An analog video format represents picture information as continuously varying electrical signals. The term can describe either how a signal travels between devices—such as composite, S-Video or component—or how a television system encodes color and timing—such as NTSC, PAL or SECAM. These are different layers, and knowing which one you mean helps explain cables, recordings and compatibility.
What makes video analog?
Analog video carries picture information in electrical waveforms whose values vary continuously. The signal includes more than the visible image: it also carries synchronization and timing information that lets a display form the picture. In composite video, brightness, color and synchronization are combined into one signal path.

The NIST-hosted OSAC Lexicon defines composite video as “a single analog video signal that combines a base-band luminance signal with color information by modulating a subcarrier with chroma signals, typically using one of the National Television System Committee (NTSC), Phase Alternating Line (PAL), or Sequential Color with Memory (SECAM) systems.” The entry, added January 15, 2025, credits the terminology to ASTM International’s 2025 standard (NIST-hosted OSAC Lexicon).

These names describe ways of organizing an analog signal between source and display or capture equipment. They are not interchangeable cable labels: the devices at both ends must support the same interface.

| Interface | How picture information is carried | Practical distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Composite / CVBS | Luminance (brightness), chrominance (color) and synchronization are combined in one signal. | Often uses one RCA-style video connection. The connector does not identify the recording’s television encoding system. |
| Y/C / S-Video | Luminance and chrominance travel separately. | Uses a different signal arrangement and connection from composite. |
| Component | Picture information is carried in separate components, commonly RGB or luminance plus color-difference signals. | Less signal combination than composite; check that the source and receiver mean analog component, not digital component. |
In general, separating picture information more fully can reduce artifacts associated with combining it. Analog Devices presents a useful typical hierarchy of composite, then Y/C, then component in increasing signal separation and typical quality. This is a general comparison, not a guarantee: the source, equipment and signal path also affect the result (Analog Devices, “Video Basics”).
NTSC, PAL and SECAM are encoding systems, not cable types
NTSC, PAL and SECAM refer to analog television color and encoding systems. They set technical conventions for scanning, timing and color encoding; they do not tell you which physical connector to plug in. A tape can use one of these systems while its player sends video through a composite, S-Video or component connection.

Analog Devices’ 2001 overview gives approximate common-system figures of 480 visible lines out of 525 total for NTSC and 575 visible lines out of 625 total for PAL. Its comparison table also lists vertical frame rates of 29.97 Hz for NTSC and 25 Hz for PAL, and horizontal rates of 15.734 kHz and 15.625 kHz, respectively. These are illustrative overview values, not digital resolutions or a universal identification test for every regional variant or recording (Analog Devices, “Video Basics”). Their encoding and signal relationships are discussed in more detail in Analog Devices, “Understanding Analog Video Signals”.
How to check compatibility when playing or transferring video
Compatibility depends on more than the plug. Check the recording’s television system, the player’s ability to play it, the player’s output interface, and the input options and supported standards of the display or capture device.

- Identify the recording system. Check the tape, device documentation or reliable format information for NTSC, PAL or SECAM. A connector alone cannot establish this.
- Match the playback deck to the recording. The U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) notes that the major systems are not universally compatible. Use a deck that supports the recording system, including compatible multi-system equipment where appropriate.
- Match the output to the next device. Determine whether the player outputs composite, S-Video or component, then confirm that the display or capture device accepts that specific interface.
- Check whether conversion is needed. If the playback chain does not support the recording’s standard, a standards converter or video-transfer service may be needed. A connector adapter alone does not necessarily convert the signal standard.
NARA’s guidance on identifying formats covers regional-system compatibility and conversion options (NARA, “Video Guidance: Identifying Video Formats”).

Digitization converts the analog waveform into digital data; it is not simply a matter of plugging in any cable. The capture device must accept the source player’s actual output interface and supported signal standard. The Library of Congress describes image data from analog composite sources being converted to digital component format during video-file production, illustrating that the captured signal may be transformed into a different digital representation as part of the workflow (Library of Congress, “Video Streams as Sources for Files”).
