But Google does not guarantee that every part of Android Auto phone projection will continue to work after your phone loses its cellular connection. Treat offline navigation as a prepared fallback, not as a promise of full online functionality.
Does Android Auto work without internet?
It may, depending on the task and your phone, vehicle, apps, and setup. Android Auto can display navigation from Google Maps or another compatible app, but Google’s documentation does not guarantee that the projected interface or every feature will keep working when the phone has no internet connection. Live traffic and other network-dependent services may be limited or unavailable.

Google’s setup requirements include an active data plan and network access during setup. The documentation does not clarify whether the data-plan requirement applies only during setup or to all later use, so it does not establish that Android Auto either always works or categorically stops when service drops. Check how your own setup behaves before relying on it.

Google Maps on an Android phone can provide driving guidance offline if the entire route is inside a map area downloaded in advance. Google Maps Help puts the key condition plainly: “If your internet connection is slow or unavailable, your offline maps can guide you to your destination as long as the entire route is within the offline map.” Google Maps Help: Download areas and navigate offline
#1 Best Overall
- Bright, high-resolution 5” glass capacitive touchscreen display lets you easily view your route
- Get more situational awareness with alerts for school zones, speed changes, sharp curves and more
- View food, fuel and rest areas along your active route, and see upcoming cities and milestones
- View Tripadvisor traveler ratings for top-rated restaurants, hotels and attractions to help you make the most of road trips
- Directory of U.S. national parks simplifies navigation to entrances, visitor centers and landmarks within the parks
Offline driving has important limits: there is no traffic information or alternate-route guidance, and offline directions are not available for transit, bicycling, or walking. Map downloads are unavailable in some countries or regions because of contractual, language, address-format, or other restrictions. Google Maps attempts to update an offline map when it is within 15 days of expiring and the phone is connected to Wi-Fi; you can also update it manually.
Prepare navigation before you lose coverage
- Download the map while online. In Google Maps, open your profile picture, choose Offline maps, then tap Select your own map. Adjust the area and tap Download. Google says you need an internet connection and to be signed in; the map can be saved locally or to an SD card.
- Check the whole route fits. Make sure the downloaded area covers the entire planned drive, not just the destination. If your trip leaves the saved area, offline guidance may not reach the end.
- Open the destination while connected. Confirm that the address and route are the ones you intend to use. Do not count on live online search results or continuous place search once connectivity is gone.
- Check the map’s status. In Offline maps, confirm the area is present and update it if needed. Google Maps may update it over Wi-Fi when it is nearing expiration, but do not assume an old map is current.
- Test your setup before the trip. If practical, disable mobile data temporarily and check whether your phone, car display, navigation app, voice commands, search, and rerouting behave as you need. This verifies your particular combination; Google’s documentation does not guarantee every projected feature offline.
What happens to music, podcasts, calls, and messages?
Android Auto supports media through compatible phone apps, but Google does not promise a universal offline mode or guarantee that a particular app’s downloads will play in every Android Auto setup. Some apps require a sign-in, subscription, or premium account. Download the playlist or podcast in the app while online, then verify playback before you leave.

- Explore confidently with the reliable handheld GPS
- 2.2” sunlight-readable color display with 240 x 320 display pixels for improved readability
- Preloaded with Topo Active maps with routable roads and trails for cycling and hiking
- Support for GPS and GLONASS satellite systems allows for tracking in more challenging environments than GPS alone
- 8 GB of internal memory for map downloads plus a micro SD card slot
Do not assume calls, text messages, or voice-assistant features will work without service. Their availability can depend on the phone, app, vehicle, account, and network. Google’s information about some Assistant functions working offline refers to Google built into certain cars, not Android Auto projected from a phone.
Android Auto and Google built-in are different
Android Auto projects compatible phone apps onto a vehicle display. Google built-in refers to Google services, including Maps, integrated into supported vehicles. Google’s offline guidance for built-in car Maps says its downloaded maps can work without an internet connection, some features such as real-time traffic are unavailable offline, and those built-in maps expire one year after download. Those details apply to Google built-in—not to Google Maps on an Android phone projected through Android Auto. Google built-in Help: Use Google Maps offline

Wired versus wireless setup
Google lists an active data plan among Android Auto setup requirements and says the phone should be within range of a mobile data network during setup. For wired Android Auto, Google calls for a compatible car and a high-quality USB cable. Wireless Android Auto requires a compatible phone and car, an active data plan, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support; initial pairing uses Bluetooth, and Google recommends leaving Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup. Google Android Auto Help: Set up Android Auto
A cable can establish a wired connection, but it does not provide cellular service or download map data. If using one, match its ends to your phone and vehicle. Regardless of connection type, prepare offline maps and content separately.
Quick Recap
A practical no-service checklist
- Download and update the phone’s offline map area over Wi-Fi or mobile data.
- Confirm the full drive lies inside that area and the destination is correct.
- Expect no live traffic or alternate routes from offline Google Maps.
- Download audio in the chosen app and check that it plays.
- Test any navigation or voice features you plan to rely on with mobile data off.
- Keep a backup way to navigate if the route extends beyond the downloaded map or Android Auto behaves differently than expected.
