Android Auto works with compatible Android phones; Apple CarPlay works with iPhone. Both project selected navigation, calling, messaging, and media functions onto a compatible car display. Which one you can use is determined first by your phone, then by your vehicle’s exact model and trim—and whether it supports wired, wireless, or both connection types.
Android Auto vs. CarPlay at a glance
| Comparison | Android Auto | Apple CarPlay |
|---|---|---|
| Compatible phone | Compatible Android phone | iPhone |
| Core functions | Supported navigation, calls, messages, and media apps | Supported directions, calls, messages, music, and other functions |
| Connection options | Wired or wireless, depending on phone and car compatibility | Wired or wireless, depending on vehicle support |
| Voice interaction | Google’s assistant experience; availability may vary during the staged Gemini transition | Siri |
| Vehicle controls | Depends on the vehicle’s infotainment system | May include a touchscreen, rotary control, or touchpad, depending on the vehicle |
These platforms are not interchangeable: an iPhone does not use Android Auto, and an Android phone does not use CarPlay. The official product documentation describes each platform separately; it does not establish a universal winner or provide controlled comparisons of speed, reliability, or safety outcomes.

Which phones and cars are compatible?
Android Auto requirements
Google’s Android Auto setup and requirements specify an Android phone running Android 9.0 (Pie) or later with an active data plan for wired display use, plus a compatible car and high-quality USB cable. Wireless projection requires a compatible phone with an active data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, as well as a compatible car or stereo. Google says wireless projection is compatible with phones running Android 11.0. Regional rules can affect 5 GHz use in the EU.
Apple CarPlay requirements
CarPlay requires an iPhone and a vehicle that supports it. Check Apple’s CarPlay setup and connection guide and the vehicle’s manual for the specific model and trim. A USB port alone does not prove that a car supports phone projection: a vehicle may support Android Auto, CarPlay, both, or neither, and may offer only one connection mode.

Check the exact vehicle before relying on a feature
- Look up the vehicle’s model year and trim in the manufacturer’s compatibility information or owner’s manual.
- Confirm whether the car supports Android Auto, CarPlay, or both.
- Check whether the supported platform works over USB, wirelessly, or both. Do not assume wireless support because wired projection is available.
- For an aftermarket stereo, verify its exact features and vehicle fitment; compatibility and installation requirements vary by model.
What features do both systems offer?
Both platforms bring selected phone apps and functions to the car display, chiefly navigation, communication, and media. The app must support the relevant in-car platform; availability and controls can differ by app and vehicle. Some Android Auto media apps may require you to sign in or have a subscription.
Navigation and media apps
Android Auto can show compatible navigation and music apps. CarPlay provides supported directions and music functions. Compare the apps you actually use and confirm they are available for the relevant in-car system rather than assuming every phone app will appear on the dashboard.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Calls, messages, and voice control
Both systems support calls and messages, with voice interaction available through their respective assistant experiences. Siri handles CarPlay voice interactions. Google’s support material describes a staged transition in which Gemini is replacing Google Assistant on most mobile devices, so Android Auto assistant functionality may not be identical for every user.

The experience is shaped by the car as well as the phone. CarPlay controls may use a touchscreen, rotary control, or touchpad, depending on the vehicle. Check the controls in the specific car you plan to use; the platform label alone does not describe how you will operate it.

How do wired and wireless connections work?
Android Auto wired setup
- Park the car and start its infotainment system.
- Connect the compatible Android phone to the vehicle’s USB port with a high-quality data-capable cable.
- Follow the on-screen prompts on the phone and car. Requirements and prompts can vary by vehicle.
Android Auto wireless setup
- Confirm that both the phone and car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
- Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup, and ensure the phone has an active data plan.
- Pair the phone and vehicle over Bluetooth, then follow the prompts to complete wireless projection. Google recommends setting up while the vehicle is in Park.
CarPlay wired setup
- Start the car and make sure Siri is enabled.
- Connect the iPhone to the car’s USB port using a suitable cable.
- If the vehicle supports both wired and wireless CarPlay, the first USB connection may offer wireless CarPlay for future drives.
CarPlay wireless setup
For a wireless-only vehicle, Apple’s instructions may involve holding the steering-wheel voice-command button, switching the stereo to wireless or Bluetooth mode, and selecting the car in iPhone Settings. Enable Wi-Fi and Auto-Join for the CarPlay network when prompted. The precise steps vary by vehicle, so use its manual alongside Apple’s setup guide.

Android Auto
- Try a different high-quality USB cable. Google notes that not all cables work with every car and recommends trying one shorter than 1 metre (3 feet).
- Connect directly to the car rather than through a hub or extension.
- Check that Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system.
- Look for receiver firmware updates and follow the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.
These steps help diagnose a supported wired setup; a cable cannot add Android Auto projection to a car that does not support it. Google’s Android Auto troubleshooting guide has further connection advice.

Quick Recap
How to choose between Android Auto and CarPlay
- Start with your phone. Choose the platform compatible with the phone you use; the two systems do not provide cross-platform projection.
- Confirm the car’s support. Check the exact model and trim, then verify the platform and connection mode in the manufacturer’s information or manual.
- Compare your apps. Check whether your preferred navigation, messaging, and media apps support the in-car system.
- Consider voice control and physical controls. Decide whether you prefer Siri or Google’s assistant experience, and try the car’s touchscreen, buttons, rotary control, or touchpad.
- Choose wired or wireless based on actual support. Wireless can avoid plugging in for each drive, but it requires compatible equipment and setup; wired use depends on a supported USB connection and a suitable cable.
