CarPlay opens automatically in some vehicles; in others, you select its icon. Both support music playback and hands-free voice commands, but neither is universally better for music controls. The exact behavior depends on your phone, the car’s infotainment system, supported apps, and physical controls.
What happens when you start the car?
Neither system has one startup behavior that applies to every vehicle. The car’s model and infotainment equipment determine whether phone projection is available, whether it connects by cable or wirelessly, and what appears on the display.

Android Auto
After the first wireless setup, Android Auto should start within a few seconds of the phone pairing with the car over Bluetooth, according to Google’s setup guidance. The display may still show a prompt, and you may need to tap Android Auto to open it. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup, and do the setup while parked with the infotainment system on.
Android Auto is integrated into compatible phones; Google says a separate download is not needed to use it on a car display. Wired projection requires an Android phone running Android 9.0 or higher, an active data plan, a compatible car, and a high-quality USB cable. Google’s current guidance lists Android 11.0, active data, and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support for wireless projection, as well as a compatible phone and car.

Apple CarPlay
Start the car and make sure Siri is on. A supported vehicle can connect to an iPhone by USB. If the vehicle supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, connecting the iPhone by USB can offer wireless connection the next time. For a wireless-only vehicle, use its voice-command button and select its wireless or Bluetooth mode; the iPhone needs Wi-Fi enabled, Auto-Join for the CarPlay network, and the vehicle selected under Settings > General > CarPlay.
CarPlay Home appears automatically on some vehicle models. On others, select the CarPlay logo on the car display, as Apple’s connection instructions explain.
Which system has better music controls?
There is no universal winner. Both let you choose compatible media apps, control playback, and use voice interaction. The better fit depends on the apps and accounts you use, the assistant available on your phone, and how your car presents controls while driving.

Android Auto music controls
Android Auto can play music and podcasts through compatible media apps. Sign in to the app on your phone before starting Android Auto; some services require a subscription or premium account. You can open an app from the car launcher, return to a recently used media app, or request a playlist, song, artist, or podcast by voice.
Google’s current help guidance says Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices and understands the same commands. The assistant available to you can depend on your device, language, and region, so do not assume every Android Auto setup uses the same one. See Google’s media playback guidance.
CarPlay music controls
Apple documents several ways to control music in CarPlay: Siri, the Music app, steering-wheel controls, buttons on the Now Playing screen, and CarPlay Dashboard. Screen controls can include play, pause, next or previous track, shuffle, repeat, and Up Next. The choices shown in Now Playing may be limited while driving; Apple advises using More or the steering-wheel voice-command button for additional options. Details are in Apple’s CarPlay playback instructions.

What to compare in your own car
- Check whether your preferred music apps work with the system and whether they require sign-in or a paid subscription.
- Try the controls you will actually use: touchscreen, steering-wheel buttons, rotary knob, or touchpad.
- See whether the music controls are easy to reach from the default screen, or require extra taps.
- Consider which voice assistant is available for your phone, language, and region.
CarPlay can work with a vehicle touchscreen, rotary knob, or touchpad; the available controls depend on the car. Apple recommends consulting the vehicle manual to learn its control layout. Android Auto’s music experience also depends on the compatible apps and the car’s display and controls.

Check the exact phone and vehicle configuration—not just the car brand or whether it has a USB socket. A USB port alone does not establish that the port supports phone projection.
- Record your phone details. Note the phone model and operating system version. For Android Auto, check the requirements for your intended wired or wireless connection.
- Identify the exact vehicle configuration. Record the make, model, year, trim, and infotainment system. Equipment can vary within a model line.
- Choose wired or wireless. Confirm that the exact vehicle configuration supports the connection type you want. For Android wireless projection, verify wireless support for both the phone and car. For CarPlay, check whether the vehicle supports wired CarPlay, wireless CarPlay, or both.
- Check official sources. Use the vehicle maker’s compatibility list and owner’s manual. For an aftermarket receiver, check its maker’s support information and available firmware as Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends.
- Set it up while parked. Follow the phone and vehicle instructions, and use a suitable cable for a wired connection. Google specifies a high-quality USB cable for Android Auto; Apple recommends an Apple USB cable in its connection steps.
Which one should you choose?
If your car supports only one system, that determines the choice unless you change the vehicle’s equipment. If it supports both, make the decision around your phone, apps, and car controls rather than a general claim that one has better music controls.
Quick Recap
- Choose around your phone: Android Auto is for compatible Android phones; CarPlay connects an iPhone to a compatible vehicle.
- Choose around the connection: Check whether your car and phone support the wired or wireless setup you want, including whether wireless projection reconnects as expected.
- Choose around music: Confirm that your preferred apps and accounts work, then see how playback controls appear in your car.
- Choose around the interface: Compare what you can reach from the display and physical controls without relying on a different vehicle’s layout.
