To debut it with a shared countdown, schedule a Premiere. To keep a live broadcast running around the clock and switch to prerecorded videos on a schedule, use a separate livestream workflow or hosted service; scheduled publishing and Premieres do not create a 24/7 stream.
Choose the midnight experience you want
| Your goal | Use | What viewers get | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Make a new upload public at midnight | YouTube Studio scheduled publishing | A regular video that becomes public at the chosen time | The watch-page date is based on Pacific Standard Time (PST); check the displayed date as well as your schedule settings. A Community Guidelines strike penalty can block publication. |
| Have viewers gather for a shared debut | YouTube Premiere | A public watch page, reminders, chat, and a countdown before viewers watch together | This schedules one uploaded video, not a persistent livestream. Shorts and some formats or resolutions are unsupported. |
| Keep a continuous prerecorded feed running | A streaming transmission workflow or hosted 24/7 service | An ongoing YouTube live broadcast that can play prerecorded video | This is a separate streaming setup; YouTube’s API documentation describes broadcast resources and lifecycle, not an automatic upload queue. |
| Move viewers from live programming into a new release | Live Redirect to a Premiere | An event handoff from a live stream to a scheduled Premiere | The live stream must end before the Premiere begins. |
Schedule an upload to become public at midnight
This is the simplest choice when viewers do not need a countdown or live chat. YouTube’s scheduled publishing makes a private video public at a selected date and time.

- Upload the video in YouTube Studio and complete its details.
- In the upload flow, set visibility to Schedule.
- Choose the date and midnight time you intend, and check the time-zone setting shown in the scheduling controls.
- Save or schedule the video. Check the scheduled entry in Studio before the release.
YouTube states that the publication date shown on the watch page is based on PST. If your selected time zone is ahead of PST, the date displayed on the watch page may differ from the date shown in Studio. Confirm the expected date and time rather than assuming that “midnight” means the same calendar date for every viewer. A Community Guidelines strike can also keep a scheduled video private during the penalty period; reschedule after that period ends. See YouTube’s scheduled publishing instructions.
Schedule a Premiere for a shared midnight debut
A Premiere is the native option when “play at midnight” means an audience event for one uploaded video. The public watch page can appear in advance, so viewers can set reminders, comment, and chat. At the scheduled start, the countdown begins; afterward, the video remains on your channel as a regular upload.

- Share the watch page ahead of time so viewers can find it and set reminders.
Shorts cannot be Premieres. YouTube’s Premiere guidance also says 360/vr180 video and output above 1080p are unsupported. A Community Guidelines strike penalty can prevent a Premiere from publishing, in which case it must be rescheduled after the penalty period. Check YouTube’s current Premiere instructions for the supported setup.
Run a continuous stream that changes videos at midnight
A 24/7 prerecorded broadcast is a different production job from scheduling uploads or a Premiere: a stream has to be transmitted to YouTube continuously, and something must control which video plays and when. YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes a scheduled broadcast and a separate liveStream resource representing the transmitted video. Its broadcast lifecycle documentation explains that, when the relevant automatic-start and automatic-stop properties are enabled, YouTube starts the broadcast when transmission begins and ends it about a minute after transmission stops. These API controls do not, by themselves, turn a channel’s upload queue into an automated 24/7 video schedule. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview and broadcast lifecycle guide.

OneStream Live’s help center describes 24/7 YouTube streaming with video and says the feature requires an Enterprise plan. Confirm its current plan terms and that its scheduling controls support your intended midnight changes before committing. Its documentation is at “How to Start 24/7 Live Streaming?”.

Option 3: Build or operate a streaming workflow
You can use streaming software or develop against YouTube’s Live Streaming API, but the workflow must transmit the stream and manage the video transitions. The API documentation explains broadcast and stream resources and their lifecycle; it does not establish a turnkey playlist scheduler for uploaded videos. Plan how the feed will stay active, how videos change at midnight, and what happens if the transmission stops. Do not confuse scheduling a broadcast in YouTube with scheduling a playlist of prerecorded uploads to play continuously.
Use Live Redirect for an event handoff
If you want live programming to lead into a new video’s Premiere, YouTube’s Live Redirect can connect the events. The live stream must end before the Premiere begins; YouTube says the Premiere auto-plays after the live stream has ended. For example, end the live event before the scheduled Premiere start, not after it. This is a handoff between events, not a method for keeping one live broadcast running while the Premiere starts on the same stream.

Quick Recap
Check the video rights and the release timing
- Make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every video and audio track you broadcast or publish. A scheduled time or livestream format does not change copyright obligations.
- Check the schedule in Studio and the time zone used there; separately confirm the date viewers will see on the watch page.
- If you choose a Premiere, confirm that the video meets YouTube’s supported-format limits and that the event page is available to share.
- If you choose a continuous broadcast, verify that your streaming workflow or provider actually supports the playlist changes you need. A service’s general 24/7 claim does not establish every queueing or scheduling detail.
Troubleshoot midnight scheduling
- The watch page shows the previous or next date: YouTube bases the displayed publication date on PST. Review the time zone and the selected date in Studio, then check what date the watch page displays.
- A scheduled video did not become public: Check its visibility and scheduled entry. If the channel has a Community Guidelines strike penalty, YouTube may keep it private until the penalty period ends; reschedule afterward.
- The video has no countdown or shared event page: Scheduled publishing is a regular release. Use Set as Premiere during scheduling if you want the shared countdown experience.
- A Premiere option is unavailable or the video is rejected: Check whether it is a Short, 360/vr180, or above 1080p; YouTube’s guidance excludes those cases.
- The stream stops instead of moving to the next video: A scheduled upload or Premiere does not control a continuous broadcast. Check that the streaming workflow is still transmitting and that its playlist or schedule is configured separately.
- A Premiere does not start after a live event: End the live stream before the Premiere’s scheduled start. Live Redirect is an event handoff, not concurrent playback.
