The reliable way to run it is to download the serverfiles.zip archive that matches the exact client-pack release, run it on a 64-bit Java 17 installation, complete Forge’s server installation when required, accept the EULA, and have every player install the same pack version. This guide covers a self-hosted server, managed hosting, memory planning, networking, updates, and the failures that most often prevent a connection.

What Ancient Kingdoms 3 uses
Ancient Kingdoms 3 is a medieval-themed modpack by chickon98. Its project description centers on building a kingdom, using a broad selection of magic-focused mods, and following a hero-style progression. CurseForge lists the current compatibility target as Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. The stable release listed on September 9, 2026 is Ancient Kingdoms 3-stable-1.11.4.zip; the project page showed 260,832 downloads at that time. Download counts and release listings can change, so verify the project page immediately before installing.

Decide between self-hosting and managed hosting
Self-hosting gives you direct control of files, backups, Java arguments, and the operating system. It also makes you responsible for firewall rules, updates, crash recovery, storage, and keeping the machine online. Managed hosting trades some low-level control for a control panel, a prepared environment, provider monitoring, and a simpler installation path.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Cost pattern | Usually an existing computer plus electricity or a virtual-server bill; there is no pack-specific fee in the setup procedure. | Recurring hosting charge; the final price and resource limits depend on the provider and plan. |
| File and JVM control | Full access to the server directory, configuration, backups, and user_jvm_args.txt. |
Panel permissions vary. Confirm whether custom Forge arguments, scheduled backups, and file access are included. |
| Installing matching files | You download and extract the exact CurseForge server archive yourself. | A panel can install the CurseForge pack and selected version for you. |
| Latency | Depends on your home or VPS network and where players are located. | Choose a data-center region near most players; ask the provider which locations are available. |
| Support and monitoring | You diagnose Java errors, crashes, tick delays, and connectivity. | Support and monitoring depend on the plan; verify what is actually covered. |
| Scaling | Add CPU, memory, storage, or a faster connection yourself. | Changing plans may be easier, but available CPU, memory, and backup limits are provider-specific. |
| Recovery duties | You must create and test backups, secure the host, and restore worlds after a failure. | The provider may offer snapshots or automated backups, but retention and restoration procedures must be checked before purchase. |
When self-hosting is the better choice
- You already have a stable 64-bit system that can remain online while players are connected.
- You want to edit configurations, Java flags, backups, and logs without a panel imposing limits.
- You are comfortable opening only the required game port and troubleshooting Forge or Java errors.
When managed hosting is simpler
- You do not want to maintain a server operating system or handle recovery after a crash.
- Your players are distributed geographically and you need a data-center location rather than a home connection.
- You want a one-panel modpack installer and provider-side monitoring.
Prepare a clean installation
Do the preparation before starting Java or Forge. A clean directory prevents old mods, worlds, and configuration files from being mistaken for files belonging to the release you selected.
#1 Best Overall
- Choose one client release. Record the complete filename, Minecraft version, and Forge version shown by the project. Do not allow different players to choose different stable or test releases.
- Create a dedicated server directory. Use a new folder reserved for this server. Avoid extracting over another modpack or a previous Ancient Kingdoms 3 installation.
- Obtain the matching server archive. In the CurseForge project, select the
serverfiles.ziprelease associated with the exact client-pack version you recorded. - Keep the release components together. Preserve the archive’s manifest, overrides, configuration files, and mod versions. Do not replace its
modsfolder with the one from an unrelated client instance. - Extract the archive. Extract its contents directly into the dedicated server directory. After extraction, check that the files are not buried in an unintended extra folder level.
CurseForge listings show server archives of approximately 798.16 MB and 799.92 MB for different releases. Those sizes are not interchangeable version identifiers: an archive that is only slightly larger or smaller can still contain different mods and configuration. Treat the release label, not the file size, as the authority.
Install the required Java runtime
Forge’s 1.20.1 documentation specifies a 64-bit Java 17 runtime. Install a 64-bit build of Java 17 on the machine that will run the server, then verify that the command used by the server points to that installation rather than an older Java version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use Java 17, not an arbitrary latest version. A newer or older runtime may fail before Forge loads, even when the files are correct.
- Use a 64-bit JVM. A 32-bit runtime cannot provide the address space expected by a large modpack server.
- Check the active Java. If your operating system has multiple Java installations, confirm the runtime selected by the launch script or hosting panel. The important result is a Java 17, 64-bit process when the server starts.
