What is the difference between an EventBridge event bus and an SNS topic?
An EventBridge event bus is a router. It receives events and sends matching events to configured targets; depending on the configuration, it can also transform events before delivery. The bus-and-rule model is useful when the event’s contents or context determine where it should go.

The difference is the primary abstraction, not a claim that one service can never do the other’s job. EventBridge’s routing can decide which events go where; SNS can distribute a message to topic subscribers. AWS documents SNS topics as EventBridge targets, so a design can use both.
| Decision point | EventBridge event bus | SNS topic |
|---|---|---|
| Primary role | Receive events and route those matching rules or filters to targets | Distribute messages published to a topic to subscribers |
| Filtering model | Event-pattern matching for Classic rules; subscriber filters for the newer Custom Event Bus | Subscription filter policies |
| Typical fit | Event-driven architectures, real-time processing, and cross-account event sharing | Pub/sub messaging, fanout notifications, and mobile push notifications |
| Can work with the other service? | Can send events to an SNS topic target | Can receive a publish from EventBridge and distribute it to its subscribers |
These are high-level distinctions. Check the precise source, destination, filter behavior, and delivery configuration for the feature and region you intend to use rather than assuming every integration behaves alike.
When should you choose EventBridge?
Prefer EventBridge when you need to route events according to their content or context, especially when different events should go to different targets. AWS identifies event-driven architectures, real-time stream processing, and cross-account event sharing among its typical EventBridge use cases. The bus receives events; rules or subscribers select which ones should be delivered.

Event content determines the destination
If an application needs to distinguish events by fields and direct matching events to the appropriate target, EventBridge’s routing model is the more direct starting point. AWS’s service comparison describes EventBridge as supporting complex event-pattern matching and content-based filtering. Before implementing a filter, identify the bus model: Classic event-bus rules and newer Custom Event Bus subscriber filters do not have identical semantics.
You need an event-routing layer for multiple kinds of sources or targets
EventBridge is worth evaluating when the architecture must receive events from supported AWS, application, SaaS, partner, or cross-account sources and route them to supported targets. The actual integrations available depend on the source, target, bus type, permissions, and configuration. Confirm that the particular integration path you need is supported before settling on the design.

Several routes need a shared event entry point
A bus gives an architecture a place to receive events and select destinations. In the Classic model, rules apply to a specific bus, match events, and send them to configured targets. AWS documents that a Classic rule can send an event to up to five targets; treat that as a feature-specific limit to verify against the current documentation and configuration, not as an unlimited fanout promise.
When should you choose SNS?
Prefer SNS when an application publishes a message and the principal requirement is to distribute it to subscribers. AWS identifies pub/sub messaging and fanout notifications as typical SNS use cases, and also lists mobile push notifications. If you do not need an event router to inspect events and choose destinations, the topic-and-subscriber model may be the more straightforward fit.

Subscribers need copies of a published message
Think in terms of the publisher and its subscribers: the publisher sends a message to a topic, and SNS handles distribution to that topic’s subscribers. Identify the subscriber endpoints and protocols required by your application, then confirm they are supported for the specific configuration. The high-level service comparison establishes SNS subscription filtering, but protocol-specific delivery behavior should be checked in current SNS documentation.
Filtering belongs at the subscription
SNS supports subscription filter policies. That gives subscribers a way to filter messages rather than requiring every subscriber to process every publication. Consider whether those policies express the routing you need. If you need broader event-pattern routing among application targets, compare that requirement with EventBridge’s rules or bus-specific subscriber filters instead of treating the two filtering systems as interchangeable.
Understand the two EventBridge bus models before designing filters
EventBridge documentation distinguishes Classic event buses from the newer Custom Event Bus. AWS advises starting with the newer Custom Event Bus for new applications. The distinction matters: the well-known rule-and-target description applies to Classic buses, while the newer model uses subscribers with their own filters and target.

Classic event buses: rules and targets
A Classic rule is associated with a particular bus. It matches events and delivers matching events to its configured targets. AWS documents retry settings for this model and a limit of up to five targets for a single rule. Check current rules, quotas, and retry behavior for the configuration you plan to use; do not assume those details carry over unchanged to the newer bus model.

Newer Custom Event Bus: one subscriber per target
In the newer Custom Event Bus model, a subscriber is one resource with filters and one target. To deliver to several targets, create one subscriber per target. Subscriber filters can inspect data, metadata, or system metadata. Filters in one configuration are combined with AND, and wildcard matching is not supported for these subscriber filters.
Those filter details are important implementation constraints. A design that depends on wildcard matching or on combining conditions as alternatives may not fit this subscriber-filter model as described. Validate the desired conditions against the current bus documentation before building around them; do not transfer Classic rule assumptions to these subscribers.
Can EventBridge send events to an SNS topic?
Yes. AWS documents SNS topics as EventBridge targets. This combination uses EventBridge to select and route events, then SNS to distribute a published message to the topic’s subscribers. It can be useful when the event-routing decision and subscriber fanout are distinct needs in the same architecture.
Permissions and encryption
The EventBridge target role needs sns:Publish permission for the topic. If the topic is encrypted with a customer-managed key, the delivery role also needs kms:GenerateDataKey and kms:Decrypt. Check the target configuration and key policy as well as the role permissions when validating a deployment; a missing permission can prevent delivery.

