Capturing the image projected on your car’s Android Auto display is different: a Share screenshot now command may appear in Android Auto Developer settings on some versions, but Google does not currently document it as a universal feature.
First, choose which screen you want to capture
Android Auto projects an experience from your connected phone to a compatible car screen. Android Automotive OS is a separate system built into some vehicles. The steps below address Android Auto, not screenshots of a vehicle’s built-in Android Automotive OS interface. Google explains the distinction between Android Auto and Android Automotive OS.

- Phone display: Use Android’s ordinary screenshot controls. This captures what is visible on the phone.
- Projected car display: You may be able to use a separate command in Android Auto Developer settings. Its availability is not confirmed for all phones or versions.
Take a screenshot of your phone
- Open the screen you want to capture on your phone.
- Press Power and Volume down at the same time.
- If that shortcut does not work, press and hold Power for a few seconds, then tap Screenshot in the Power menu, if available.
- Use the on-screen preview to edit or share the image.
Google documents both methods for capturing a phone screen; the exact controls can vary by phone. See Google’s Android screenshot instructions.

In Google Photos, open Collections > On this device > Screenshots. On some older phones without Photos, check the Screenshots folder in the Gallery app. Labels and locations can vary with the device’s software.

Capture a scrolling page
Scrolling screenshots are a separate Android feature. Google says they work on Android 12 and up on most screens that allow scrolling. Google’s instructions cover scrolling screenshots as well.
Try capturing the projected Android Auto display
Google’s current help explains how to enable Android Auto Developer settings, but it does not document a general screenshot command in those settings. A community technical report dated February 22, 2026, and an Audi technical document from 2016 describe a command called Share screenshot now. Its presence and wording may depend on the Android Auto version, and Google does not guarantee it across devices.

- On your phone, open Settings, search for Android Auto, and select Android Auto Settings.
- Tap Version to expand Version and permission info.
- Tap Version and permission info ten times, or until the development-settings prompt appears, then accept the prompt.
- Open the menu and select Developer settings.
- Look for Share screenshot now. If it is present, try that command to capture the projected display. The community report and older Audi document describe this flow; current official Google help does not confirm it as a universal option.
Google’s Android Auto instructions explain the Developer settings steps in the context of setting up a bug report. If you do not see the screenshot command, the ordinary phone screenshot shortcut should not be assumed to capture the image shown on the car display. A cable is not required just to enable Developer settings: Google says bug-report setup can use a wired or wireless car connection.
When you need evidence for an Android Auto problem
If you are documenting a malfunction for Google, use the official Android Auto bug-report process rather than relying on a screenshot alone. Keep the phone connected to the car while capturing and sending the report; Google warns that disconnecting can lose important information. Interactive bug reports can include screenshots and additional details in the report ZIP file. Follow Google’s Android Auto bug-report instructions.