Install Forge in the server directory
Some server archives already contain the Forge launcher and scripts; others require you to run the Forge installer. Follow the archive’s included instructions first. If an installer is required, download the Forge installer for the same Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge pair recorded in your release notes.
- Run the Forge installer.
- Select Install server, not the client option.
- Choose the dedicated Ancient Kingdoms 3 server directory as the destination.
- Allow the installer to download or generate the Forge libraries and launcher files it needs.
- Confirm that the generated launch scripts and the Java argument file are present before starting the server.
Forge’s support workflow uses a generated run.bat on Windows or run.sh on Linux and macOS, together with user_jvm_args.txt for Java arguments. Do not rename scripts casually: panel launchers and update instructions often expect the generated names.
Complete the first launch and EULA
The first launch is intentionally a two-stage process. The server creates files, then stops because the Minecraft EULA has not yet been accepted.
- Start
run.baton Windows orrun.shon Linux or macOS. Use the provider’s start button instead if you are on managed hosting. - Wait for the initial process to stop and create
eula.txt. Do not assume a crash merely because the first run ends quickly. - Open
eula.txt, read the license, and change the acceptance setting only if you agree to it. - Save the file without changing its name or location.
- Start the same script again and watch the console until Forge finishes loading and the server reports that it is ready for connections.
If the file is recreated or the server still reports that the EULA is not accepted, check that you edited the eula.txt in the active server directory and that the account running the server can read it. Starting a different copy of the script is a common cause of editing the wrong file.

Set memory and JVM arguments responsibly
There is no universal RAM number for Ancient Kingdoms 3. Mod count and archive size alone do not predict memory use. Player count, view and simulation settings, exploration speed, and the amount of new world generation can change the load substantially.
Where to configure memory
For a Forge installation using the generated scripts, place your Java memory arguments in user_jvm_args.txt. A managed host normally exposes an equivalent memory field in its panel. Keep the setting in one place so a later script regeneration does not silently override it.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
How to choose a starting allocation
- Start conservatively within the memory your machine or plan actually provides.
- Run the server with the expected number of players and deliberately explore new terrain, because world generation can create short-term peaks.
- Watch garbage-collection pauses, tick time, player count, and world-generation load in the console or monitoring panel.
- Increase the allocation only when logs or monitoring show memory pressure and the host has spare physical memory.
- If the operating system begins swapping, reduce the server allocation or move to a machine with more memory; assigning nearly all host RAM to Java can make the whole system unstable.
PLAYNHOST’s pack-specific page recommends starting at 6 GB for its hosted deployment. That is a provider starting recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum for every installation. A self-hosted server may need a different allocation, and a hosted plan may impose its own ceiling. Treat observed tick time and garbage-collection behavior as the decision signals.
Start the server and verify its state
After the EULA step, start the generated script again and leave the console visible during the first successful boot. A healthy launch should load Forge and the pack’s mods without a fatal error, then indicate that the server is ready. The first boot can take longer than later restarts while libraries, configuration, and world data are created.
- Keep the server window or service log available until you have completed a real connection test.
- Stop the server through its console or hosting-panel stop control before copying world files or changing mods.
- Never terminate the process abruptly during a save unless the server is completely unresponsive; an interrupted write can damage world data.
Make the server reachable
Players need the address and port exposed by the machine or hosting panel. On a home network, the router and host firewall must permit the game traffic to reach the computer running Forge. On a virtual or managed server, use the provider’s network controls and the port shown for that service.
- Identify the address players should use. A private local address works only for devices that can reach that network; remote players need the public address or provider endpoint.
- Allow the server’s configured game port through the host firewall and, when applicable, forward that port from the router to the server machine.
- Restrict the rule to the intended protocol and port rather than exposing unrelated services.
- Test from a second network or ask a remote player to connect. A test from the same machine can succeed even when the router or firewall is misconfigured.
- Share the final address and port only after the server has completed a successful boot.
Make every player match the server
Each player must install the same Ancient Kingdoms 3 release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge loader. The server archive and client instance should come from the same release family. A player who uses a newer pack update, an older mod, a different Forge build, or an extra client-only mod can receive a missing-mod, wrong-version, or registry-mismatch error before joining.

Client connection checklist
- Confirm the pack filename or release number with the server administrator.
- Confirm Minecraft is set to 1.20.1.
- Confirm the profile uses Forge rather than another loader.
- Remove experimental changes made to the
mods, config, and override files unless the administrator explicitly approved them. - Close and relaunch the game after changing the profile so the launcher does not keep an old loaded instance.
