Android Auto itself does not supply offline maps. If your phone loses internet, navigation on the car display depends on whether the navigation app has downloaded map data covering your route and supports offline guidance. Google Maps, HERE WeGo and OsmAnd each offer offline options, but setup and capabilities differ.
What Android Auto can—and cannot—do offline
Android Auto projects compatible phone apps onto the car display; it is not a standalone mapping service. Google says Android Auto provides turn-by-turn navigation through Google Maps or a compatible navigation app (Android Auto navigation help). Losing mobile data does not automatically stop every trip, but offline guidance requires the app and map data to be ready beforehand.
Expect fewer live features without internet. For Google Maps offline driving, traffic information and alternative routes are unavailable; public-transport, cycling and walking directions are also not available offline (Google Maps offline maps help). Online search and dynamic rerouting may also be degraded or unavailable depending on the app and connection.
Which navigation apps can work without data?
| App or system | What to prepare | Offline capability and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Google Maps on an Android phone via Android Auto | Download the map area before departure. Your entire route must fit within the downloaded area. | Google documents offline driving guidance. Traffic information and alternative routes are unavailable; public-transport, cycling and walking directions are not supported offline. Google Maps Help |
| HERE WeGo via Android Auto | Download the relevant regional maps and turn on “Use app offline.” HERE says to install the app from Google Play for it to appear in Android Auto. | HERE documents offline navigation and Android Auto support. If a trip started online and the connection is lost, stop navigation and restart in offline mode. Some Android Auto controls, including adding stops or changing route preferences after guidance begins, are unsupported. Offline maps; Routing and navigation |
| OsmAnd via Android Auto | Download offline maps and use the app’s offline navigation mode. | OsmAnd documents offline routing and an Android Auto interface. Its Google Play listing says Android Auto is a paid feature and the free version allows seven map downloads or updates; check the current listing and in-app terms, which may change. OsmAnd navigation settings; Google Play listing |
| Google Maps built into a car (Google built-in) | Download maps in the car’s Maps settings or enable automatic downloads. | This is separate from Android Auto on a phone. Google says these in-car offline maps expire one year after download; real-time traffic is unavailable offline. Vehicle, region, language and data-plan differences apply. Google built-in help |
| Sygic Truck & Caravan Navigation | Download maps while online. A supported phone can connect its navigation to the vehicle display through Android Auto. | Sygic says this specific Truck & Caravan app can navigate offline after map downloads. Do not assume the same capability for Sygic’s general app without checking its own current documentation. Sygic compatibility and requirements |
How to prepare for an offline drive
- Download coverage before leaving. Use Wi-Fi or mobile data to download maps for every area your route crosses. For Google Maps, the route must remain entirely inside the downloaded map area.
- Confirm Android Auto compatibility and installation. Check the app’s current listing for your country and device. HERE specifically says it must be installed from Google Play to appear in Android Auto.
- Set offline mode where required. In HERE WeGo, download the needed regional maps and enable “Use app offline.” If you started an online route and lost internet, HERE’s instructions are to stop and restart navigation offline.
- Check the app before driving. If possible, open the downloaded area and confirm the app can locate you. Allow location access and make sure the phone has enough battery.
- Plan for destination entry and lost live services. Android Auto requires the vehicle to be in Park for typing a destination on the car screen (Android Auto navigation help). Without connectivity, live traffic, online search and dynamic rerouting may not be available.
Do not confuse Android Auto with Google built-in
Android Auto displays apps running on your phone. Google built-in is Google Maps running in a compatible car’s own system, with its own offline-map controls and rules. Google’s one-year offline-map expiration statement applies to Google Maps built into a car; it should not be applied to downloaded Google Maps areas on an Android phone connected through Android Auto.

What to expect when the signal disappears
If maps are downloaded and the chosen app supports offline guidance, you may be able to continue turn-by-turn driving without mobile internet. You should not count on traffic-aware rerouting or other live services. Coverage, vehicle compatibility and app availability can vary by region and implementation, so verify the app’s current requirements and map coverage before relying on it for a trip.
