Android Auto Phone Compatibility: What to Check Before You Connect

Android Auto needs a supported Android phone and a compatible car. Wired and wireless connections have different requirements, and Android Go is excluded.

No. Android Auto does not work on every Android phone. Wired use requires Android 9.0 (Pie) or later and an active data plan; Android (Go edition) devices are not supported. Wireless use has additional phone and 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirements. In either case, the car or receiver must also support Android Auto.

Check whether your phone meets the requirements

The requirements depend on whether you plan to connect by USB or wirelessly. Google’s Android Auto requirements are the reference to check for your exact phone and region, since supported devices and country availability may change.

Connection Phone requirements Other requirements
Wired Android 9.0 (Pie) or later; Android (Go edition) is not supported. Active data plan, compatible car or receiver, and a suitable USB data cable.
Wireless Generally, Android 11 or later; Google or Samsung phones on Android 10; or specified Samsung Galaxy S8, S8+, and Note 8 models on Android 9. Android (Go edition) is not supported. 5 GHz Wi-Fi support, an active data plan, and a compatible car or receiver.

Google’s listed wireless phone categories are not a guarantee for every model or region. Check the current requirements for your specific device. Meeting the phone requirements also does not establish that your car supports Android Auto.

Confirm that your car supports Android Auto

The car’s USB port alone is not enough: Google notes that Android Auto does not work in every car equipped with one. Check the exact vehicle model and trim with the manufacturer, or verify that an aftermarket receiver supports Android Auto. Google’s compatibility guidance can help identify supported cars and receivers.

Set up a wired or wireless connection

Wired connection

  1. Check that your phone meets the wired requirements and your car or receiver supports Android Auto.
  2. Connect the phone directly to the car with a high-quality USB cable. Google recommends a cable under 1 metre; avoid hubs and extensions.
  3. Follow the prompts on the phone and car display to complete setup.

Wireless connection

  1. Park the car and turn on its infotainment system.
  2. Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth for the first setup.
  3. Leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services turned on while completing setup, and follow the prompts on both screens.

For car-display use, Android Auto is integrated into the phone; a separate Play Store app is not required. See Google’s setup instructions for current steps.

Troubleshoot a connection that does not work

  • Check compatibility first. Confirm the phone, connection type, country, and exact car or receiver all meet the relevant requirements. A cable cannot make an unsupported phone or vehicle compatible.
  • For USB problems, try another cable. Use a high-quality cable under 1 metre, connect directly without a hub or extension, and try a replacement if a previously working connection has stopped. Google’s USB troubleshooting guidance explains cable checks.
  • For wireless problems, repeat initial pairing. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on, and do the setup while parked with the infotainment system on.
  • Check the car’s settings. Verify Android Auto is enabled in the infotainment system. If you use an aftermarket receiver, check its maker’s site for firmware updates.
  • Escalate unresolved issues. Google advises checking device and connection compatibility or contacting the vehicle manufacturer.