Managed installation options
A managed provider can remove most manual file handling, but the result still depends on selecting the correct release. PLAYNHOST’s pack-specific workflow is to order a server, open the Modpacks tab, choose CurseForge, search for Ancient Kingdoms 3, select the version, and install it. The page identifies Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge and gives the 6 GB starting recommendation described above.
VeryGames also advertises an Ancient Kingdoms 3 control-panel installation flow. Before committing, verify the current price, memory and CPU limits, data-center locations, backup retention, support scope, cancellation terms, and whether the exact release you need is available. Availability and commercial terms can change independently of the modpack.
Managed-host verification checklist
- The panel’s Minecraft version is 1.20.1.
- The loader is Forge and the selected pack release matches your players’ clients.
- The plan supplies enough memory for your measured workload, with room for operating-system or panel overhead where applicable.
- You can download the world and configuration files before an update.
- You know how to change Java arguments, restart safely, inspect logs, and restore a backup.
- The advertised region is close enough to your players to avoid unnecessary latency.
Troubleshoot the first connection
The server exits immediately
Check the Java runtime first. Forge 1.20.1 requires a 64-bit Java 17 environment according to its documentation. If the script is using another installation, correct the Java path or panel runtime selection and start again. Then confirm Forge was installed into the same directory that contains the launch script.
The server says a mod is missing or has the wrong version
Compare the server archive and every player’s client release. Do not repair the problem by copying a random mod from another pack. Re-extract the matching serverfiles.zip or reinstall the exact client release so the manifest, overrides, configurations, and mod versions are restored as a set.
Best Value
No launch script was created
The Forge installer may have been run with the client option, pointed at the wrong directory, or interrupted before completion. Re-run the matching installer, choose Install server, select the dedicated directory, and verify that the generated scripts and libraries appear there.
The server repeatedly asks for the EULA
Stop the process, edit the eula.txt in the directory actually used by the launch script, save it, and start that same script. Multiple extracted copies of the pack can make it easy to accept the EULA in one folder while launching another.
Players time out or cannot see the server
Test locally and remotely to separate a mod-loading problem from a network problem. If local clients connect but remote players cannot, inspect the host firewall, router forwarding, public address, and provider network rules. If nobody connects, keep the console open and confirm the server reached its ready state before changing network settings.
The server lags during exploration
Look at tick time and world-generation load while reproducing the problem. New terrain generation can create temporary spikes, and adding RAM will not correct a CPU or storage bottleneck by itself. Reduce simultaneous exploration, review server and view-distance settings, and change memory only when monitoring shows Java pressure rather than merely because the archive is large.
Backups, updates, and safe recovery
Back up the world, configuration, and any server-specific changes before updating the pack or Forge. Stop the server cleanly, copy the files to storage separate from the live directory, and record which Ancient Kingdoms 3 release and Forge version produced the backup.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Announce a maintenance window and stop the server normally.
- Copy the world and configuration data, plus any scripts or custom JVM arguments you need to reproduce the installation.
- Record the current client and server release filenames.
- Install the new matching server archive in a separate directory rather than overwriting the working copy.
- Apply only documented configuration changes, then start the new copy and test with an administrator account.
- Have players update their clients to the same release before opening the server to everyone.
- Keep the previous directory until the new world has been tested and at least one fresh backup has completed.
Do not mix a new client pack with an old server archive, or vice versa. The two approximate archive sizes published for different releases demonstrate why file size is not a safe compatibility test. The release identity and matching files are what protect a world from avoidable mod and registry mismatches.
Final pre-launch checklist
- One Ancient Kingdoms 3 release is written down and shared with the group.
- The client and server are both Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge.
- The extracted server archive is the matching
serverfiles.ziprelease. - A 64-bit Java 17 runtime is selected by the launch process.
- Forge was installed with Install server when the archive required it.
eula.txtwas accepted in the active directory.run.batorrun.shstarts the server and reaches a ready state.- Memory is configured in
user_jvm_args.txtor the provider’s equivalent and is being monitored rather than guessed. - The firewall, router, or provider network rule exposes only the required game endpoint.
- Every player has the exact same pack release, Minecraft version, and Forge loader.
- A tested backup exists before anyone invests time in the new world.
The Bottom Line
For a dependable Ancient Kingdoms 3 server, match the exact CurseForge client release to its serverfiles.zip, run Forge on 64-bit Java 17, complete the generated launch and EULA steps, and tune memory from real monitoring. Managed hosting can simplify installation, but its 6 GB starting advice is provider-specific rather than a universal requirement.
