1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA 404 from apt-get update means APT requested an index or package at a repository path that the server does not provide. The fix is to identify the exact failing hostname, Ubuntu suite, component, architecture and file, then correct or disable only the source that produced it. Do not start with --fix-missing, and do not silence the error with trusted=yes.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
For a supported Ubuntu release, the usual remedies are correcting a stale or mistyped source, waiting out a mirror synchronization problem, or switching to another registered official mirror. For an end-of-life release, temporarily changing the host to old-releases.ubuntu.com can restore package indexes, but an upgrade or reinstall is the durable solution.

APT constructs repository URLs from the source definitions enabled on your machine. During apt-get update (or apt update), it downloads release metadata and package indexes. A server response of 404 Not Found says that the exact path APT requested is absent at that hostname. It does not, by itself, mean that Ubuntu is damaged.
Read the first failing URL in the output. Its parts usually identify the fault:

- Hostname: such as an official mirror,

noble, jammyor another release name. - Component: commonly
main, universe, restrictedormultiverse. - Architecture: often visible in paths containing
binary-amd64,binary-arm64or another architecture. - File: a release index, a component index, or an individual
.debpackage.
A missing Release file is especially useful evidence: the server does not publish repository metadata at the suite and path you configured. Guessing a different codename or marking the source trusted hides the symptom without creating a valid repository.
Use this safe repair sequence first
1. Capture the first failing request
Run:
sudo apt-get update
Copy the first 404 line, including its hostname and path. If several entries fail, start with the first one because later errors may be consequences of the same bad source. The --fix-missing option can help with interrupted package downloads, but it cannot create a repository directory or index that the server does not have.
2. Confirm the installed Ubuntu codename
Never infer the codename from the release number or from a web guide. Ask the installed system:
. /etc/os-release
echo "$VERSION_CODENAME"
Compare that value character-for-character with the suite in the failing URL and in every enabled Ubuntu source. A system reporting noble should not use jammy or focal simply because a package guide mentioned it.
3. Locate every source definition
Ubuntu 24.04 LTS and later commonly use the deb822 file /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources. Earlier releases commonly use /etc/apt/sources.list. Both layouts can also have additional files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/; a PPA or vendor entry there may be the only broken source.
List the files before editing:
ls -la /etc/apt/sources.list.d/
sudo grep -RInE '^(deb|Types:|URIs:|Suites:|Components:|Architectures:)' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ 2>/dev/null
Open the file that contains the hostname from the 404:
Recommended Free Tools
sudoedit /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ubuntu.sources
sudoedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Use the path that exists on your release; do not create a second competing definition just to override the first one.
4. Check suite, components and architecture together
For a traditional .list entry, the fields appear in a line such as:
deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu noble main universe restricted multiverse
For a deb822 .sources entry, inspect the corresponding URIs, Suites, Components and optional Architectures fields. The suite must match VERSION_CODENAME. Every listed component must actually be published for that suite. If an architecture restriction is present, it must include an architecture supported by the repository and by your machine.

Do not “fix” a mismatch by adding trusted=yes, disabling signature checks or copying a key from an unrelated repository. Signature verification and path correctness are separate requirements.

5. Refresh the indexes and retry the original operation
After correcting or disabling the offending entry, run:
sudo apt update
Read the complete result. It should finish without a 404 or a “does not have a Release file” message. Only then retry the installation or upgrade command that originally failed. If one third-party entry still fails, the official Ubuntu indexes may update successfully while that one source continues to block the overall operation.
Fixes for the common causes
Mirror lag, overload or a temporary outage
Official Ubuntu mirrors are synchronized copies, not one instantaneous global server. Ubuntu’s mirror guidance recommends synchronization about every six hours, and all hosts behind one mirror name must be in sync. During that window, a mirror can advertise metadata that points to files it has not received yet, or it can be temporarily unavailable under load.
If the codename, components and architecture are correct and the failing host is an official mirror:
- Wait and run
sudo apt updateagain. - Try another registered official mirror in your source definition.
- Keep the same suite and components while changing only the mirror host.
- Check that the new host serves a
Releasefile before attempting a large upgrade.
A mirror change is a temporary diagnostic or availability measure. It does not repair an incorrect suite or an end-of-life release.
End-of-life Ubuntu release
When a release leaves normal support, its directories can disappear from regular mirrors. The codename remains the same, but the files are moved to Ubuntu’s archive host. As a recovery measure, change the Ubuntu mirror host to old-releases.ubuntu.com while retaining the installed codename and components, then run:
sudo apt-get update
Change every affected official Ubuntu entry consistently; leaving one regular-mirror entry enabled can continue to produce 404 errors. This archive contains historical packages, not current security maintenance. Use it to make a backup, remove incompatible software or perform an upgrade, then move to a supported release. Treat an archived system as temporary rather than as a security-update strategy.
Third-party repository or PPA
If the failing hostname belongs to a vendor or begins with ppa.launchpadcontent.net, inspect that entry independently of Ubuntu’s sources. Third-party repositories often lag behind a new Ubuntu codename, publish only selected architectures, or stop maintaining an old distribution.