Batching behavior
For this integration, EventBridge’s target call uses PublishBatch. One target call can carry up to ten events, with each topic message carrying one event. Keep this detail tied to the EventBridge-to-SNS target integration; it is not a general statement about every SNS publisher or delivery protocol.
When the combination is unnecessary
Do not add a bus and topic by default. If you only need to publish a message to a set of SNS subscribers, SNS may meet the central requirement without an EventBridge routing layer. If the requirement is to select application targets based on event patterns, evaluate EventBridge directly. Add both when each service contributes a needed role, not just because the integration exists.

Routing and filtering
- Choose EventBridge as the starting point when event patterns determine which application targets receive events.
- Choose SNS as the starting point when a publisher sends to a topic and the message should be distributed to its subscribers.
- For EventBridge, decide whether you are using Classic rules or newer Custom Event Bus subscribers before relying on filter or target behavior.
- For SNS, decide whether subscription filter policies meet the filtering requirement. Confirm protocol-specific behavior in current SNS documentation.
Sources and destinations
List the actual event sources, accounts, targets, topic subscribers, and protocols required. AWS’s decision guide describes broad AWS and partner integration for EventBridge and subscriber delivery options for SNS, but that does not establish that every possible source-to-destination pairing is supported. Verify the exact combination and its permissions, especially for cross-account designs.
Fanout and delivery handling
Write down the subscribers or targets, what each must receive, and how the system should handle failed delivery. EventBridge Classic rules can have multiple targets, subject to the documented per-rule limit; the newer Custom Event Bus uses one target per subscriber, so multiple targets require multiple subscribers. SNS provides topic-based distribution. The services’ high-level descriptions alone do not establish every retry, failure, or protocol-specific delivery condition, so those requirements need checking in the relevant current service documentation.
Operations and scale
Check the quota for the specific service feature, bus type, and AWS Region. A quota figure for one bus type is not a throughput guarantee for the entire path from event publication through target delivery. Include the target’s capacity and the rest of the delivery path in any capacity plan.
Best Value
What do EventBridge and SNS cost?
AWS describes EventBridge billing in terms of events published and target invocations. SNS billing dimensions include API requests, notifications delivered, and data transferred. Those dimensions differ, so a service name alone cannot determine which option will cost less.
Estimate the workload using its AWS Region, event and API volumes, target invocations or subscriber deliveries, payload sizes, protocols, and selected features. A design that adds EventBridge before SNS should account for the relevant activity in both services. Use current regional AWS pricing for that workload rather than relying on stale free-tier figures or a universal claim that either service is cheaper.
Which limits should you check?
EventBridge quotas are separated by feature and bus type, with regional values. One documented quota is 500,000 events per second per Custom Event Bus in supported Regions; AWS’s current quota documentation, accessed in 2026, marks this quota as not adjustable. This figure applies to that documented Custom Event Bus quota only. It should not be applied to other EventBridge bus types, invocation limits, or end-to-end target delivery.
For a Classic bus, review the applicable region-dependent invocation throttles and limits on targets per rule. For any bus model, check the current quota for the feature you intend to use and the intended Region. Quotas are documented service limits, not a blanket assurance that an entire application pipeline can sustain the same rate.
Quick Recap
A practical decision process
- Describe the job in one sentence. If it is “publish a message to subscribers,” start with SNS. If it is “inspect events and route matches to application targets,” start with EventBridge.
- Specify the filtering requirement. Identify the fields and conditions that determine delivery. For EventBridge, name the bus model and verify that its rule or subscriber-filter semantics can express them. For SNS, verify that subscription filter policies suit the requirement.
- Map the delivery path. List sources, AWS accounts, targets or subscribers, and any required protocols. Confirm support and permissions for each specific connection.
- Decide whether both services add value. If EventBridge needs to choose events and SNS needs to fan them out, model the bus-to-topic path. Otherwise, avoid introducing a second service without a requirement it serves.
- Check failure and scale requirements. Review relevant retry settings, service quotas, bus-type-specific target behavior, subscriber or target capacity, and protocol-specific delivery conditions in current documentation.
- Estimate cost for the workload. Use regional pricing and realistic event counts, API requests, deliveries, payload sizes, and selected features. Compare complete architectures, including the cost of any combined path.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling the services interchangeable. EventBridge is an event router; SNS is a publish/subscribe distribution service. Their roles can complement each other.
- Applying Classic bus rules to the newer Custom Event Bus. The newer model uses one target per subscriber and has its own filter behavior, including AND-combined filters and no wildcard matching.
- Treating a quota as a general capacity guarantee. The 500,000-events-per-second figure is scoped to a documented Custom Event Bus quota in supported Regions, not all buses or target delivery.
- Assuming a target can publish without the right permissions. EventBridge’s role needs
sns:Publish; a customer-managed topic key can require the two listed KMS permissions as well. - Choosing by price without modeling the workload. Billing dimensions differ and the total depends on usage, Region, payloads, integrations, and features.
