Android Auto’s Signal Bars Are Returning, but the Fix Is Still Rolling Out

Google says a fix for Android Auto’s missing cellular signal bars is rolling out, but limited reports mean not every driver has it yet.

Google is rolling out a fix for Android Auto’s missing cellular signal bars, but the rollout was not yet widespread as of Android Authority’s October 2, 2026 report. Some users had already reported seeing the bars return with Android Auto 17.8; that is not confirmation that the update fixes the issue for everyone.

What the missing signal bars mean

Google’s Android Auto help page lists signal strength alongside the time and battery status as information shown in the interface’s status area. Google’s Design for Driving documentation describes the navigation bar as appearing along the bottom or side of the display, with access to status elements such as the clock, battery status, and signal strength.

If the cellular bars disappeared from your car display, the issue described in current reports is with Android Auto’s display of that status information. The sources do not identify a hardware problem or establish that replacing a cable, adapter, phone, mount, or car part will restore the icon.

Google says a fix is rolling out

Android Authority reported on October 2, 2026, that Google employee Mishaal Rahman said the company was rolling out a fix after reports that the cellular signal indicator had been missing for months. Rahman said: “We’re aware of reports about the missing cellular signal, and we’re actually currently rolling out a fix that should hopefully address this issue!”

That statement confirms an active rollout, not an immediate fix for every driver. Android Authority reported that distribution was still limited at the time. Google has not identified the bug’s technical cause, named a stable Android Auto release that guarantees a fix, or given a date when rollout will be complete.

What Android Auto 17.8 tells us

On September 18, 2026, 9to5Google reported that some users said their signal icon returned with Android Auto 17.8. The reports were limited, so version 17.8 should be treated as an early sighting rather than a confirmed universal fix. One user also reported clearing the app cache after installing the update, but that anecdote does not establish cache clearing as a general remedy.

Should you join the Android Auto beta?

Google lets Android phone users opt into the Android Auto beta for early access to updates. Its beta program guidance also warns that beta versions may be less stable and some features may not work properly. Joining is an option if you accept that trade-off, but Google has not promised that every beta user will receive this particular fix immediately.

What to do while the rollout continues

  • Install Android Auto updates when they become available through your usual app update channel; the available reports do not establish a version that guarantees the bars will return.
  • If you already use Android Auto 17.8, check whether the signal indicator is visible, but do not assume its presence or absence proves that your installation is faulty.
  • Consider beta enrollment only if early access is worth the stability trade-off described by Google.
