SVG is a text-based format for describing vector graphics—not a grid of pixels—so a dedicated image app is optional for basic artwork. The available documentation supports these two main workflows, not three distinct methods.
What an SVG file contains
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) describes two-dimensional vector artwork with XML-based markup. Instead of recording the color of each pixel as a bitmap does, an SVG can specify objects such as rectangles and other shapes. Because the instructions are text, a simple SVG can be created or edited in a plain text or code editor.

The outer <svg> element establishes the drawing’s coordinate system and viewport; graphic elements inside it define what appears in that space. For example, this minimal document draws a blue rectangle:

<rect x="20" y="20" width="160" height="80" fill="steelblue" />
</svg>
Here, the viewBox sets a coordinate space from 0 to 200 horizontally and 0 to 120 vertically. The rectangle begins at (20, 20) and is 160 units wide by 80 units tall. This is a complete, intentionally simple example—not a full illustration.

- View designs in your Explorer (PC) or Finder (Mac)
- View designs with realistic 3D rendering
- Control which design formats you want to create thumbnails for using an easy preference list
- The Windows version even works with .svg and vinyl cutting files: .fcm (Brother Scan ‘n Cut), .studio (Silhouette Studio) and more
- No cd/dvd disk drive necessary - Use the included disc to install or use the included serial number with downloadable diskless installers provided by Embrilliance for diskless installation
Way 1: Write the SVG markup in a text editor
Create a new file
- Open a text editor or code editor and enter an SVG document, including the outer
<svg>element and the shapes or other graphic elements you need. - Save the file with an
.svgextension, such asrectangle.svg. Make sure the editor has not silently added a second extension such as.txt. - Open the saved file in a browser or the application where you intend to use it. If it does not display as expected, check that the markup is well formed and that the file was saved as SVG.
Hand-authoring is useful for small graphics, precise edits, or learning how SVG elements work. As the drawing becomes complex, managing its markup directly gets cumbersome; a visual editor is usually easier for substantial artwork.
Way 2: Draw in a vector graphics editor
A vector editor lets you make artwork visually and save or export it in SVG format. MDN describes Inkscape as an open-source drawing program that uses SVG natively and offers plain-SVG export. That distinction matters: an editor’s own SVG flavor can retain application-specific information, while a plain-SVG export is aimed at general SVG use.
Rank #2
Adobe Illustrator is another option. Adobe documents SVG and SVGZ among its save formats. SVGZ is compressed and is not editable in a text editor like an ordinary, uncompressed .svg file. MDN also notes that Illustrator output can have quirks that may require post-processing for broader applicability; that is an interoperability caution, not evidence that Illustrator files are generally broken.

Which workflow should you use?
| Need | Text editor | Vector editor |
|---|---|---|
| Small, simple graphic | Directly write the markup; suitable for simple shapes and edits. | Draw visually if that feels more natural. |
| Complex artwork | Markup can become difficult to manage. | Visual drawing tools are generally the more practical approach. |
| Direct control over SVG elements | Edit the elements and attributes as text. | Some editors may add application-specific information to their SVG files. |
| Portable output | Check that the file is valid SVG and test it in the intended destination. | Prefer a plain-SVG export when available, then test the result in the intended destination. |
Check the SVG where it will be used
SVG viewers do not necessarily support identical sets of SVG features or related technologies such as CSS and JavaScript. A basic shape may display consistently while more advanced styling, scripting, filters, or animation behaves differently. Open the saved file in the target browser or application, especially if it uses those features. The W3C SVG 2 specification describes capabilities including scripting and animation, but support depends on the viewer.
