How many Amazon employees were laid off in the Stores division?
Amazon confirmed role eliminations in parts of its Stores business, the unit responsible for its main e-commerce website, but did not give a precise count in the reports published October 7, 2026. The Information reported hundreds of retail-division workers were affected. Reuters, citing a person familiar with the matter, reported that fewer than 1,000 white-collar workers were let go. The Reuters figure is an attributed estimate, not a number Amazon announced.

Reuters reported that internal Slack posts indicated customer service and selling partner services were among the affected Stores divisions. Its reporting also suggested that other Amazon units may have been involved. These are reported indications, not a company-issued list of affected teams.

Reuters reported that employees in the United States, India, and the United Kingdom were among those receiving notices. The reports do not establish a complete list of affected countries or confirm that every affected group was part of Stores.

Why did Amazon cut jobs in Stores?
An Amazon spokesperson told The Information: “We’ve adjusted parts of our Stores business because we believe this structure will better enable us to deliver on our priorities,” adding that the company continually reviews team structures as it seeks to innovate for customers. Amazon did not specify which priorities prompted these changes or provide a detailed explanation for individual role eliminations.
How do the latest Amazon layoffs compare with the 2025–2026 cuts?
The October 2026 reductions are described as focused on parts of Stores. They follow a larger round of cuts that Reuters described as 30,000 jobs, beginning in 2025 and continuing into January 2026. The figures refer to different scopes and reporting: the October total was not announced by Amazon, while the January reduction had a company-announced figure.

In January 2026, Amazon Senior Vice President of People Experience and Technology Beth Galetti said the company was eliminating approximately 16,000 roles across Amazon. That figure refers to the January company-wide reduction, not the later Stores changes. Galetti said most US-based employees would have 90 days to seek an internal role; timing varied internationally according to local and country requirements. Amazon published Galetti’s January statement.
The 30,000 figure Reuters used to describe the broader round and the approximately 16,000 roles announced for January have different contexts. They should not be added to the October estimates to produce a precise cumulative total.
