Neither Amazon Prime Day nor Black Friday is reliably cheaper across the board. Consumer Reports says Prime Day prices often match or come close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals, but TVs are a notable exception: their strongest discounts tend to arrive around the holidays. For any other product, compare the exact model’s price history and its price at competing retailers before deciding whether to buy or wait.
What the 2026 sale calendar means for shoppers
In the United States, Amazon’s 2026 summer Prime Day ran June 23–26. Amazon said it featured member-exclusive deals across more than 35 categories; that is Amazon’s description of the event, not an independent measure of savings. Amazon’s Prime Day announcement also says eligible product pages can show up to 365 days of Price History information.

The next Amazon event is Prime Big Deal Days, scheduled for October 6–7, 2026. Amazon describes it as a 48-hour event with Prime-member-exclusive deals across more than 35 categories, and says eligible product pages may show up to 365 days of pricing insights. These are Amazon’s event and feature claims, not proof that a listed offer is the product’s lowest price. See Amazon’s Prime Big Deal Days announcement.
Consumer Reports characterizes the October event as an early holiday-shopping opportunity: prices may rival summer Prime Day offers and may reappear during Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Its guidance is to track intended purchases and judge offers against their typical prices and other retailers, rather than assuming October or November will automatically win. Which event is more likely to have the better deal?
For TVs, consider waiting for the holiday period
Consumer Reports says the biggest TV discounts tend to arrive around the holidays. That makes Black Friday and the surrounding holiday period a sensible time to watch if you can wait, but it is category-level guidance—not a guarantee that a particular TV will be cheaper then.
For most other products, compare the item rather than the event
Consumer Reports says Prime Day prices on average tend to match or come close to Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals. The available guidance does not establish a universal winner for other categories, nor does it provide a representative savings percentage across all products. A particular item’s price history and competing offers are more useful than the sale’s name.

How to tell whether a sale price is actually good
- Choose the exact product first. Record the model number or SKU and the price you would genuinely be willing to pay. Similar-looking products can have different specifications, so a deal on another version is not a like-for-like comparison.
- Check the price history. Amazon says eligible product pages offer up to 365 days of pricing insights. Consumer Reports also recommends price-history tools such as Keepa and CamelCamelCamel, and Deals Editor Samantha B. Gordon writes: “Use tools like Keepa and CamelCamelCamel that can show price histories of Amazon products.” Read Consumer Reports’ Prime Day shopping advice.
- Compare the same model elsewhere. Check competing retailers for the identical item. Consumer Reports notes that other stores may match prices, and that delivery timing, shipping, loyalty benefits, and return terms can change which offer is better.
- Evaluate the final cost and terms. Account for shipping, delivery, return conditions, and any membership cost needed to access the offer. Consumer Reports says most Prime Day deals generally require Prime, though some offers are open to everyone; Amazon describes the October 2026 event as Prime-member-exclusive. Check the terms of the specific deal rather than assuming all event offers have the same eligibility.
- Treat the discount label as a claim to verify. Consumer Reports warns that a product may cost the same before and during a sale, or return to a familiar discount after a temporary price change. Compare the current price with the item’s own history; a large advertised percentage alone does not show that the offer is unusually good.
- Factor in whether waiting is practical. Limited-time offers can end, and limited inventory can sell out. If the current price meets your target and the terms work for you, waiting for a possible later offer carries a risk of losing this one.
A practical decision by shopping situation
| What you’re buying or deciding | Useful approach |
|---|---|
| A TV you can wait to buy | Watch holiday-period prices, when Consumer Reports says TV discounts tend to be strongest; verify the exact model’s history and current alternatives before purchasing. |
| A non-TV item on Prime Day or Prime Big Deal Days | Do not assume the event beats Black Friday. Compare its price history and the same model at other retailers against the price you are willing to pay. |
| An offer that requires Prime | Check the deal’s eligibility and include any membership cost in your comparison. Some Prime Day offers may be open to nonmembers, but many generally require Prime. |
| A purchase you need soon | Compare the available offer’s full cost and terms with your target price; waiting for a later sale is not useful if the item may sell out or arrive too late. |
What to remember about sale-event claims
Amazon’s announced category counts and Price History feature describe event scale and available product-page information; they do not measure how much shoppers save. Consumer Reports’ comparison is broad, qualitative guidance, not a promise about an individual product. The reliable way to choose is to follow the same model across events, compare its historical and competing prices, and judge the complete offer rather than the event badge.
