The compact example is the code integration—not the entire setup. You still need an Auth0 application and deployment-specific configuration.
The five-line Hono integration
Install Auth0’s official Hono SDK, @auth0/auth0-hono, then add the middleware and a protected route:

export default appThe install command in the Auth0 SDK quick start is npm install @auth0/auth0-hono. In the route, c.var.auth0.user provides the authenticated user data; this example returns the user’s name and subject identifier.
Configure Auth0 before running the app
The code assumes configuration values for your Auth0 application and the URL where your app runs. The SDK documents these required values:

AUTH0_DOMAIN: your Auth0 tenant domain.AUTH0_CLIENT_ID: the client ID for the Auth0 application.AUTH0_SESSION_ENCRYPTION_KEY: a session encryption key of at least 32 characters.APP_BASE_URL: the base URL of your deployed app.
AUTH0_CLIENT_SECRET is generally optional, but the SDK requires it for refresh-token flow. Set credentials in the server or platform’s secret configuration; do not embed secrets in browser-delivered code. Check the repository’s configuration instructions for the settings and deployment details applicable to your runtime.
What the two middleware calls do
auth0() establishes the shared authentication flow
Mounted with app.use('*', auth0()), the SDK middleware sets up the default login, callback, and logout routes: /auth/login, /auth/callback, and /auth/logout. It also handles session encryption and cookies, makes user context available to Hono handlers, and supports backchannel logout and token refresh.

requiresAuth() protects selected routes
Use requiresAuth() on a handler that should only run for an authenticated user. The repository says unauthenticated requests receive HTTP 401. This lets you protect only the routes that need sign-in rather than applying the route guard indiscriminately to every endpoint.

Authentication establishes who is signed in; authorization decides whether that user may perform a particular action. A protected profile route may need only authentication, while an administrative endpoint may also need an organization, claim, scope, or permission check.

The SDK documents helpers for those authorization checks. For scopes and permissions, apply the check after requiresAuth(), as specified in the Auth0 SDK documentation. Being signed in alone should not be treated as proof that a user may access every protected operation.
Check runtime support against your deployment
Hono runs across multiple JavaScript runtimes, but framework compatibility does not automatically mean every SDK runtime has the same support level. Auth0’s SDK README lists Node.js 18+ and Cloudflare Workers as primary, full-support runtimes. It lists Bun 1.x+, Deno 1.x/2.x, and Vercel Edge as secondary, best-effort support. Consult the SDK README for its runtime guidance and Hono’s documentation for framework-level information.

Account for deployment-specific session and environment behavior
Request-varying environment bindings
The SDK captures environment configuration from the first request. In a multi-tenant deployment where requests can carry different environment bindings, the repository advises creating separate auth0() middleware instances with explicit configuration instead of relying on environment variables.

By default, sessions use encrypted cookies and are stateless. The SDK says that invalidating sessions by session ID for backchannel logout requires a stateful store; for Cloudflare Workers, it describes a Workers KV store. This is a deployment-specific choice, not a prerequisite for every integration.

Verify the SDK’s current release separately
The quick start’s install command does not pin a release. The npm page lists package versions, but a version number in a listing is not by itself confirmation of the latest release. Check the package’s npm version listing when selecting or pinning a version.
Auth0’s video titled “Add Auth0 to Your Hono App in Just 5 Lines of Code” was published July 7, 2026, and identifies Tushar Pandey as an Auth0 Software Developer. The video listing matches the quick-start idea: a compact middleware integration, backed by the configuration and runtime decisions above.
