AMD has reported fast, data-center-led growth, while Qualcomm’s case for diversification depends partly on goals it has set for fiscal 2029. Neither operating story alone establishes which stock is the better buy: the answer also depends on each share’s valuation, your time horizon, and the companies’ ability to deliver.
The company materials reviewed through October 7, 2026 do not provide a matched-date share-price and valuation comparison. This is therefore a comparison of business evidence and investment risks—not a buy recommendation or individualized financial advice.

What the latest business evidence says
The clearest near-term contrast is between AMD’s reported results for the quarter ended June 27, 2026, and Qualcomm management’s longer-range fiscal 2029 targets. Those are different kinds of evidence: one is an achieved quarterly result; the other is a forward-looking goal.

AMD reported Q2 2026 revenue of $11.536 billion, up 50% year over year. The company’s August 4 release said data center represented 58% of revenue and reported a 54% gross margin. AMD CEO Lisa Su said, “We delivered an excellent quarter, with record revenue and profitability as Data Center revenue more than doubled year-over-year.” The company’s Q2 2026 earnings release provides the headline results; its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended June 27, 2026 gives segment detail.
#1 Best Overall
- Supports Motherboard Socket: AM4
- Aluminum heatsink - Pre-applied thermal paste
- Direct screw mounting to socket AM4 motherboard
- 3.5-inch 90mm fan
- 4-pin PWM power connector (9-inch length, approximate)
| AMD segment, Q2 2026 | Revenue | Year-over-year change |
|---|---|---|
| Data center | $6.7 billion | Up 107% |
| Client | $3.1 billion | Up 23% |
| Gaming | $779 million | Down 31% |
| Embedded | $977 million | Up 19% |
AMD attributed data-center growth to demand for EPYC processors and Instinct MI350 Series GPUs. The segment mix matters: the 107% data-center increase is not a reasonable stand-in for the growth of the whole company, especially with gaming revenue down in the same quarter.
Qualcomm: diversification is an ambition with specific targets
At its June 24, 2026 Investor Day, Qualcomm management set the following fiscal 2029 targets. These are goals, not reported revenue or guaranteed outcomes.
| Qualcomm fiscal 2029 target | Management’s stated goal |
|---|---|
| Non-handset revenue | $40 billion |
| Data-center revenue | More than $15 billion |
| Automotive revenue | $10 billion |
| IoT revenue | More than $14 billion |
Qualcomm also said its target implies handsets would account for about one-third of QCT revenue by fiscal 2029. CEO Cristiano Amon described the plan as “our next chapter” and highlighted edge diversification, a roadmap for next-generation AI data centers, and a move toward becoming a platform company. That statement describes strategy, not proof that the targets have been achieved.

How different are the two growth cases?
AMD’s case rests more on demonstrated momentum
AMD’s reported quarter gives investors recent evidence of strong demand in data-center products, alongside more mixed trends in other segments. The investment question is whether the company can sustain growth as it scales accelerators, related systems and software, and supply to serve customers—not whether one exceptionally strong quarter can simply be extended forward.
AMD’s Q2 filing describes agreements with OpenAI and Meta for intended deployments of up to six gigawatts each. Those are customer intentions, with warrant terms, rather than guaranteed orders, revenue, or earnings. The size of an announced deployment should not be treated as a forecast of financial results.
Qualcomm’s case depends on converting diversification plans into revenue
Qualcomm’s targets would make data center, automotive, and IoT more important to its business over time. For an investor considering that thesis, the key test is whether those newer areas produce recognized revenue at the scale management has outlined, while the handset business remains an important part of the transition. A target several years out does not establish the pace, profitability, or certainty of that growth.

Risks that could change either investment case
AMD: scaling and external constraints
AMD’s FY2025 Form 10-K and Q2 2026 Form 10-Q identify risks including intense competition, semiconductor-market cyclicality, export restrictions, dependence on third-party manufacturing and component supply, and the timing of customer demand. The company also flags data-center buildout and power constraints, uncertainty in AI-infrastructure demand, and the possibility that AI-PC adoption is slower than expected. Strong demand can create growth, but a company still has to deliver products at the right scale and navigate those constraints.
Qualcomm: concentration alongside its diversification push
Qualcomm’s FY2026 Q2 investor presentation highlights dependence on a small number of premium-tier handset customers, the possibility that customers vertically integrate, supplier concentration, and China and trade exposure. Its diversification strategy may reduce reliance on handsets if it succeeds, but the targets do not remove those existing exposures today.
What you still need to compare before calling either stock a better buy
Valuation on the same date
A business can grow quickly and still be an unattractive purchase at a price that already assumes exceptional results. To compare AMD and Qualcomm as stocks, use share prices and market capitalizations from the same date, then compare consistent valuation measures—such as price-to-earnings or enterprise value to operating earnings—using the same accounting basis and a clearly stated earnings period. A forward multiple also depends on estimates, not just reported results.

- AMD's fastest 6 core processor for mainstream desktop, with 12 processing threads. System Memory Type: DDR4
- Can deliver elite 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games

- 4.6 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 35 MB of cache, DDR-3200 support
- For the advanced Socket AM4 platform, can support PCIe 4.0 on X570 and B550 motherboards
The company materials cited above do not establish an October 7, 2026 matched-date valuation screen. Without those figures, it is not possible to say how much of AMD’s recent growth or Qualcomm’s future targets are already reflected in the stocks. Revenue growth alone cannot settle the buy question.
Profitability and cash generation on a consistent basis
Compare GAAP with GAAP and non-GAAP with non-GAAP, and make sure the periods match. Useful checks include operating income and margin, cash from operations, capital spending, and free cash flow. The available figures here do not provide a complete same-period comparison of those measures for both companies, so they do not support a profitability or cash-generation winner.
Execution, horizon, and risk tolerance
AMD’s Q2 results describe current operating momentum; Qualcomm’s fiscal 2029 targets describe a multi-year plan. A near-term investor may care more about current results and the valuation paid for them, while a longer-horizon investor may place more weight on whether diversification plans can be delivered. In either case, consider how much volatility and execution risk you can tolerate, and do not treat management targets as certain outcomes.

So, which technology stock is the better buy in 2026?
The evidence supports a business comparison, not a price-sensitive buy verdict. AMD has the stronger documented recent growth signal in the materials reviewed, led by data center, but its segment results vary and growth faces supply, competitive, and infrastructure risks. Qualcomm offers a diversification thesis with large fiscal 2029 targets, but those goals remain unproven and the company has disclosed meaningful handset-customer and supplier exposures.
To choose between the shares, first compare their valuations at one timestamp and assess earnings, margins, and cash flow on a consistent basis. Then decide whether the risk of AMD’s scaling challenge or Qualcomm’s longer-range diversification execution better fits your investment horizon. Without that valuation and financial comparison, naming either stock the better buy would go beyond the available evidence.
