Choose the Echo Dot (5th Generation) if you want its reported temperature and motion sensing for smart-home routines, or need to use an eligible Dot as an eero range extender. Choose the Echo Pop if you mainly want a compact Alexa speaker and do not need those Dot-specific uses. Both support tap gestures, and the available sources do not establish a sound-quality winner or a reliable current price advantage.

Choose the Dot if you want sensing for routines
The clearest reason to favor the 5th-generation Dot is its reported temperature and motion sensing. A temperature reading or detected movement can make routines more responsive to conditions in a room, rather than relying only on a voice command or schedule. The specific feature comparison available for these sensors is secondary-source reporting, not an Amazon product specification in the sources cited here; confirm the current local product listing if either capability is essential to your purchase. If those sensing features are not useful to you, they are not a reason to pay more for the Dot. Consider the Pop instead if your main need is Alexa access in a compact speaker.

Check eero compatibility before buying for Wi-Fi extension
The two speakers have different eero-related claims, so do not treat them as interchangeable range extenders. Amazon’s support page says the Echo Dot (4th and 5th Generation) can extend a compatible eero network when paired with a compatible eero mesh router. Check your router, Echo model, and current eligibility before relying on this feature. Amazon eero support
#1 Best Overall
- Your favorite music and content – Play music, audiobooks, and podcasts from Amazon Music, Apple Music, Spotify and others or via Bluetooth throughout your home.
- Alexa is happy to help – Ask Alexa for weather updates and to set hands-free timers, get answers to your questions and even hear jokes. Need a few extra minutes in the morning? Just tap your Echo Dot to snooze your alarm.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart home devices with your voice and routines triggered by built-in motion or indoor temperature sensors. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Separately, Amazon’s 2023 Echo Pop launch announcement says the Pop supports eero Built-in and can add up to 1,000 square feet of coverage to an existing eero Wi-Fi network. That is Amazon’s vendor-published figure, not a guarantee for every home; compatibility and actual coverage depend on the network and setup. Amazon’s 2023 launch announcement
Both offer Alexa and tap gestures
Tap controls are not a deciding advantage for either speaker. Amazon lists both the Echo Pop and Echo Dot (5th Generation or later) as supporting gestures such as pausing or resuming media, ending a call or Drop In, dismissing a ringing timer, and snoozing supported alarms. Form, placement, and price
The 5th-generation Dot is a compact sphere, with Amazon listing dimensions of 3.9 × 3.9 × 3.5 inches. The Pop is also described by Amazon as a compact smart speaker, but the cited support information does not provide a comparable dimension. Choose based on the space where you will place it and the features you will use, rather than assuming one is smaller or easier to position.
Prices vary by country, retailer, and sale period. Compare the current local listings for the exact models before deciding; a past discount or an undated price would not establish which one is the better value today.

Can you tell which one sounds better?
The sources cited here establish product identity and features, not a controlled head-to-head sound test. They do not support a definitive claim that the Dot or Pop sounds better. If audio performance is your deciding factor, look for a comparison that evaluates both speakers under the same conditions and describes the room, content, and listening setup.
