Yes: Amazon moved the power button from the bottom edge to the upper-right side on its refreshed 2026 Kindle lineup. I’m glad to see it. Amazon says the change is meant to make one-handed use feel more natural and reduce accidental presses—but that applies to the refreshed devices, not every Kindle still in use.
What changed on the 2026 Kindles?
On the refreshed 2026 models, the power button is on the upper-right side instead of the bottom edge. Amazon Japan’s October 1, 2026 announcement says the move is intended to make the button easier to reach naturally with one hand and less likely to be pressed by accident. Amazon UK’s device reference also identifies top-right placement on several 2026 models.

The announcement names the Kindle 16GB and 32GB, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft families, as well as children’s and Signature Edition variants. Amazon UK separately lists the 2026 Kindle, Amazon Kids Kindle and Kindle Aluminum 2026 with a top-right button. Exact model names and availability vary by marketplace; Amazon notes that not every Kindle generation is sold in every market.

For me, a power button on the bottom edge has always felt like an invitation to press it accidentally while holding or setting down a reader. Moving it to the side is a small change, but it puts the control somewhere that seems less exposed during ordinary handling. That is my reaction, not evidence that every Kindle owner disliked the old design or that the new position has been independently tested.

TechRadar reported that Amazon VP of Design Chris Green described the bottom placement as a cost decision: “The reason why it was at the bottom originally was because it’s the lowest-cost location.” Green said the main board and USB connection were at the bottom, and described the eventual decision this way: “The long and short of it is, it’s got to go on the side.”
Green also reportedly cited complaints about accidental presses when readers used a Kindle on a treadmill, while sitting, or while resting it against their bodies. Those are interview comments reported by TechRadar, not results from a controlled study: the available reporting does not establish how often accidental presses happened or how much the redesign reduces them.

Does “all its new Kindles” mean every Kindle?
No. It means the refreshed 2026 lineup, not every Kindle generation still being used or every older model that may remain on sale. Amazon’s product pages still describe earlier Kindles with the button on the bottom edge. If you already own an older model, its button has not moved; check the specific model’s page or Amazon’s device reference before assuming where its controls are.

Amazon Japan’s announcement is market-specific: the Kindle 16GB, Kindle 32GB and Amazon Kids Kindle were listed as available there from October 1, 2026, while some Paperwhite and Colorsoft versions were open for preorder with shipment planned for November 11. Those dates can change and should not be treated as US or worldwide launch dates.

What this change does—and does not—tell you when choosing a Kindle
The button position is a useful difference to compare if you have experienced accidental presses on your current reader. It is not enough on its own to determine which Kindle suits you. Display type, waterproofing, lighting, storage and regional availability differ across the family, so compare the exact models you can buy in your market rather than carrying specifications from an older generation into the 2026 range.
Amazon’s Japan release gives battery-life estimates of up to six weeks for the 16GB and 32GB Kindles, up to 12 weeks for Paperwhite and up to eight weeks for Colorsoft, all subject to usage. These are Amazon’s claims for the announced Japan models, not a guarantee for every configuration or market.

Optional accessories are separate from the button redesign
The relocated power button does not require a new case or remote. Amazon also announced two optional accessories, each with specific compatibility:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Kindle Click: A Bluetooth remote for turning pages forward or back without handling the e-reader. Amazon says it works with Kindle models released from 2024 onward. The Japan announcement listed planned mid-November 2026 shipment.
- Magnetic page-turn cover: A separately sold cover with physical page-turn buttons, announced only for the 2026 Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition and Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition. TechRadar describes its button bar along the right edge and a pass-through for the Kindle’s power button.
Amazon’s Japan announcement listed prices of 5,180 yen for Kindle Click and 11,980 yen for the compatible cover as of October 1, 2026. Those are Japan-market announcement prices, not worldwide prices, and availability or pricing can change.
