Android 17’s Motion Assist adds moving bubbles near the edges of your screen while you use your phone as a passenger. Google designed the visual cues to help reduce motion sickness, but its published guidance does not promise that symptoms will stop. You need Android 17 or later and updated Google Play services to use it.
What is Motion Assist, and how might it help on a bus?
Motion Assist overlays small bubbles near the screen edges. According to Google’s Android Help instructions, the bubbles respond in real time to movement detected by the phone’s sensors, including a vehicle turning, speeding up or braking.

Google’s stated rationale is that these moving visual cues can better match the movement your body feels while you look at your phone. The feature is intended to help reduce motion sickness; it is not a guaranteed remedy or an established medical treatment. Google’s September 2026 Android announcement describes the same intended benefit, but the published guidance does not report a clinical study or measured success rate.

What you need before turning it on
- A device running Android 17 or higher.
- Updated Google Play services.
Meeting those requirements does not mean every Android phone will necessarily show the feature: eligibility and availability can depend on the device and software rollout. If the setting is missing, check that Android and Google Play services are up to date, then try Settings search.

How to turn on Motion Assist
Find the setting
- Open Settings.
- Tap the profile area, then choose All services.
- Under Personal & device safety, tap Motion assist.
You can also search Settings for “Motion assist.” Menu names and locations may vary by device or release. These steps follow Google’s published instructions.
Choose automatic or manual activation
Motion Assist can be set to activate automatically when it detects vehicle motion. Google notes that detection may not recognize every ride, so it recommends adding the Motion Assist tile to Quick Settings. Use that tile to switch the overlay on or off manually when automatic activation does not work as expected.
