The Anbernic RG DDS looks stronger on paper for larger, sharper screens and modern hardware; the Nintendo 3DS remains the clear choice for glasses-free stereoscopic 3D and playing physical 3DS Game Cards. The RG DDS is newly announced, and its price, release date, software configuration, compatibility, performance and battery runtime have not been established, so it is too early to call it an overall replacement.
How the RG DDS and 3DS differ
These handhelds offer different propositions. Nintendo’s original 3DS is a released system built around its distinctive glasses-free 3D display and Game Card slot. The RG DDS is a newly announced Android-style handheld concept with two high-resolution IPS panels and modern hardware specifications. Anbernic’s figures are manufacturer-reported, not independent test results.

Larger, higher-resolution panels
Anbernic lists an approximately 4.7-inch 1200 × 720 upper panel and an approximately 4-inch 960 × 720 lower panel for the RG DDS. It specifies 300 PPI and 500 nits for both. Those figures suggest a substantially sharper, larger display area than the original 3DS’s 3.53-inch 800 × 240 upper screen and 3.02-inch 320 × 240 lower screen. They do not, however, replicate the 3DS’s stereoscopic effect.

Anbernic says each RG DDS screen triples the pixel dimensions of the corresponding original 3DS screen while preserving aspect ratio. That is the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independently verified measurement.
More modern announced hardware
The announced Snapdragon G2 Gen 2 chip, active cooling and 6000mAh battery give the RG DDS the more modern hardware profile on paper. Those specifications alone do not establish which games it can run, how smoothly they will run, or how long the device lasts on a charge. The announcement provides no RG DDS runtime estimate or independently tested performance result.

Where the Nintendo 3DS is better
Glasses-free stereoscopic 3D
The 3DS’s upper screen can show different images to the left and right eyes, creating a depth effect without glasses. Nintendo says users can adjust the effect or turn it off. The RG DDS announcement describes conventional IPS displays and scaling, and launch coverage reports that it lacks the 3DS’s 3D feature. If stereoscopic 3D is a reason you want a 3DS, the RG DDS is not a native substitute.
Direct use of physical games
The original 3DS has a Game Card slot. GamesRadar reports that the RG DDS has no cartridge slot, so you cannot insert a physical 3DS card into it. The available launch information does not provide a complete software-compatibility list for the RG DDS; do not assume that its ability to display two screens means it can play every 3DS game.

Battery life: compare runtime, not capacity
Anbernic gives the RG DDS a 6000mAh battery capacity but does not state how many hours it lasts. Capacity by itself is not an hours estimate. Nintendo’s approximate figures for 3DS-family models provide a runtime reference, though actual duration varies with features in use, screen brightness, wireless use and temperature.
| Nintendo model | 3DS software | DS software |
|---|---|---|
| Original Nintendo 3DS | About 3–5 hours | About 5–8 hours |
| New Nintendo 3DS | About 3.5–6 hours | About 6.5–10.5 hours |
| New Nintendo 3DS XL | About 3.5–7 hours | About 7–12 hours |
These are Nintendo Support’s approximate ranges, not a direct test against the RG DDS. Do not treat them as guarantees for a particular unit or play session.

Can the RG DDS play 3DS games?
The available announcement and launch coverage do not establish a complete compatibility list, so there is no sound basis for promising that the RG DDS can play 3DS games generally. Its dual-screen layout is not proof of compatibility. Nor can it play a physical 3DS Game Card directly: launch coverage says there is no cartridge slot. Wait for a published software configuration and supported-game information before buying it for a specific title.
