The Panasonic DP-UB820 is the strongest all-round pick in What Hi-Fi?’s guide updated 28 January 2026, thanks to its support for Dolby Vision, HDR10 and HDR10+ and its flexible audio connections. The Panasonic DP-UB820 4K Blu-ray player is not the right fit for every disc collection, though: choose a Sony if SACD playback matters, or consider the less expensive Sony UBP-X700 if its HDR limitations suit your display.
Best dedicated 4K Blu-ray player: Panasonic DP-UB820
The DP-UB820 is the best all-round choice among these options for viewers who want a standalone player with broad HDR support and connection flexibility. Panasonic identifies it as an Ultra HD Blu-ray player with 4K/HDR playback, HCX processing and HDR Optimizer. What Hi-Fi?’s guide, updated 28 January 2026, names it best overall and lists support for HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, plus twin HDMI and 7.1-channel analogue outputs.

Those connections are useful if your system needs separate HDMI connections for video and audio, or if you connect analogue multichannel audio to compatible equipment. Check the inputs on your TV, receiver or speakers before buying; having an output on the player does not mean it is needed for every setup.

How the recommended players compare
| Player | Best suited to | HDR and disc formats | Connections and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Panasonic DP-UB820 / DP-UB820EB | Best all-round option | HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision; Ultra HD Blu-ray. No SACD or DVD-Audio, per What Hi-Fi?’s January 2026 guide. | Twin HDMI and 7.1-channel analogue output; Panasonic also lists optical digital output. Confirm suffix and local availability. |
| Sony UBP-X700 | A lower-cost alternative | Supports Dolby Vision but not HDR10+, according to TechRadar. What Hi-Fi? lists HDMI x2. | What Hi-Fi? lists coaxial digital output. TechRadar notes drawbacks with some settings and menus. |
| Sony UBP-X800M2 | Buyers who also want SACD playback | Sony lists Ultra HD Blu-ray and SACD playback; TechRadar describes Dolby Vision support and wide disc support. | Check local pricing and availability. It was not among TechRadar’s top-value choices. |
| LG UBK90 | A market-specific option to investigate | LG Australia’s specification sheet lists Ultra HD Blu-ray, Dolby Vision and HDR10 decoding. | The Australian sheet lists dual HDMI, with the second output audio-only, and regional DVD/Blu-ray playback constraints. The document is marked 05/18, so verify the exact local model and restrictions. |
Choose by HDR support, not just the “4K” label
Ultra HD Blu-ray playback and HDR-format support are separate considerations. The Panasonic covers HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision in What Hi-Fi?’s comparison. The Sony UBP-X700 supports Dolby Vision but not HDR10+, according to TechRadar. If you are choosing between them, check which HDR formats your TV supports and which formats your discs use; a format name on the player’s feature list only helps when the rest of the playback chain supports it.
TechRadar describes the UBP-X700 as an affordable player with Wi-Fi as well as Dolby Vision. Its HDR10+ omission is the main format distinction to weigh against the Panasonic. TechRadar also flags some settings and menu drawbacks, so it is worth checking a current local review or manual if a particular configuration matters to you.

When the Sony UBP-X800M2 makes more sense
Choose the UBP-X800M2 if SACD playback is a meaningful part of your disc collection. Sony’s specifications page lists both Ultra HD Blu-ray and SACD playback, while TechRadar describes Dolby Vision support and broad disc compatibility. That format advantage does not make it a better value for every buyer; TechRadar did not include it among its top-value picks, and its local availability and price should be checked before you settle on it.

Check the connections and regional model before buying
Start with the ports on the equipment you already own. The DP-UB820 has twin HDMI, optical digital and 7.1-channel analogue outputs listed by Panasonic and What Hi-Fi?. What Hi-Fi? lists two HDMI outputs and coaxial digital output for the UBP-X700. The LG UBK90 example shows why a model name alone is not enough: in LG Australia’s older specification sheet, its second HDMI output is audio-only, and disc playback is subject to regional constraints.

- Consider the Sony UBP-X700 if budget is the priority and the lack of HDR10+ support is acceptable for your display and discs.
- Choose the Sony UBP-X800M2 when SACD playback is a specific requirement, after confirming it is sold in your market.
- Treat the LG UBK90 as a local-market possibility, not a general recommendation, because the available specification is an older Australian sheet with regional playback details.