Disable the specific file and test the official sources:
sudo mv /etc/apt/sources.list.d/example.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/example.list.disabled
sudo apt update
For a deb822 file, use the matching filename and preserve it with a non-APT suffix such as .disabled. If the source has an Enabled: no field, disabling that stanza is another option. Check the vendor’s documentation for a repository that explicitly supports your codename before re-enabling anything.
Ubuntu’s current guidance warns that third-party APT repositories are not sandboxed. They can introduce package conflicts and can break during a release upgrade. If you remove one permanently, delete its repository definition and any associated pinning in /etc/apt/preferences or /etc/apt/preferences.d/, then run sudo apt update. Packages already installed from that source may still need replacement or removal before an upgrade.
Wrong suite, component or architecture
A single character can create a genuine 404. Typical examples include a focal entry on a jammy system, requesting a component the repository does not publish, or restricting an entry to an architecture absent from that archive.

“Does not have a Release file”
This message is not a harmless warning. It means APT cannot obtain signed release metadata for the configured suite and path. Common causes are a misspelled codename, an unsupported PPA, an end-of-life release still pointed at a normal mirror, or a repository URL whose directory layout is wrong.
Use the same hostname and suite checks as for a 404. Disable an unsupported third-party source, or move an end-of-life Ubuntu source to the archive host while planning an upgrade. Do not add trusted=yes merely to make the message disappear; that weakens authentication and does not supply missing metadata.

