Steven Spielberg is reported to be returning to the Transformers franchise as an executive producer overseeing its creative direction. Michael Bay, by contrast, is only in early talks to direct the next live-action film—not confirmed as its director. TheWrap reported the development on October 6, 2026.
Is Michael Bay directing the next Transformers movie?
Not yet, based on the available reporting. TheWrap says Bay is in early talks to direct the untitled Paramount film; it does not report a signed deal or confirmed appointment. The distinction matters: Spielberg’s return is reported as settled, while Bay’s possible directing role remains under discussion. TheWrap’s October 6 report uses “Transformers 8” in its headline, but does not establish that as an official title or numbering.

What role will Steven Spielberg have?
TheWrap reports that Spielberg will return as an executive producer and oversee the Transformers property’s creative direction. That is the role described in the report, rather than a separate studio-issued title announcement. Spielberg’s creative oversight and Bay’s possible direction are distinct roles, and the latter is not confirmed.
What is known about the next film?
Writer and setting
Jason Fuchs wrote the script, and TheWrap reports that the story is set in the present day. A June 11, 2026 report said the untitled project would continue the story after Transformers: Rise of the Beasts; it did not provide a detailed synopsis. TheWrap’s earlier report is development context, not an official plot announcement.

Plot, title, cast and release date
The plot remains under wraps. The researched reporting provides no official title, confirmed cast or release date. It also says Shia LaBeouf will not return. Those details should not be inferred from the “Transformers 8” headline or from the film’s reported connection to Rise of the Beasts.
How does the project fit the franchise?
TheWrap’s 2026 reporting gives a sense of the commercial history attached to Bay’s films and the later franchise entries. These are figures as reported by TheWrap, not independently verified totals here:

Is this the Transformers 40th-anniversary theatrical return?
No. The next live-action movie is separate from the 40th-anniversary theatrical event for the 1986 animated film. Hasbro and Fathom announced a theatrical return for September 17, 2026, with an added animated chapter; Hasbro said the event was beginning that day. Hasbro’s September 17 announcement concerns that anniversary event, not the untitled live-action project.

The anniversary announcement also named Studio Series figures inspired by The Transformers: The Movie, a Transformers toy line and a Matrix of Leadership replica. Those are existing franchise products, not merchandise announced for the upcoming film. Fathom’s event announcement provides details about the theatrical celebration.
