Google announced on May 12, 2026 that Android Auto will add video playback in supported cars later in 2026. The feature is intended for use while parked; when you shift into drive, video changes to audio-only only in apps that support background audio. Google has not named eligible models, model years, countries, or a precise release date, so the announcement does not confirm that the feature is available in your car today.
What Google announced for Android Auto
Google says supported cars will be able to play videos in Android Auto apps such as YouTube, at “60fps full HD.” The announcement describes a planned rollout “later” in 2026, not a feature guaranteed to be live in every Android Auto vehicle. Google’s May 12, 2026 announcement is the source for the resolution, frame rate, timing, and initial automaker list.

The announcement names BMW, Ford, Genesis, Hyundai, Kia, Mahindra, Mercedes-Benz, Renault, Škoda, Tata, and Volvo as automakers in the initial group. It does not say which specific models or model years will qualify, or identify supported countries. A manufacturer’s name on the list is not enough to establish that a particular car can play video.

The catch: screen video is for when the car is parked
Google frames the feature as a way to watch while parked. When the car shifts into drive, video transitions to audio-only only in apps that support background audio. That qualification matters: Google’s announcement does not promise that YouTube video audio—or audio from every supported video app—will continue after driving begins.

This is a parked-use feature, not permission to watch a screen while driving. Google’s parked-app guidance describes the distinction between parked experiences and driving-safe use. Follow local laws and your vehicle’s safety instructions.
How to check whether your car is eligible
Google’s announcement does not provide a model-by-model compatibility checker or a setup path. Before expecting the feature, verify support for your exact configuration rather than relying only on the automaker list.

- Car: Check the exact model and model year with the automaker or dealer. The announcement does not identify qualifying models.
- Market: Confirm availability for your country. Google has not specified rollout countries.
- Software: Check for updates to the vehicle’s infotainment software and Android Auto. The announcement does not give minimum version numbers.
- App behavior: Confirm whether the video app supports background audio if you expect sound to continue after shifting into drive.
- Rollout status: Look for confirmation from Google or your automaker that the feature has reached your car. “Later in 2026” is not a specific launch date.
Because those requirements are not yet specified at model level in the announcement, there is no reliable universal set of installation steps to give. Google’s Android Auto media help covers existing media use, but should not be read as confirmation that video playback is enabled in a particular vehicle.

Android Auto projects compatible phone apps onto a car’s display. Cars with Google built-in run Google’s in-car platform directly. Google said in 2023 that automakers could offer YouTube in cars with Google built-in; that is separate from the Android Auto video rollout announced in 2026. See Google’s 2023 announcement for that earlier platform context.

YouTube Music is an audio service, not the newly announced ability to show YouTube video on an Android Auto screen. The 2026 announcement concerns video playback in supported Android Auto cars, subject to the parked-use limitation.
Does it require an adapter or extra hardware?
Google’s announcement does not identify an adapter, add-on head unit, streaming box, or other accessory as a requirement. It also does not establish that buying one would make an unsupported car eligible. Check your vehicle’s official compatibility information rather than assuming an accessory can enable the feature.
