Elon Musk responded on October 15, 2026, by telling users to ask Grok to buy elsewhere and adding, “Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon.” That is a public suggestion, not an announced marketplace: no launch date, company, funding, merchant network or operating plan has been disclosed.
What happened to Grok Bot on Amazon?
A same-day Teslarati report said users encountered an Amazon error stating that continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violated Amazon’s Conditions of Use. The report described the restriction as applying to Grok Bot’s automated access, not as a general ban on people visiting Amazon or placing orders manually.

Musk’s response was pointed but conditional. He told users to ask Grok to “buy elsewhere” and later wrote, “Maybe we should start a competitor to Amazon.” Nothing in the available reporting shows that a competing store has been incorporated, financed, launched or scheduled.
Why Amazon blocks AI shopping agents
Amazon’s Agent Policy, effective for the United States in 2026, treats an agent as software or a service that takes autonomous or semi-autonomous action for a person or entity. The policy is less about whether a tool uses artificial intelligence than whether it acts on a customer’s behalf and how it accesses Amazon’s systems.

| Amazon requirement | What it means for an agent |
|---|---|
| Identify itself in every HTTP/HTTPS request | The user-agent string must include Agent/[agent name], rather than pretending to be an ordinary browser. |
| Do not disguise automated behavior | An agent cannot conceal that requests are automated or semi-automated. |
| Answer human-or-computer checks truthfully | If Amazon asks whether traffic is automated, the agent must not misrepresent itself. |
| Do not circumvent access controls | It cannot evade technical measures intended to regulate agent access. |
| Stop when Amazon requests it | Amazon’s seller notice says an agent must cease access when Amazon tells it to stop. |
Amazon states the identification rule explicitly: “Agents must: In all HTTP/HTTPS requests, identify that the request is from an Agent and disclose the name of the Agent by including the following in the request’s user agent string: ‘Agent/[agent name]’.” — Amazon Seller Central, Agent Policy.
Amazon has also framed the issue as a choice for service providers. In a public statement about Perplexity, Amazon Staff wrote: “We think it’s fairly straightforward that third-party applications that offer to make purchases on behalf of customers from other businesses should operate openly and respect service provider decisions whether or not to participate.”
Can Grok still buy things from Amazon?
The reported error indicates that the unauthorized Grok Bot access was blocked. It does not establish that every Grok user is barred from Amazon, nor does it establish that a person using Grok for product research cannot then open Amazon independently and complete a purchase. The practical distinction is between a person browsing and checking out and software making requests or transactions on that person’s behalf.

Whether Grok could regain access would depend on Amazon accepting an arrangement that meets its agent rules, including clear identification and compliance with any request to stop. The report does not describe such an authorization or provide a timetable for one.
Is Elon Musk actually building an Amazon competitor?
Not on the evidence currently available. Musk’s sentence is a possibility raised in public, not a business announcement. No sourced report identifies a corporate entity, investors, launch date, merchant recruitment effort, fulfillment operation, product catalog or customer-support organization for a Musk marketplace.
A credible alternative would have to solve several difficult problems at once:

- Merchant supply: attract brands and independent sellers with enough selection to make shoppers switch.
- Payments and authorization: let an agent spend a user’s money while proving the user granted the specific permission.
- Fulfillment and returns: coordinate delivery, cancellations, refunds and disputes across many merchants.
- Fraud and account security: detect stolen credentials, fake listings, abusive automation and unauthorized purchases.
- Customer support and liability: decide who is responsible when an agent orders the wrong item or a seller fails to deliver.
- Retailer-approved access: provide a transparent way for merchants to permit, limit or revoke agent activity.
Those are requirements for operating a marketplace, not announced features of a Musk project.

Amazon’s Grok dispute is part of a wider agent-access fight
Amazon has restricted or challenged several outside shopping agents while developing controlled agent features of its own. The sequence reported by different outlets shows why the Grok episode is unlikely to be an isolated disagreement.
| When | What was reported | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| July 2025 | The Information reported new restrictions aimed at Google’s AI shopping agents, following earlier restrictions involving Perplexity, Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s ChatGPT. | Amazon’s concerns predated Grok and involved multiple providers. |
| March 2026 | Reuters Legal reported a temporary court order blocking Perplexity’s shopping agent from Amazon. | The dispute moved beyond technical access controls into litigation. |
| August 2026 | Reuters later reported that an appeals court overturned that temporary ban. | The legal position remained unsettled rather than producing a permanent industry rule. |
| September 2026 | GeekWire reported that Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse agent; Muse displayed an automated-access notice. | Another prominent agent encountered the same basic access boundary. |
| October 15, 2026 | Musk suggested starting an Amazon competitor after the Grok restriction was reported. | The response was a proposal, not evidence of a launched store. |
At the same time, GeekWire describes Amazon’s “Buy for Me” feature for purchases on external brand sites, while Amazon’s public materials outline broader conversational-shopping work. Amazon is therefore pursuing agent-mediated commerce under controls it sets, while limiting some independent agents that approach its retail system.

What an agent-friendly marketplace would need
Verified identity and authentication
Retailers need to know which software is making a request and which person or organization authorized it. AWS describes Web Bot Authentication as a cryptographic way to verify automated traffic, illustrating the kind of infrastructure that can replace guesswork about whether a request is legitimate.
Opt-in and opt-out controls
Merchants should be able to decide whether agents may search inventory, create carts, place orders or access customer accounts. A marketplace that cannot honor a retailer’s withdrawal request recreates the conflict Amazon is addressing.
Recommended Free Tools
Clear permissions and transaction records
An agent should disclose what it is doing, the spending limit, the selected seller and the final price before checkout. Logs should make it possible to determine whether the user, agent or merchant made a consequential decision.

Payment, refund and liability rules
Agent commerce needs explicit handling for failed payments, duplicate orders, substitutions, returns and fraudulent instructions. Without a defined liable party, convenience shifts risk to shoppers and sellers.
Abuse resistance without blanket denial
Authentication, rate limits and fraud controls can reduce scraping and account abuse, but they must still distinguish an approved agent from a hostile bot. That balance is the central technical and commercial fault line in the current disputes.
What shoppers and retailers should expect next
- Access will increasingly depend on whether an agent identifies itself and accepts a retailer’s terms, not simply on which AI company built it.
- Retailers are likely to favor permissioned integrations that expose identity, authorization and transaction records.
- Shoppers should treat claims that an AI can complete purchases autonomously as conditional on each store’s current policy.
- The court decisions and access changes involving Perplexity, Google-related agents, Claude, ChatGPT, Muse and Grok show that rules can change quickly across jurisdictions and services.
For now, the concrete outcome is narrow: Amazon reportedly shut out Grok Bot, and Musk floated the idea of building elsewhere. The broader question—who controls AI-assisted shopping, the retailer or the agent provider—remains unresolved.
