Android Auto Connection Problems? Check These Causes First

A practical guide to checking Android Auto compatibility, setting up wired or wireless connections, and troubleshooting common connection failures safely.

Android Auto connection problems are not always caused by the phone. Compatibility, setup conditions, the USB cable, and the car’s infotainment settings can all be involved. Check that your car and phone support the connection type you want before troubleshooting, and do setup changes while parked.

Check compatibility before troubleshooting

Android Auto requires both a compatible phone and a compatible car or aftermarket stereo. A USB port in the dashboard is not proof that the vehicle supports Android Auto. Check Google’s Android Auto compatibility information and the vehicle or stereo maker’s documentation for your exact model.

Google lists Android 9.0 or higher for most wired connections and Android 11.0 or higher for wireless connections and selected newer vehicles. Requirements and supported-vehicle lists can change, so verify the current information for your phone and car rather than relying on a general model-year assumption. See Google’s compatibility and troubleshooting guidance.

Choose wired or wireless setup based on what both devices support

Connection What you need Initial setup
Wired A compatible phone and car or stereo, plus a suitable USB data cable and the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port. Connect the phone, then follow the prompts on the phone and infotainment display.
Wireless A compatible phone and a car or stereo that supports wireless Android Auto. Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth; keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on during setup.

Support for one mode does not establish support for the other. Google’s compatibility information can help you check whether your phone and vehicle support the mode you intend to use.

Set up Android Auto while parked

For first-time setup, put the car in Park, turn on the infotainment system, and allow time to complete the prompts before driving. Google’s setup instructions cover both connection methods.

For a wired connection

  1. Confirm that the car or stereo supports wired Android Auto and identify its supported USB port.
  2. Connect the phone directly to that port with a suitable USB data cable. Do not use a hub or extension.
  3. Follow the on-screen prompts on the phone and the car display. If Android Auto does not open automatically, look for its icon and tap it while parked.

For a wireless connection

  1. Confirm that both the phone and the specific car or stereo support wireless Android Auto.
  2. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone, then pair the phone and car through Bluetooth as directed by the infotainment system.
  3. Allow a few seconds for Android Auto to start. If it does not, follow the prompts and check whether you need to tap the Android Auto icon.

Troubleshoot in an order that narrows the cause

If a wired connection fails

  • Check that you are using the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port, not simply any port that charges a phone.
  • Try a known-compatible, high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), connected directly without a hub or extension. Google suggests trying the phone’s original cable. A cable from another maker may also be suitable if it meets USB Implementers Forum standards; Google links to USB-IF product information.
  • If the connection used to work and has stopped, testing another suitable cable is a reasonable first step. It will not fix an incompatible car or a wireless-only setup.

Google’s USB cable troubleshooting guidance notes that not all cables work with all cars. Test the cable and correct port before buying anything; a new cable is not a guaranteed fix.

  • Requires Android 11+

If a wireless connection fails

  • Make sure the car or stereo and phone both support wireless Android Auto.
  • During setup, keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on, and confirm the phone is paired with the car through Bluetooth.
  • Follow any prompts on the infotainment display and check whether the Android Auto icon needs to be tapped.

Check the vehicle and software

  1. Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings.
  2. Restart the infotainment system. For an aftermarket receiver, check its manufacturer’s support page for firmware updates.
  3. Check for phone and vehicle software updates, then restart both if connection problems continue. Chevrolet’s Android Auto support guidance also recommends checking wireless Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings when relevant.
  4. If you are setting up Android Auto in a second car, remove previously connected cars from Android Auto’s settings and pair again, as described in Google’s setup guidance.
  5. If these checks do not resolve the fault, contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer for model-specific help.

Keep setup and use safe

Make connection and settings changes while parked, not while moving. Android Auto does not remove the need to pay attention: Google’s guidance is, “Drive safely. Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.” Use voice controls or vehicle controls only when doing so is safe and lawful.

Android Developers documents a narrower parked-use feature: on Android 15 or higher, supported parked apps can run on the head unit while parked, and Android Auto automatically exits an app when vehicle motion is detected. This describes supported app behavior, not permission to interact with the screen while driving. See the Android for Cars testing documentation.
