Yes, the 7.5% figure was real—but it is not a current August 2026 adoption rate. Google’s Android distribution snapshot, based on active Google Play devices through December 1, 2025, put Android 16 at 7.5%. Android 17 is now the newest major release, and AppBrain estimated Android 16 at 23.9% of its SDK-monitored devices in July 2026.
What the 7.5% figure actually measured
The figure came from Google’s Android version distribution data as reported by 9to5Google in January 2026. It represented 7.5% of the active Google Play device base measured through December 1, 2025—not 7.5% of every Android device worldwide.

Google’s dashboard describes its statistics as snapshots of active devices using Google Play. That population can exclude devices without Google Play access, including some China-market phones, Amazon devices, enterprise deployments, custom-ROM installations and other AOSP-based products. Google also publishes distribution data irregularly, so a report can remain the newest available Google snapshot for months even after its measurement period has ended. How Android 16 compared with older releases
In that Google-reported snapshot, Android 16 was not the largest version. Android 15 remained ahead, while Android 14 also had a larger installed share.

Android 16 and Android 15 together accounted for 26.8% of that measured base, a calculation from the reported percentages rather than a separately published Google statistic. Android 16 itself launched on June 10, 2025, as API level 36, with the codename Baklava; reaching 7.5% several months later illustrated how gradually Android updates can spread across manufacturers and models. Why calling 7.5% the “latest” figure is misleading in August 2026
The 7.5% number describes late-2025 activity, not the Android market on August 18, 2026. Google announced Android 17 on June 16, 2026, initially for supported Pixel devices. Android 17 uses API level 37 and the codename Cinnamon Bun. Broader availability depends on each manufacturer, model and region; no comparable official Android 17 adoption percentage is established here. Details are in Google’s Android 17 announcement.
That timing matters: Android 16 is no longer the newest major Android release, and the Google snapshot predates Android 17 by roughly six months. It remains useful historical evidence about the pace of Android 16 adoption, but it should not be presented as a live universal count.

What newer 2026 data says
AppBrain reported Android 16 at 23.9% in July 2026 among devices running its SDK. AppBrain says its estimate draws on more than 100 million monthly unique users and a recent seven-day measurement period. In that sample, Android 16 was the most common Android version.

The AppBrain estimate indicates that Android 16 became substantially more widespread during the first half of 2026, but it does not replace Google’s number or turn into an official Google distribution statistic. Why Android distribution percentages disagree
Different device populations
Google measures active devices that use Google Play. A third-party SDK measures only devices running apps or services that include that SDK. Both populations can be large while still differing by country, manufacturer, app usage, price segment and device type.

Different measurement windows
A snapshot ending December 1, 2025 cannot describe adoption in July or August 2026. New phone sales, software updates and devices leaving active use can all change the mix between those dates.

Distribution data describes versions on active devices, not the percentage of newly sold phones shipping with each version. It is also different from an individual app’s audience share, a carrier’s customer base or a regional estimate.
Regional and product differences
Android adoption varies by country, carrier, manufacturer, model, enterprise policy and form factor. Phones, tablets, televisions, cars and Wear OS devices do not necessarily follow the same update schedule. Devices without Google certification or Google Play access can be absent from Google’s figures.

What Android 16 adoption means for users
The practical conclusion is that Android 16 adoption accelerated after the December 2025 snapshot, helped by wider rollouts to Samsung Galaxy and other manufacturer lineups, new devices launching with Android 16 and the normal replacement of older phones. Those are plausible contributors rather than quantified causes established by the cited datasets.
Owning an Android phone does not guarantee a particular update date. Availability still depends on the manufacturer, model, carrier, country and whether the device is supported. Android 17’s release also changes upgrade behavior as some users move directly from Android 15 or 16 to the newer version.
What the figures mean for app developers
Platform distribution is useful for understanding how much of the broader Android audience may be able to use an API level, but it should not by itself determine an app’s minimum supported version.

- Check the app-specific Android-version mix in Google Play Console.
- Review crashes, performance and feature usage by Android version and device model.
- Consider regional differences and the manufacturer update policies that affect your users.
- Account separately for phones, tablets, large screens, Android Automotive OS, Android TV and Wear OS.
- Balance the engineering cost of older-version support against the users who would be excluded by raising the minimum SDK.

Android version, minimum SDK and target SDK are different
A device running Android 16 has Android 16 installed. An app targeting API level 36 is compiled and behavior-configured for Android 16, but it can still run on older Android versions when its minimum SDK permits it. A target-SDK requirement therefore does not mean that users must already have that Android release.
Google Play’s policy requires new apps and app updates to target Android 16/API level 36 or higher starting August 31, 2026, with stated exceptions for Wear OS, Android Automotive OS, Android TV and Android XR. The deadline is described in Google Play’s target API-level policy. This affects app submission and distribution eligibility, not the Android version installed on users’ phones.

Android 16 really was on 7.5% of active Google Play devices in Google’s snapshot through December 1, 2025. By July 2026, AppBrain’s different SDK-based sample put it at 23.9%, suggesting much higher adoption but not providing a directly comparable official census. With Android 17 released in June 2026, the 7.5% figure should be cited as historical context—not as the latest Android distribution rate.
