If Android Auto won’t connect, an outdated infotainment system is one possible cause—even when your phone is up to date. Check compatibility, settings, the infotainment system and (for wired connections) the USB cable first. If those checks do not help, see whether the maker offers firmware for your exact car or receiver. An update may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix.
Start with compatibility and infotainment settings
Android Auto requires a compatible phone and a compatible vehicle or aftermarket receiver. Having a USB port does not, by itself, mean the vehicle supports Android Auto. Check Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guidance and confirm support for your exact vehicle or receiver.

- Confirm the vehicle or receiver supports Android Auto.
- Make sure Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system’s settings.
- Restart the infotainment system, then try connecting again.
For wired Android Auto, check the cable
A cable can fail even if it worked before. Google recommends a high-quality USB cable under 1 metre (3 feet), and advises against USB hubs and extension cables. If Android Auto worked properly before and has stopped, Google says replacing the USB cable will likely fix the issue; that is guidance, not a guarantee for every connection failure. See Google’s cable and connection troubleshooting steps.
Phone updates and car firmware are different
Android Auto is integrated into Android phones, so Google says you do not need to download a separate Android Auto app. During setup, the phone may prompt you to update Android Auto. Check the phone’s software and Google Play update paths if setup calls for an update. That phone-side update is separate from firmware installed on the vehicle’s infotainment system or an aftermarket receiver. Google’s setup instructions explain the phone and connection setup.

| Update path | Where it runs | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Android or Android Auto update | On the phone | Phone software settings or Google Play; follow any setup prompt from Android Auto. |

Check for vehicle or receiver firmware
If compatibility, settings, a restart and (where relevant) the cable have not resolved the problem, check for a firmware update from the manufacturer of the exact infotainment system. Google specifically advises owners of aftermarket Pioneer and Kenwood receivers to check the manufacturer’s website. For factory-installed systems, use the automaker’s official support page and identify the vehicle accurately.
There is no single update button or procedure for every car. Depending on the system, an update may be delivered over Wi-Fi, by USB or SD card, or with dealer support. Follow only the instructions for your exact vehicle or receiver, including its model, head unit and region; do not install firmware from an unrelated download source. An update cannot make unsupported hardware compatible with Android Auto, and installing one does not ensure a connection problem will be fixed.

When the connection problem began after an update
If Android Auto stopped working right after an Android, phone-software or Android Auto update, check Google’s Android Auto Known Issues page before changing vehicle software. Its status can change: the page was updated September 10, 2026, and listed issues as recently addressed or still under investigation at that time. Check its current entries for your issue rather than assuming a vehicle firmware update is the answer.

What vehicle updates can—and cannot—address
Engadget’s September 12, 2026 report said a Hyundai infotainment update released in February 2026 for ccNC-equipped vehicles in Europe included improved wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, quicker reconnection if a phone became unresponsive, and automatic restoration after restart. Those details concern the reported system and region; they do not establish that other Hyundai models or regions received the same changes.

The same report noted that Chevrolet lists updating phone and vehicle software as an early troubleshooting step for applicable vehicles. Treat both examples as manufacturer-specific context, not evidence that every car has an available update or that firmware will fix every Android Auto problem. Check the instructions for your exact system.
If you use wireless Android Auto
The short-cable recommendation applies only to wired connections. Wireless setup requires a compatible vehicle or receiver and initial Bluetooth pairing. Google’s setup instructions say to have Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Location Services turned on during setup. If wireless Android Auto is failing, verify compatibility and follow the Google setup steps before pursuing a cable change.
