Android Clipboard Sync: Why It Fails—and What Works with Windows

Phone Link can sync clipboard items between Windows and selected Android devices—not every Android phone. Check eligibility, enable the setting, and troubleshoot common connection issues.

Android does not provide one universal clipboard that automatically syncs with every other device. For Android-to-Windows copy and paste, Microsoft Phone Link works only with selected Android devices, and its general setup requirements do not guarantee clipboard compatibility. Check your phone model first; if supported, enable Cross-device copy and paste in Phone Link.

First, identify which devices you want to connect

The best-documented route is Android to a Windows PC. Microsoft’s Phone Link clipboard feature is limited to Surface Duo and selected Android devices, rather than being available on every phone running Android. Microsoft lists Samsung phones with One UI 2.1 or later and selected HONOR, OPPO, OnePlus, realme, ASUS, vivo, and Xiaomi devices. Its examples include Galaxy Note20 and S21 families, HONOR Magic4 Pro and Magic6 series, ROG Phone 8 models, vivo X Fold3 Pro, and Xiaomi 14T series. These are examples on Microsoft’s current support page, not a complete or permanent compatibility list: Microsoft’s supported-device and copy-and-paste details.

For general Phone Link setup, Microsoft lists Windows 10 with the October 2022 update or later, or Windows 11; Android 10 or later; the same Microsoft account on both devices; and a shared Wi-Fi network. These are baseline Phone Link requirements, not proof that a particular phone supports clipboard transfer. Microsoft also says Phone Link does not currently support multiple Android profiles or work or school accounts. See Microsoft’s Phone Link requirements.

Turn on cross-device copy and paste

  1. Make sure Phone Link is connected to your Android phone and that Link to Windows is available and connected on the phone.

    #1 Best Overall
  2. On the PC, open Phone Link and go to Settings. Turn on Cross-device copy and paste, or the similarly named option that allows Phone Link to access and transfer copied content. Labels can vary by app version; Microsoft documents the setting on its copy-and-paste support page.

  3. Try copying a short plain-text phrase on one device and pasting it on the other. Then try the reverse direction. This simple test helps distinguish a connection or setting issue from a problem with a particular app or type of content.

Know what Phone Link clipboard sync does

Phone Link shares the current clipboard item; it does not combine or preserve a shared history. Microsoft explains: “Every time you copy something on either device, what you copy will replace the clipboard content on both of your devices.” The feature supports text and images. Images larger than 1 MB are resized, and formatting may be lost when apps handle copied text differently. Microsoft also notes that content copied from Secure Folder cannot be copied to the PC, even though that copy replaces the PC’s clipboard contents. Details are on Microsoft’s support page.

If clipboard sync does not work

Check eligibility and the setting before changing unrelated phone settings. Microsoft’s suggested troubleshooting steps are:

  1. Confirm your Android model is among the devices Microsoft supports and that Cross-device copy and paste is on in Phone Link.

  2. If a large selection fails, try copying a smaller amount of text.

  3. Close and reopen both Phone Link on the PC and Link to Windows on the phone.

  4. Check that the Phone Link connection is working. Clipboard exchange needs a data connection between the devices.

  5. Review Link to Windows mobile-data settings. If mobile-data sync is allowed and Wi-Fi is unavailable, clipboard transfer can use mobile data. If that option is off, both devices need to be on Wi-Fi.

  6. Restart the PC if the earlier steps do not help. Microsoft lists this as a later troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix.

What if you mean Android-to-Android or a different device?

Do not assume Phone Link’s Windows instructions apply to another Android phone, tablet, or computer. The cited documentation does not establish a universal shared clipboard for arbitrary Android devices.

Gboard keeps a local clipboard history

Google’s Gboard help explains how to open Clipboard and pin text so it stays available; otherwise, clipboard history clears shortly after last use. That is useful for retaining items on the phone, but Google’s documentation does not describe Gboard clipboard history as cross-device sync. See Google’s Gboard clipboard instructions.

Quick Share sends files, not a live clipboard

Android’s Quick Share can transfer photos, documents, folders, and other files between Android devices and Windows PCs. It can be a practical alternative when you can save or share the content as a file, but it does not keep a shared clipboard updated. See Android’s Quick Share overview.

Do not confuse a preview announcement with general availability

In a July 24, 2025 Windows Insider post, Microsoft described a refreshed Link to Windows app that could show recent PC clipboard items in Recent activity. The announcement specified an Insider Preview build, Phone Link 1.25062.83.0 or higher, and Link to Windows Beta 1.25071.155 or higher. Those version numbers were prerequisites for that preview announcement; the post does not establish that the feature is generally available to all users now. Read the dated Windows Insider announcement for its original scope.
