You can display Android Auto on a Windows, macOS, or Linux computer using Google’s Desktop Head Unit (DHU), but it is a developer tool for testing Android Auto apps—not a standard consumer feature for turning a PC into a car display. The DHU connects to a real Android phone and opens an emulated head unit window on the computer.
What Android Auto on a PC actually means
Google describes the Desktop Head Unit as a way for a development machine to emulate an Android Auto head unit so developers can run and test Android Auto apps. It is not the same as using Android Auto on a compatible car display, and Google’s consumer setup instructions do not present the DHU as an everyday desktop feature.

What you need before setting up the DHU
- A Windows, macOS, or Linux development computer with Android Studio.
- An Android phone; Google’s documented developer-mode workflow requires Android 9 or later. For Android 10 or later, Google says the phone must be signed in to Google Play and Android Auto updated before the first DHU run.
- A USB data cable when using the documented wired connection. Match the cable connectors to the phone and computer, and make sure it supports data—not just charging.
- On Linux, GLIBC 2.32 or later and the
libc++1andlibc++abi1libraries for DHU 2.x.
Setup requirements and interface details can change, so check Google’s current DHU instructions if your SDK or phone behaves differently.
Install the Desktop Head Unit
- Install and open Android Studio.
- Open SDK Manager, select the SDK Tools tab, and download Android Auto Desktop Head Unit Emulator.
- Locate the downloaded tool in the Android SDK’s
extras/google/auto/directory.
The DHU package is the emulator window; your Android phone supplies the Android Auto connection. A cable alone does not make Android Auto appear on a PC.

Connect the phone using USB Accessory Mode
For DHU 2.x, Android Developers recommends USB Accessory Mode. Connect the phone to the computer with a data-capable cable, then launch the DHU from its SDK directory using ./desktop-head-unit --usb on macOS or Linux. On Windows, run the corresponding executable with the USB option.
Windows may need the WinUSB driver for this mode. Google notes that the driver can interfere with ADB; if the phone is not discovered, try adb kill-server or use the ADB tunneling method instead.

Connect through ADB tunneling
ADB tunneling is an alternate phone-to-computer connection method. Follow these steps in order:
- Enable Android Auto developer mode on the phone and start the head unit server in the Android Auto app.
- In Android Auto settings, make sure Add new cars to Android Auto is enabled.
- Connect the unlocked phone to the computer by USB.
- Run
adb forward tcp:5277 tcp:5277on the computer. This forwards the Android Auto head unit server connection on TCP port 5277. - Launch the DHU from the SDK’s
extras/google/auto/directory.
On first connection, the phone may ask you to accept terms or grant permissions. Android Developers documents the head unit server and ADB steps in its DHU setup guide.

What the DHU is useful for
The DHU can emulate touchscreen and rotary input, and can be configured for resolution, DPI, and frame rate. Those options let developers check how an Android Auto app behaves across different head-unit input layouts and display settings. They do not turn the DHU into a fully supported consumer replacement for a vehicle’s infotainment screen.

For ordinary vehicle use, first confirm that the vehicle supports Android Auto. For wired setup, Google says to connect the phone to the vehicle’s USB port while the car is parked and the infotainment system is on. For wireless first-time setup, the vehicle must support wireless Android Auto; pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, and leave Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during setup. Those instructions apply to a compatible car display, not the DHU’s developer connection to a workstation.
