Google’s published guidance still lists Android 9.0 or later for most wired connections. The alert may point to a future change, but it does not establish that Android 10 phones have already lost support—or how many users could be affected.
What the warning means—and what is not confirmed
Android Authority reported on October 5, 2026, that some people using Android 10 phones saw the message “Phone will no longer be supported” when connecting to Android Auto. The report says Google had not announced a change or given an end date. Its examples of phones that top out at Android 10 include the Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Galaxy S9 and Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact; this is not a complete list. (Android Authority’s report)

The alert may mean Google plans to raise the minimum Android version for wired Android Auto, potentially to Android 11. That remains an interpretation, not a confirmed requirement. Google’s current support pages continue to distinguish the requirements by connection type, and no reliable count of potentially affected users has been published. The “millions” in the report’s headline is not a verified affected-user estimate.
Android Auto’s published phone requirements
| Connection | Google’s current published requirement | Other requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Wired, over USB | Android 9.0 (Pie) or higher for most connections | A compatible car or stereo; a USB port alone does not guarantee Android Auto support. |
| Wireless projection | Android 11.0 or higher on a compatible phone | A compatible car or stereo, an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support. In the EU, additional regulatory requirements apply to 5 GHz Wi-Fi in cars; Google says Pixel 3 and newer comply. |
These are Google’s current setup requirements. Google’s troubleshooting guidance also says to use Android 9.0 or later and a data plan. Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones, so Google says a separate app installation is not needed to use it on a car display.

Check your phone and connection
- Find your Android version. Open your phone’s Settings and look for the Android version in the device’s software or system information. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Check whether the phone maker offers an operating-system update.
- Identify how you connect. For most wired connections, Google currently lists Android 9.0 or later. Wireless projection currently requires Android 11.0 or later, plus the wireless requirements above. An Android 10 phone is below Google’s published wireless minimum, but is not below the published minimum for most wired connections.
- Verify your car or stereo. Check the vehicle maker’s compatibility information or the stereo manufacturer’s documentation for your exact model. A USB port by itself does not prove compatibility. Google provides further Android Auto product and vehicle information.
- Separate an OS warning from a connection fault. If you see the support warning, note your Android version and whether the connection is wired or wireless. If Android Auto simply stopped connecting, try the cable and infotainment checks below before assuming the phone has reached a software limit.
If a wired connection stopped working
A cable or car-system problem can interrupt Android Auto even when the phone meets the published Android requirement. Google recommends checking both the cable and the car’s infotainment settings.
- Make sure Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system, then restart that system.
- Try a high-quality USB cable shorter than 1 meter. Connect directly, without a hub or extension. Google advises: “For the best quality and reliability when you connect to Android Auto try a high-quality USB cable.”
- If the connection worked before and fails now, test another suitable cable; Google says replacing a cable may fix a cable-related problem.
- If you use an aftermarket Pioneer or Kenwood receiver, check its manufacturer for firmware updates.
A new cable cannot make a phone meet a higher Android-version requirement if Google introduces one.

Should you replace your phone?
Do not replace a working phone solely on the basis of an unconfirmed cutoff. First check whether its manufacturer offers an Android update and whether the warning is appearing alongside a real connection failure. If Google confirms a new wired minimum and your phone cannot update to it, a newer compatible Android phone may be a practical fallback. Before buying, verify the specific model’s Android version and update support, and confirm it works with your car or stereo.
For now, Google’s published wired requirement remains Android 9.0 or later for most connections; the Android 10 warning reports suggest a possible change, but do not confirm one.