- Refresh indexes again with
sudo apt update. - Retry the install without forcing a package version that the mirror no longer publishes.
- If the failure persists, try another official mirror while keeping the same suite.
- Check whether the package is supplied through the security archive; Ubuntu also publishes security updates through
security.ubuntu.com.
Avoid pinning an obsolete version solely to satisfy an old tutorial. Ask APT which versions are currently visible with apt-cache policy package-name, replacing package-name with the actual package.
How to inspect and edit sources without creating a second failure
Make a copy of the source file before changing it so that an accidental edit can be reversed. Preserve the existing file type: a deb822 stanza uses field names such as Types:, URIs:, Suites: and Components:, while a traditional file uses one-line deb entries. Do not paste a one-line entry into a .sources file or convert every repository merely because one entry is broken.
Search all source files for the exact failing hostname. This catches duplicate definitions, an old backup that still has an active suffix, or a vendor file that was overlooked:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo grep -RIn 'failing-host.example' /etc/apt/sources.list /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ 2>/dev/null
After an edit, inspect the complete apt update output rather than stopping when the first line looks successful. A successful official source does not prove that every enabled PPA is healthy. Conversely, one disabled vendor entry can be enough to restore a clean update without changing any Ubuntu mirror.
How to choose between the available repairs
| Repair | Support status | Source ownership | Scope | Security considerations | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wait or switch official mirror | Best for a supported release | Official Ubuntu | One mirror host; may affect all Ubuntu entries if changed globally | Retains normal signed metadata when the mirror is genuine | Usually temporary; revert or keep the reliable registered mirror |
Use old-releases.ubuntu.com |
End-of-life release only | Official Ubuntu archive | All affected archived Ubuntu entries | Historical packages do not provide current security updates | Temporary recovery; upgrade or redeploy |
| Correct suite, component or architecture | Required on any release | Official or third-party, depending on the entry | Only the malformed source | Preserves normal verification when the source is properly signed | Durable if the repository supports the installed identity |
| Disable a PPA or vendor source | Appropriate when support is unclear | Third-party | One failing repository | Removes an unmaintained or conflicting trust boundary | Durable until a documented compatible source exists |
Use the narrowest repair that explains the error. Changing every repository to an archive host because one PPA is broken creates a larger and less supportable configuration. Conversely, changing only one mirror will not solve an end-of-life suite.
Verification checklist before declaring the problem fixed
- The failing hostname is one you intended to use.
- The suite matches
VERSION_CODENAMEin/etc/os-release. - Every component listed by the source is published for that suite.
- The architecture in the URL and any
Architectures:field is supported by the repository. - No obsolete PPA or vendor file remains enabled in
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/. - The source uses the format appropriate to the release: deb822
.sourceswhere configured, or traditional.listentries where used. sudo apt updatecompletes without 404, missing-Release-file or signature errors.- You did not add
trusted=yes, disable signature verification or install an unrelated signing key just to silence APT.
Preventing the next mirror 404
Keep source files tied to the installed identity
Before a release upgrade, review all files in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/, not just the main Ubuntu file. Disable repositories that do not document support for the target release. After the upgrade, check the codename again and re-enable third-party sources one at a time.
Separate official and third-party troubleshooting
When diagnosing an error, first establish whether the hostname is an official Ubuntu mirror, a security archive, or an independent repository. Testing the official sources with the third-party file disabled tells you whether the base system is healthy and prevents a single vendor outage from obscuring unrelated package work.
Keep a recovery path for old systems
If an old installation must remain online long enough to migrate data, record its current codename, source files and installed packages. The archive host can restore historical indexes, but it should be treated as a bridge to upgrade or replacement, not as a substitute for supported security maintenance.
When to stop editing and plan an upgrade
If the codename is end-of-life, several repositories no longer publish it, or essential software depends on abandoned PPAs, repeated source edits will only produce a fragile system. Restore package access through the archive when necessary, back up data and configuration, and move to a supported Ubuntu release. A clean redeployment may be safer than carrying incompatible third-party packages through multiple release transitions.
Best Value
Ubuntu’s archive is large—about 3.6 TB for the package archive and about 50 GB for release CD images according to its September 2025 mirror figures—so an archived release is not a tiny emergency cache that will become current again. The important distinction is support status, not archive size: old packages may remain downloadable while security fixes and repository maintenance have ended.
The decisive clue is always the exact path in the error. Match that path to one source definition, correct only the fields that are wrong, refresh the indexes, and preserve APT’s signature checks throughout the process.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does apt-get update return 404 Not Found?
APT requested an index or release file at a path that the selected server does not publish. Read the hostname, suite, component, architecture and filename in the first failing URL, then match those values to one enabled source definition.
Should I run apt-get –fix-missing for a repository 404?
No. --fix-missing can help with interrupted package downloads, but it cannot create a missing repository directory or index. Correct, disable or replace the source that generated the 404.
How do I know which Ubuntu codename to put in a source?
Run . /etc/os-release; echo "$VERSION_CODENAME" and use that exact value. Do not substitute a codename from a tutorial or guess from the release number.
When should I use old-releases.ubuntu.com?
Use it only as a recovery measure for an end-of-life Ubuntu release. Keep the installed codename and components, change all affected official entries consistently, update, and then upgrade or redeploy because the archive does not provide current security maintenance.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What if the 404 comes from a PPA or vendor repository?
Disable that specific .list or .sources file, run sudo apt update, and verify that official Ubuntu sources work. Re-enable it only when the vendor documents support for your codename and architecture.
Why does apt update work but installing a package gives a .deb 404?
The mirror may have changed after the index was published, or your local index may be stale. Run sudo apt update again, avoid forcing an obsolete version, and try another official mirror if necessary.
Is “does not have a Release file” safe to ignore?
No. It means APT cannot obtain signed release metadata for that configured path. Fix the codename, URL, component or repository support, and never use trusted=yes merely to suppress the message.
Should I change every Ubuntu mirror when one source fails?
Use the narrowest repair. Change one official mirror only when it is lagging or unavailable; disable one broken PPA when that is the failing host. Changing all sources to an archive host is inappropriate for a single third-party failure.
The Bottom Line
Start with the exact 404 URL, identify its source file, and compare the hostname, codename, components and architecture with the installed system. Wait or switch registered official mirrors for transient problems, use old-releases.ubuntu.com only for end-of-life recovery, and disable unsupported PPAs rather than weakening signature checks. A clean sudo apt update without 404, missing-Release-file or signature errors is the verification that the repair is complete.
