In Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, FE stands for “Fan Edition.” Samsung used the name for a Galaxy S20-series phone built around a selection of features it said Galaxy fans valued. It describes Samsung’s product positioning—not proof that fans designed or independently tested the phone.
Why Samsung called it the Fan Edition
Samsung announced the Galaxy S20 FE on September 23, 2020, as a member of the Galaxy S20 family. Its launch materials presented the phone as a more accessible way to get selected features from that series. Samsung’s specifications overview likewise describes the model in terms of features selected for Galaxy fans.

Samsung’s UK launch announcement framed the rationale around demand for a phone that could take photos and perform throughout the day at a competitive price. The statement came from Conor Pierce, then corporate vice president of Samsung UK and Ireland; it is Samsung’s explanation of its product strategy, not an independent consumer study. What Samsung highlighted in the S20 FE
Samsung’s US launch announcement highlighted a 6.5-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, a 4,500mAh battery and an IP68 water- and dust-resistance rating. It also pointed to camera capabilities, chipset, connectivity, expandable storage and a streamlined design as part of the selected-feature proposition. The label does not mean every Galaxy fan selected each component, nor does it establish that every S20 FE configuration has identical hardware or connectivity. “Fan Edition” is a name for Samsung’s product and its positioning within the S20 family.
Launch prices were regional and historical
Samsung Electronics America gave the 5G model a US starting price of $699 at launch in 2020. Samsung Electronics listed a UK launch price of £599. Which S20 FE version do you have?
Samsung’s launch materials describe regional and network variations: the US announcement discusses 5G and 5G UW versions, while the UK announcement says 4G and 5G models were available. For carrier compatibility, accessories or replacement parts, identify the exact model number and region, then check the relevant carrier or seller’s compatibility information. The FE name alone does not tell you which network bands or carrier configuration a particular handset supports.

What the launch announcement does—and does not—say about updates
Samsung’s US announcement promised three generations of Android operating-system upgrades for Galaxy users at the time of launch. That historical promise does not establish whether a particular S20 FE remains eligible for updates today, its current security-patch status or an end-of-support date.
