For a typical web app on Amazon ECS, the flow is: store a built container image in Amazon ECR, describe how to run it in an ECS task definition, use an ECS service to keep tasks running, and optionally put an Application Load Balancer (ALB) in front to route HTTP or HTTPS requests to them. With Fargate, AWS manages the underlying compute capacity, but you still configure networking, permissions, task size, and application settings.
How the pieces connect
Think of this deployment as a chain from packaged code to incoming request:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Build and publish: Package the application and its dependencies as a container image, then store that image in Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR).
- Describe the runtime: Register an ECS task definition that points to the image and specifies container settings such as CPU and memory, networking, ports, logging, and roles.
- Run and maintain: Start an ECS service from the task definition. The service works toward its desired task count and replaces tasks that stop or fail.
- Route web requests: If the app needs HTTP or HTTPS access, connect the service to an ALB. Its listener and rules send requests to a target group associated with the service.
AWS’s containerized web application architecture describes the ECR-to-ECS image flow with Fargate tasks behind an internet-facing ALB. The ALB is a common web entry point, not a requirement for every ECS service.

Amazon ECR stores the image
A container image packages application code and the dependencies needed to run it. ECR is the image registry; ECS retrieves the image when it launches a task. ECR does not run the app, and publishing an image alone does not create a running service.

A task definition is the launch blueprint
A task definition is a reusable configuration describing one or more containers and how ECS should launch them. It references the image and can set resource requirements, network mode, container port mappings, logs, volumes, and IAM roles. AWS calls it a “blueprint for your application” in its Fargate tutorial.
The task definition is configuration, not a running app. A task is a running instance launched from that definition. Registering a changed definition creates a new revision, which a service can then use for a deployment.

An ECS service maintains tasks
An ECS service is the controller for a group of tasks based on a task definition. You choose a desired number of tasks; the service works to keep that number running and can connect the tasks to a load balancer. AWS’s ECS CloudFormation examples include both a simple service and a load-balanced web application.
An ALB routes requests to tasks
An ALB accepts web traffic through listeners, applies routing rules, and forwards requests to targets in a target group. It supports Layer 7 HTTP/HTTPS features such as path-based routing. AWS recommends an ALB for ECS unless the workload requires a feature unique to another load balancer type; its ECS load-balancing guide explains the options.

How to deploy a simple web app
The exact console steps vary with the architecture, but the dependency order is consistent: make an image available, define how it runs, create a service, and add routing if the app needs it.
- Containerize the application and publish an image to ECR. Use an identifiable image tag for the application version you intend to deploy.
- Register a task definition. Reference the ECR image and set the CPU and memory, container port, logging, network mode, and IAM roles the app needs. For Fargate, select Fargate compatibility and use
awsvpcnetworking. - Create an ECS service. Choose the task-definition revision, compute capacity, and desired task count. The service then manages tasks against that desired count.
- Add an ALB when the app needs web traffic routed to it. Configure its listener, routing rules, target group, health checks, and security groups. For Fargate tasks using
awsvpc, the target group must use IP targets rather than instance targets. - Deploy updates deliberately. Publish a new versioned image, register a new task-definition revision referencing it, then update the service to use that revision. Keeping the code version, image tag, and task-definition revision aligned makes it easier to identify what is running.
- Check service status and logs. Confirm tasks start successfully and that the load balancer’s health checks can reach the application on the intended port. When practicing with tutorial resources, follow the cleanup steps; related resources may need to be removed separately.
AWS provides a beginner Fargate service tutorial and a CDK example deploying an ECS service on Fargate behind an ALB. They illustrate different implementation paths rather than a single mandatory setup.

Choose capacity and load balancing for the workload
Fargate or EC2 capacity
Fargate removes the need to manage EC2 hosts for the tasks: AWS manages the underlying server capacity. You still choose task size and configure network access, IAM, and application settings. With ECS on EC2, you also manage the instances and available host capacity. The right choice depends on operational needs and workload economics; Fargate is not automatically cheaper for every application.

| Option | Use it when |
|---|---|
| Application Load Balancer (ALB) | The app needs HTTP/HTTPS routing, including Layer 7 features such as path-based rules. |

Networking, permissions, and reliability to plan
- Network access: An internet-facing ALB is a public entry point. Limit inbound access according to the application’s exposure needs, and allow traffic from the ALB to the task on the application port. Do not copy a tutorial’s broad inbound rule into a production setup without reviewing it.
- Task networking: Fargate tasks use
awsvpc. Align the task definition, subnets, security groups, and target-group type with that network mode. - IAM roles: Distinguish the task execution role, which supports launch-time actions by ECS or Fargate agents, from permissions the application itself needs. AWS architecture guidance recommends separating roles by task-definition family where components need distinct permissions.
- Health and availability: An ALB can distribute requests among targets and use health checks, but its presence alone does not guarantee availability. Task count, deployment configuration, health-check behavior, network setup, and application reliability all matter.
- Supporting resources: A real deployment can also need DNS, a database, secrets, monitoring, and logging configuration. AWS’s load-balanced example includes networking, logging, and an execution role in addition to the core image, service, and ALB components.
- Cost awareness: Load balancer charges depend on usage. Check current AWS pricing for the resources and region you select, and remove tutorial resources you no longer need.
Keep application components independently manageable
When parts of an application have different scaling needs or permissions, separate task-definition families can make those boundaries clearer. AWS’s ECS architecture guidance recommends matching application versions with image tags and task-definition revisions, updating the service to deploy the intended revision, and separating business components when independent scaling or permissions are needed.
