If your handheld cannot use AMD’s ML-based FSR Upscaling, first check whether the game offers FSR 3 or 3.1. If it does not, a supported AMD Windows handheld may offer driver-level Radeon Super Resolution (RSR); Intel XeSS is another option only in games that include it and on devices that meet its requirements. None is a universal, identical replacement. Your exact handheld, operating system, driver, and game determine what works.
Can a handheld run AMD FSR 4?
AMD now calls the technology often referred to as “FSR 4” AMD FSR Upscaling with ML Technologies, part of its FSR Redstone family. AMD says it is available on Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 Series graphics cards, with support for RX 6000 Series graphics planned to launch in 2027. That future support statement is not confirmation of support for handheld APUs. AMD’s compatibility information also distinguishes this ML-based upscaler from earlier FSR versions.

AMD GPUOpen’s SDK documentation describes FSR Upscaling 4 as requiring an RX 9000 or RX 7000 Series discrete GPU or better; on other hardware, the API automatically selects FSR 3.1.5. Its June 2026 SDK release added FSR Upscaling 4.1 for RX 7000 Series discrete GPUs. This does not establish support on a Ryzen Z1 or Z1 Extreme handheld APU simply because it uses AMD graphics. AMD GPUOpen’s requirements and release notes are the relevant distinction.
Even compatible hardware does not guarantee every game can use the feature: AMD says it can be integrated in a game or enabled through AMD Software DLL swapping in games with FSR 3.1 or higher. Check both the device’s graphics path and the individual game’s support.

Which alternative should you try first?
| Option | How it is enabled | Best use | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| FSR 3 or 3.1 | In-game setting, when the developer has integrated it | The closest in-game fallback when available | Older technology; availability and results depend on the game and device |
| Radeon Super Resolution (RSR) | Driver-level feature on supported AMD systems | A game without its own suitable upscaler, on a supported device | Does not add game-specific temporal inputs or become FSR 4 |
| Intel XeSS Super Resolution | In-game setting, when integrated | A supported game on a device that meets that title’s requirements | Cross-vendor support is not universal; game and API compatibility still matter |
| Lower render resolution or graphics settings | Game settings | When no compatible upscaler is available | Lower render resolution can reduce image clarity |
How to check and set up each option
1. Look for FSR 3 or 3.1 in the game
Open the game’s graphics or display settings and look for an upscaling option named FSR. If the game offers version or quality presets, start with Quality or Balanced, then assess the image and performance on the handheld. The game must include the feature; installing an older FSR version does not add it to a title that lacks an integration. AMD’s support table treats upscaling and frame generation as separate features, so verify which control the game is actually offering. AMD’s FSR technology page lists the version distinctions.
2. Try RSR on a supported AMD Windows handheld
RSR works at the driver level rather than relying on a game-specific FSR integration. The basic approach is to set the game to render below the display’s native resolution, then let the driver upscale it. ASUS gives 720p output on a 1080p display as an example and notes that RSR does not affect a game running at native 1080p. Check the current driver and control software for your model, and use its own instructions to enable the feature. ASUS describes RSR as using the same algorithm found in AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution; it is not FSR 4 and does not retrofit the game-specific temporal inputs an in-game upscaler can use. ASUS’s ROG Ally FAQ explains the feature.

For a device-specific example, ASUS lists RSR among the features of the ROG Ally X (2024), which has a Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor and RDNA 3 graphics. That listing supports checking RSR on that device family where the current software exposes it; it does not establish that the handheld APU supports ML-based FSR Upscaling. ASUS’s ROG Ally X specifications describe the model and its listed features.

XeSS Super Resolution can be implemented for hardware from different vendors, but the game must include XeSS and the device must satisfy the game’s GPU and API requirements. Look in the specific game’s graphics settings, then check the current requirements if the option is absent or unavailable. Intel maintains a changing list of XeSS-enabled games, so it is useful for checking title support, not a promise that every listed title works on every handheld. Intel’s XeSS developer guide covers implementation and requirements; its enabled-games list tracks supported titles.

4. Tune resolution and settings if no upscaler is available
Lowering the internal render resolution can improve performance at the cost of clarity. Alternatively, reduce demanding graphics settings or choose a lower rendering target. Make one change at a time and compare the result in the same scene; a setting that improves average frame rate may still produce uneven frame pacing or an image you find too soft.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is frame generation the same as upscaling?
No. Upscaling reconstructs an output image from a lower-resolution render. Frame generation creates or interpolates additional displayed frames. A higher displayed frame count is not the same as a higher base rendering rate, and it does not necessarily reduce input latency. AMD lists FSR frame generation separately from upscaling, including a separate Redstone frame-generation feature. AMD’s feature list distinguishes the categories.

If a game offers frame generation, evaluate it separately from the upscaler: consider how responsive controls feel alongside base frame rate and frame pacing. Do not assume that enabling it will solve weak underlying performance or make a game feel more responsive.
How do you decide which option looks and feels best?
There is no universal winner for handhelds. Compare the available options in the same game and scene, and consider the render resolution, image stability and clarity, base performance, frame pacing, power or battery behavior, and input latency. Change one setting at a time so you can tell which difference it made. A sharper image may come with a performance cost; a smoother-looking output may not feel more responsive.
Feature labels can also vary by device and software path. Lenovo, for example, lists FSR-related scaling and sharpening options for particular Legion Go S Gen 1 SteamOS models; that does not establish that every Legion Go S, every SteamOS handheld, or a Windows model uses the same implementation. Lenovo’s model page describes its specific offering.
What details matter for a device-specific answer?
To determine whether a particular setting should be available, identify the exact handheld model, its operating system, the game, and the installed driver or graphics software version. Then check the game’s own graphics menu and the manufacturer’s support information for that precise model. “AMD handheld” alone is not enough to establish support for a feature that depends on a particular GPU path and game integration.
