Android requires you to allow the source before it can install that app. The key safety question is not simply whether an app is sideloaded, but whether you can verify who supplied it and why you need it.
What sideloading means—and what an APK is
An APK is Android’s installable app package. Sideloading describes installing an app from outside Google Play; it is a distribution route, not a particular type of app or device. Developers may distribute apps through marketplaces or their own websites, and a direct APK is not automatically unsafe. However, the source matters: an APK from an impersonator or an untrusted distributor can be malicious or altered. Android’s alternative distribution guide explains the options and the system’s protections.

An Android App Bundle is a publishing format, not a file you can install directly. A distributor processes it into APKs for devices. Android requires APKs to be cryptographically signed; that signature helps maintain the app’s update identity, but does not establish that the publisher is trustworthy. A device-optimized APK may also fail to install or run on a device with different properties, such as a different chip architecture. See Android’s App Bundle FAQ.

Why Android asks you to allow an installation source
Android blocks installations from unknown sources until you opt in. On Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later, permission is granted to a particular source app—for example, the browser or file manager you use to open the APK. On Android 7.1.1 (API level 25) and earlier, Android’s guide documents a system-wide Unknown sources setting under Settings > Security, and recommends allowing only one installation at a time when that option is available.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Menu names and locations can differ by manufacturer, and some network providers may restrict installations. If the documented path does not match your device, search Settings for Install unknown apps or Unknown sources. The Android guide describes the version behavior, not every manufacturer’s exact menu.
What can go wrong with an APK from outside Google Play?
- Impersonation: A fake download page or app can imitate a legitimate developer and persuade you to install something else.
- Malicious or modified software: An app may misuse permissions you grant it. A signing identity can help show that updates come from the same key holder, but it is not a safety endorsement.
- Pressure and deception: A caller, message, or pop-up may rush you into installing an app or changing a security setting. Android’s developer-verification team describes its newer friction as a response to coercion and scams in its March 19, 2026 explanation.
- Code-tampering risks: Android’s security checklist warns developers against dynamically loading code from outside an app’s APK, because that can increase exposure to injection or tampering; such code runs with the app’s permissions. This is guidance about how apps are built, not a claim that every APK a user installs loads external code.
- Compatibility problems: An APK copied from another device may not suit yours, including because of architecture or other device properties.
Android’s official materials do not establish a universal probability that a sideloaded app will be harmful. Installing from outside Google Play does not by itself mean your device has been infected; the practical concern is whether the particular app and its source deserve your trust.

How to reduce avoidable risk before installing
- Start with a reason. Install only an app you intentionally sought, not one a stranger or unexpected prompt tells you to add.
- Find the source independently. Navigate to the developer’s genuine website or a marketplace you trust yourself rather than following a link in a message, call, or pop-up.
- Check identity and purpose. Confirm that the app name, publisher, and stated function match what you intended to obtain. A familiar icon or convincing page alone is not proof.
- Grant installation access narrowly. On Android 8.0 and later, allow the specific source app you need to use, rather than treating the setting as a general endorsement of downloaded files. Turn off that source’s permission afterward if you no longer need it. On older Android versions, follow the system’s one-install-at-a-time guidance where available.
- Keep Play Protect enabled and heed its warnings. Google documents Play Protect signals for whether protection is enabled and whether known potentially harmful or dangerous apps have been found. It is a useful detection layer, not a guarantee that every app has been checked or is harmless. See Android’s Play Integrity and environment guidance.
- Stop if someone is rushing you. Do not disable protections or continue just because a caller, message, or pop-up says the action is urgent. Verify the request through a contact method or website you found independently.
These steps reduce avoidable exposure; none certifies an APK as safe.

What the newer unverified-developer flow does
As described in Android’s developer-verification FAQ, updated September 30, 2026, users can still sideload from unverified developers through an advanced flow. It is designed to add friction where someone might be pressured into bypassing safeguards, rather than eliminate the option to install unverified software. The FAQ describes these steps:
