, not proof that the GPS receiver is broken. Google describes the blue dot and ways to improve its accuracy.

Try turning off Battery Saver
If the location jumps around, temporarily turn off Battery Saver and check whether the symptom changes. Google includes this as a troubleshooting step; it is a diagnostic check, not proof that Battery Saver is always the cause.

Calibrate the compass if the direction is wrong
If the blue-dot beam is wide or points the wrong way, move the phone in a figure eight a few times until the beam narrows and faces the right direction. If Maps offers an on-screen calibration flow, follow that prompt. Compass calibration addresses orientation; it does not repair weak GPS reception or establish that the reported coordinates are wrong. Google’s Maps instructions explain compass calibration.

Restart the phone
After the checks above, restart the phone and test location again. Google Maps Help recommends restarting if the location is still wrong. Google’s Android Maps troubleshooting guidance.

Choose the next step based on the symptom

How precise should the location be?
Google Maps Help describes satellite-based location as being around 20 metres and mobile-tower location as roughly a few thousand metres. These are approximate scales stated by Google, not guaranteed accuracy for every phone, setting, or environment. The practical difference is that a satellite fix can be substantially more precise than a tower-based estimate, while the signals available to a particular phone and its surroundings affect the result. When to seek device-specific help
If the problem continues in multiple location apps outdoors after permissions, device settings, connectivity, and restart checks, contact the handset maker or a qualified repair provider. Android’s general guidance does not define a universal test that proves a particular phone’s antenna or receiver has failed. A Wi-Fi-only tablet may also lack GPS hardware, so check the device specifications before treating the absence of a satellite fix as a fault.
