Estimate viewer data from audience size, average delivered bitrate, and viewing time; then apply current CloudFront pricing for the relevant geographies and add any encoding, packaging, or origin services your workflow uses.
What CloudFront pays for in a live-streaming workflow
CloudFront is the delivery layer: it serves the stream to viewers. In AWS’s documented live workflow, MediaLive can encode a real-time input, MediaPackage can package the stream for different formats and optionally handle DRM, and CloudFront distributes it. AWS also describes using a scalable origin such as MediaStore when encoded formats are already suitable. The architecture determines which services you need; MediaPackage is not mandatory for every live stream. See AWS live-delivery guidance.
As a result, a CloudFront estimate is not a complete estimate of the event. Encoding, packaging or origination, storage, and other enabled features may add separate charges. AWS’s live-streaming cost examples break out encoding, packaging, and distribution to illustrate that distinction.
How to estimate the CloudFront delivery volume
Start with average delivered bitrate per viewer, not just the bitrate of the highest rendition. Multiply that rate by the number of concurrent viewers and the event duration. Divide bits by eight to get bytes, then convert the result using units consistent with the AWS pricing or billing view you use.

For a rough calculation in MiB-like units:
viewers × average Mbps per viewer ÷ 8 × seconds ÷ 1024
This estimates data volume, not cost. To estimate cost, align GB or TB units with AWS’s calculator and billing convention, then apply current pricing for the relevant usage type and audience geography. Mbps and MB/s are not interchangeable, and decimal GB and binary GiB are not identical; keep the conversions explicit.

Build scenarios rather than relying on one number
- Low: use a smaller expected concurrent audience and a realistic average bitrate based on the rendition viewers are likely to receive.
- Expected: use your best estimate of concurrency, average delivered bitrate, event duration, and viewer geography.
- High: model a larger audience or higher average bitrate. If you assume every viewer receives the top rendition, label it as an upper-side case, not the expected experience.
The AWS examples assume every viewer consumes the highest bitrate, an explicitly simplifying assumption that makes their estimates likely higher than actual costs. Adaptive delivery, the encoding ladder, cache behavior, event peaks, and audience distribution can all change the result.
AWS-published example costs
The figures below are AWS examples for specific events and assumptions, accessed in 2026; they are not quotes, current rate guarantees, or predictions for a different stream. AWS says prices are subject to change, so check its current pricing before budgeting.

| AWS example | CloudFront distribution | Listed encoding and packaging | Example total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Approximately 1,000 viewers; one-hour SD-540p event; US East (N. Virginia); AWS stated standard-pricing assumptions; 791 GB estimated distribution | $67.24 | $2.50 | $69.74 |
| Approximately 10,000 viewers; one-hour HD-1080p event; US East (N. Virginia); AWS stated standard-pricing assumptions; 18,017 GB estimated distribution | $1,492.56 | $13.04 | $1,505.60 |
AWS says QVBR and variable video complexity can make output bandwidth 10–50% lower than its estimate in these examples. That is an AWS qualification about the examples, not a guaranteed saving for another event. The figures also depend on the stated region, profiles, audience, and usage assumptions. Consult the AWS example and its assumptions rather than carrying the totals over to a new design.
What changes the bill
Audience size, bitrate, and duration
More concurrent viewers, a higher average delivered bitrate, or a longer event generally means more viewer data to deliver. A ladder of multiple renditions does not mean every viewer receives the highest one; estimate the average actually delivered per viewer, while retaining a high-bitrate scenario for planning.

Viewer geography and usage type
CloudFront pricing varies by usage type and geography. Use your likely viewer distribution and the current AWS CloudFront pricing page; a rate from a different region or an older example is not a universal rate.
Requests, features, and architecture
Data transfer is central, but it is not the only possible CloudFront charge. AWS’s billing guide identifies request tiers, Origin Shield, invalidations, real-time logs, CloudFront Functions, and Lambda@Edge among relevant bill categories. Which apply depends on configuration and use. Encoding, packaging, and origin services belong in separate parts of the estimate.
Best Value

Pay-as-you-go or a flat-rate plan?
AWS publishes both pay-as-you-go pricing and flat-rate plans. Compare them using the same monthly audience, delivery profile, geography, request volume, and event pattern; one model is not automatically cheaper for every workload. AWS’s public page listed the following monthly prices per distribution in its 2026 access-year snapshot. Prices, eligibility, allowances, and features should be rechecked on the live page.
| Flat-rate plan | AWS-published monthly price in 2026 access-year snapshot | Documented default allowance in 2026 access-year snapshot |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | 1 million requests and 100 GB |
| Pro | $15 | 10 million requests and 50 TB |
| Business | $200 | 125 million requests and 50 TB |
| Premium | $1,000 | 500 million requests and 50 TB; configurable Premium levels are also documented |
The prices come from AWS’s public CloudFront pricing page; the default allowances and excess-use terms are described in its flat-rate plan documentation. AWS says these plans have no overage charges under the plan terms, but sustained substantial usage beyond an allowance may result in adjusted delivery. Treat allowances as documented baselines, not an assumption that delivery behavior can never change.
For a fair comparison, assess monthly bytes and requests, viewer geography, sharp event peaks versus a sustained baseline, included features, eligibility and adjustment terms, and any encoding or origin costs outside the CloudFront plan.
How to make an estimate and investigate a bill
- Define the event: estimate concurrent viewers, duration, likely viewer locations, and a low, expected, and high average delivered bitrate.
- Estimate data: calculate viewer data with consistent units. Keep a highest-rendition assumption visibly separate as an upper-side case.
- Price the delivery: use the current CloudFront pricing page and the AWS Pricing Calculator for a fresh estimate; do not reuse a sample total as a quote.
- Add other services: price encoding, packaging or origination, storage, and any configured features separately, using the architecture that fits your source formats and requirements.
- Set a budget: AWS’s deployment guide recommends using Cost Explorer to budget and monitor costs.
- Trace an unexpected charge: check the bill’s usage types against AWS’s billing interpretation guide. It distinguishes data-transfer-out for bytes served to GET/HEAD viewers from HTTP/HTTPS request tiers and documents other feature-related categories.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube channel using uploaded recordings rather than a live camera, StreamNeo is a separate alternative to building and operating an AWS delivery stack. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the video from the cloud.
