Your Android camera may stop recording because the phone is overheating, the selected model or recording mode has a time limit, or storage is running low. Start by noting how long the video records, which camera mode and resolution are selected, how much space is available, and whether the phone feels unusually hot.
Why an Android camera stops recording
There is no single recording-duration limit that applies to every Android phone. The cause depends on the device, camera app, recording mode, available storage, and phone temperature.

Heat protection
On Pixel phones, Google says excess heat can cause the phone to limit functions, including turning off the camera. High-definition recording can warm the device; direct sunlight, an enclosed space, or demanding tasks while charging can add heat. Google advises stopping demanding activity, moving a hot phone somewhere cooler, and waiting for it to cool. These are Pixel-specific support statements, not a guarantee of how every Android model behaves. Google Pixel Help: Help keep your Pixel phone from feeling too warm or hot.

Some Galaxy phones limit UHD or 8K recordings to 10 minutes to help prevent overheating. Samsung recommends switching to FHD or HD to extend recording time. This is a limit for certain Galaxy high-resolution modes, not a universal Android rule. Front- and rear-camera resolution settings may also be separate. Low storage or a feature-specific cap
Pixel Video Boost has a maximum recording time of 10 minutes. Google also says a low-storage warning can stop a Video Boost recording. The feature saves a temporary local file for processing; its size varies with the scene, resolution, and frame rate, and it can use available device storage while processing. This is specific to Video Boost and should not be mistaken for an ordinary Pixel camera limit. Google Pixel Camera Help: Video Boost.
How to narrow down the cause
- Note when recording stops. Record the duration and see whether the stop happens at about the same point each time. A repeatable 10-minute stop is a reason to check the selected mode and phone model; it does not by itself identify the cause.
- Check the mode and resolution. On a Galaxy using UHD or 8K, try FHD or HD and see whether the recording lasts longer. If you are using Pixel Video Boost, account for its feature-specific 10-minute maximum. Camera menus and options vary by model.
- Check available device storage. Look for a low-storage warning, especially when using Video Boost. Freeing space is a reasonable troubleshooting step, but the cited official guidance specifically connects low storage to Video Boost recording.
- Check for heat. If the phone is very hot or shows a temperature warning, stop recording, unplug it if it is charging, move it to a cooler place, and let it cool before trying again. On a Pixel, Google documents camera shutdown as one possible protective response.
- If it still stops, identify the exact setup. Check the phone model, software version, camera app, selected resolution or special mode, stop time, and remaining storage. Those details are needed to distinguish a device-specific limit from a problem that needs manufacturer support.
What a 10-minute stop does—and does not—tell you
Ten minutes is documented in two specific cases: certain Galaxy phones recording in UHD or 8K, and Pixel phones recording with Video Boost. It is not established as a standard Android recording limit. Compare the stop time with the active mode before changing settings or assuming the phone is faulty.

When to seek device-specific help
If changing a relevant recording mode, checking storage, and letting an overheated phone cool do not resolve the issue, contact the phone maker’s support or consult guidance for the exact model and camera app. The cause cannot be diagnosed reliably without those device and recording details.
