Use it when several systems need the same event, or when an application needs to send notifications to people. Choose a standard or FIFO topic based on endpoint support, ordering and duplicate-handling needs.
How Amazon SNS works
A topic is a logical channel rather than a queue that a consumer polls. Publishers send messages to the topic; subscribers register endpoints to receive them. This separates the publisher from the receiving systems, so one application can notify several independent subscribers without sending a separate message directly to each one. AWS describes SNS as supporting both application-to-application and application-to-person messaging (AWS: What is Amazon SNS?).

When SNS is useful
Fanout to multiple systems
Use a topic when multiple consumers need to react to the same event. For example, an order event can be published once and delivered to separate SQS queues for different downstream work. SNS can also fan out to Lambda functions, HTTP(S) endpoints and Firehose delivery streams. This pattern avoids coupling the publisher to each consumer, though each subscriber still needs its own handling and permissions.

SNS can send event-driven alerts to email addresses and phone numbers, as well as notifications to mobile application endpoints. For SMS, delivery is integrated with AWS End User Messaging SMS. Its documentation describes configurable message types, spending limits, opt-out lists and delivery optimization; account for regional and messaging requirements when designing an SMS workflow (AWS: SMS messaging with Amazon SNS).

- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Standard or FIFO: choose by endpoint and delivery behavior
The central choice is whether broad endpoint flexibility matters more than strict ordering and duplicate suppression. A topic’s type and name cannot be changed after creation, so decide before creating it (AWS: Creating an Amazon SNS topic).
| Topic type | Best fit | Endpoint and integration considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | Use when subscribers need broad endpoint support and strict ordering or duplicate suppression is not critical. | Supports the broader set of SNS subscriber use cases, including customer-managed email, mobile, SMS and HTTP(S) endpoints. |
| FIFO | Use when strict ordering and deduplication are important for the workflow. | For customer-managed consumers, FIFO delivery is through SQS FIFO queues. To invoke Lambda, subscribe an SQS queue and configure that queue to trigger the function. FIFO topics cannot directly deliver to customer-managed email, mobile, SMS or HTTP(S) endpoints. |
These distinctions are described in the SNS FIFO topic documentation and FIFO message deduplication guidance. If your required endpoint is a direct email, SMS, mobile or HTTP(S) subscriber, FIFO is not a direct substitute for a standard topic.

Subscriptions and message filtering
An endpoint must subscribe to a topic before receiving its messages. HTTP(S) endpoints, email addresses and AWS resources in other accounts require subscription confirmation. By default, a subscriber receives every message published to its topic (AWS: Subscribe an endpoint to an Amazon SNS topic).

To route only relevant events, attach a subscription filter policy. Depending on the policy scope, SNS can match message attributes or properties in a JSON message body. The documented policy operators include string and numeric matching. After adding or changing a filter, allow up to 15 minutes for the update to fully take effect; a routing test performed immediately may not reflect the final policy (AWS: Amazon SNS subscription filter policies).

Delivery guarantees: avoid blanket exactly-once claims
SNS FIFO integrated with SQS FIFO can provide exactly-once delivery and processing only when the required conditions are met. AWS lists conditions that include correct queue permissions, the consumer deleting messages before the visibility timeout expires, no subscription filter, and no network disruption. With a filter enabled, FIFO delivery is at-most-once because some messages are intentionally excluded. Treat delivery guarantees as properties of the entire topic, queue and consumer setup—not as an unconditional promise about every workflow (AWS: FIFO message deduplication and delivery).
Security and private connectivity
AWS documents KMS server-side encryption for FIFO topics and queues. This mechanism encrypts the message body, not message attributes, resource metadata or metrics. If those fields contain sensitive information, do not assume they are protected by body encryption. AWS also documents interface VPC endpoints for private connectivity to SNS (AWS: Server-side encryption for Amazon SNS).

How SNS pricing works
SNS has no upfront cost, according to AWS; charges depend on messages published, notifications delivered and management API calls, and delivery rates vary by endpoint. There is no single rate that applies to all uses: check the applicable AWS pricing information for the endpoint and geography before estimating a workload’s cost. Exact regional rates are not stated here (AWS: Amazon SNS pricing).

Quick decision checklist
- Choose SNS if one published event needs to reach multiple independent systems or notification endpoints.
- Choose a standard topic if you need direct delivery to endpoint types such as email, SMS, mobile or HTTP(S), or if strict order and duplicate suppression are not requirements.
- Choose FIFO if ordering and deduplication matter and your consumers can use SQS FIFO.
- Use subscription filters when subscribers need different subsets of events, and allow for propagation before validating a policy change.
- Review permissions, consumer deletion behavior, visibility timeouts and filtering before relying on FIFO delivery guarantees.
