If an Amazon.com payment fails, open Your Orders and retry or change the payment method for that specific order. If the purchase was made on another website using Amazon Pay, manage it in Amazon Pay Activity instead. A decline can happen even when you have enough money; Amazon says the card issuer must explain why it refused an authorization.
First, identify which kind of Amazon purchase failed
Amazon.com retail orders and Amazon Pay purchases on other merchants’ websites or apps use different recovery screens. Check where the order appears before changing payment details or contacting support.

How to retry or change payment on an Amazon.com order
- Open Your Orders and locate the order with the payment problem.
- Select Retry Payment Method if Amazon offers it, then follow the prompts.
- To use another card or payment method, choose Change Payment Method, select an available option or add a card, and confirm.
- Check the order status afterward. If the retry is declined again, Amazon says it will cancel the order. If you still want the item, place a new order.
These instructions apply to the order itself. Editing a card in the saved wallet does not update an already-open order; make the change through that order’s controls.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Check card and billing details
Before retrying, verify that the card number and expiration date are correct and current. A replacement card or a recent expiration-date change may mean the saved details need updating. Amazon also advises checking that the billing address and phone number match the information your bank has on file.
Updating the wallet and updating an existing order are separate actions. You can manage saved payment methods in Your Payments, but use Your Orders to change payment for a pending retail order.

Why a payment may be declined even when funds are available
Amazon Customer Service says, “Only your bank can provide information about why your payment was declined.” The card issuer may reject an authorization because of a security review, an unfamiliar or high-value purchase, a daily purchase limit, or other account-specific controls. A card that worked before—or funds that appear available—does not establish why the issuer declined this attempt.
Contact the bank or card issuer and ask whether it needs you to authorize the purchase, whether a spending limit has been reached, and whether pending authorizations are reducing the available balance. Amazon recommends contacting the issuer even if another part of the order has already charged or shipped.

Understand pending authorizations and reserved funds
Order changes, cancellations, or shipments sent separately can lead to payment authorizations. These may make funds appear reserved while the bank processes them. Amazon Pay says some banks may hold authorizations for 7 to 10 business days; that is a possibility reported by Amazon Pay, not a guaranteed release period. The bank determines how an authorization is handled and when it is released.
If the available balance looks lower than expected, ask your issuer which authorizations are pending and when it expects to release them. Amazon Pay’s explanation is on its Troubleshooting Failed Payments page.

Fix a suspended Amazon Pay transaction
- Open Amazon Pay Activity and find the transaction marked Update payment method.
- Choose Manage and update the payment method as prompted.
- Check the transaction again; once resolved, its status should appear as Processing or Completed.
This is the workflow for an Amazon Pay transaction on another merchant’s site, not an Amazon.com retail order. For Amazon.com order questions, Amazon Pay directs customers to Amazon customer service.

- For an Amazon.com retail order, check the order-specific message in Your Orders and use its retry or change-payment option.
- If the issuer confirms the card should be authorized but Amazon continues to show a decline, contact Amazon customer service about that order.
- For a third-party Amazon Pay transaction, use Amazon Pay Activity and contact Amazon Pay support if its update-payment workflow does not resolve the status.
- Do not assume that changing a saved default card will repair an existing order; change payment in the relevant order or transaction screen.
Amazon’s help pages provide these workflows but generally do not show publication dates, and interface labels can change. Issuer decisions, payment eligibility, and authorization handling vary by bank, account, transaction, and region.
