AMD’s November 17, 2025 announcement said sampling of its enhanced, lidless Class Y package for the radiation-tolerant Versal AI Core XQRVC1902 was expected to begin in 2026, with flight-qualified units expected in 2027. It did not say samples had already shipped or specify “2H 2027.” AMD described Class Y qualification as being sought, not completed, and positioned the package for missions of up to 15 years.
What AMD announced—and what it did not
AMD’s roadmap is for an enhanced organic package for the Versal AI Core XQRVC1902, an adaptive system-on-chip designed for spaceflight. The company said it was seeking Class Y qualification for the package. Its schedule was an expectation: sampling in 2026 and flight-qualified units in 2027. The cited announcement gives no half-year for the 2027 milestone.

That means the title’s “AMD Samples” and “2H 2027” wording overstates what the announcement establishes. It describes planned sampling, not confirmed sample availability, and a 2027 target, not a stated second-half commitment. AMD’s announcement did not establish that either milestone has since occurred. AMD’s November 17, 2025 announcement is the source for the schedule and qualification status.

What the XQRVC1902 is used for
The radiation-tolerant Versal AI Core XQR family combines programmable logic, processing, AI and DSP engines, and high-speed connectivity. AMD describes uses such as onboard processing, digital payloads, and remote sensing—workloads where spacecraft may need to process data in orbit rather than send every raw measurement to Earth.

AMD says radiation effects for the family are characterized for total ionizing dose and single-event effects. That does not establish suitability for every orbit, spacecraft, or mission: teams must assess the device against their mission’s radiation environment and requirements. It is a space-focused component, not a consumer processor or a general-purpose evaluation-board recommendation. AMD’s space-grade Versal product page describes the family and its resources.
What Class Y changes compared with Class B
AMD positions Class Y as an enhanced space-grade package intended for longer missions than its Class B package. The duration figures are AMD’s package suitability statements, not independent validation or a guarantee of spacecraft lifetime.
| Package class | AMD’s stated mission positioning | Construction and status |
|---|---|---|
| Class B | Suitable for space missions not exceeding seven years, according to AMD DS946, revision 1.2. | AMD reported completing Class B qualification for its first space-grade Versal adaptive SoCs, including XQRVC1902, in 2022. This does not qualify the later Class Y package. |
| Class Y | Up to 15 years, according to AMD’s November 2025 announcement. | Enhanced organic substrate and more conservative package design rules; AMD said it was seeking Class Y qualification in November 2025. |
AMD says the Class Y design uses an enhanced organic substrate selected for strength and many temperature cycles. Its more conservative rules keep metal traces away from areas of high mechanical stress, adding two substrate layers and slightly increasing package height. These changes concern package construction; they do not by themselves establish that every device or mission requirement is qualified.
AMD’s earlier November 15, 2022 Class B announcement reported Class B qualification for the first space-grade Versal adaptive SoCs, including XQRVC1902. That historical qualification is separate from the Class Y effort described in 2025.
Package options and ordering variants
AMD’s Radiation Tolerant Versal AI Core Series Data Sheet DS946, revision 1.2, lists two ruggedized fine-pitch lidless package variants with stiffener rings. Both have a 45 × 45 mm outline and 0.92 mm pitch. They differ in whether they have land-side capacitors:
Rank #2
- Optimized for High-Performance FPGA Projects:Based on industrial-grade Xilinx XCKU040/XCKU060 FPGAs, with up to 726K LUTs, 2760 DSP slices, and wide temperature support (-40°C to +85°C).
- Dual Model Support: PZ-KU040-KFB & PZ-KU060-KFB Choose between KU040 or KU060 variants according to logic resource needs—fully compatible with high-speed acquisition, video, and embedded AI tasks.
- Comprehensive Interface Integration:Includes PCIe Gen3 x4, 2x SFP, 2x SATA, 2x Gigabit Ethernet, 4K HDMI input/output, USB to JTAG/UART, SD card, and user IO expansion ports.
- Rich Memory and Boot Features:Equipped with 4GB DDR4, 512Mb QSPI Flash, and support for JTAG/QSPI boot modes. Built-in SD card slot for flexible user deployment.
- FMC HPC & Modular Expansion:Supports FMC HPC (8 GT pairs, 168 IOs), 120P/40P expansion for Puzhi’s peripheral modules (AD/DA, LCD, camera), enabling rapid prototyping.
| Package | Land-side capacitors | Other stated package detail |
|---|---|---|
| VSRA2197 | Yes | 45 × 45 mm outline; 0.92 mm pitch; lidless with stiffener ring. |
| VSYA2197 | No | 45 × 45 mm outline; 0.92 mm pitch; lidless with stiffener ring and a central 7 × 7 cavity. |
The data sheet lists the ordering variants XQRVC1902-1MSBVSRA2197 and XQRVC1902-1MSYVSYA2197. A shared outline does not establish that these packages are interchangeable; board, assembly, and mechanical requirements need to be checked against the full package documentation. The data sheet also says AMD’s Class B and Class Y manufacturing flows are consistent with MIL-PRF-38535; that statement alone should not be read as a broader external certification of the complete device.

What is known about qualification and availability
AMD’s public timeline in the cited material is a roadmap, not confirmation of current availability:
- November 17, 2025: AMD said it was seeking Class Y qualification for the enhanced organic lidless package and targeting missions up to 15 years.
- 2026: Sampling was expected to begin, according to that announcement; it did not confirm sampling had started.
- 2027: Flight-qualified units were expected, with no half-year specified.
AMD’s announcement does not say Class Y qualification is complete. Nor does the cited material confirm that samples or flight-qualified units are available. Procurement and mission planning should therefore treat the dates as the expectations AMD published in November 2025, not as proof of present shipment status.
How to assess the part for a mission
The 15-year figure is a useful indicator of AMD’s intended package positioning, but it is not a substitute for mission-level qualification. A program evaluating the XQRVC1902 should distinguish among the device’s radiation data, package qualification, assembly configuration, and the spacecraft’s environmental requirements.
Quick Recap
- Check radiation tolerance data against the orbit and mission duration, including the program’s total ionizing dose and single-event-effect requirements.
- Confirm which ordering variant and package configuration the design requires, including land-side capacitor needs and mechanical constraints.
- Verify qualification status and delivery timing with AMD for the intended part and program; the November 2025 dates are stated expectations.
- Review the applicable DS946 package and ordering details rather than assuming packages with the same outline can be substituted.
