In November 2024, Amazon acknowledged reports that some first-generation Kindle Colorsoft e-readers showed a yellow band along the bottom of the display. The company described the reports as coming from a “small number” of customers, without publishing a count or percentage. Amazon told affected customers to contact customer service; a follow-up statement reported replacement or refund as possible remedies.
What was the Kindle Colorsoft defect?
The reported symptom was a yellow band along the bottom of the Kindle Colorsoft display. TechCrunch reported on November 4, 2024, that Amazon had confirmed a “small number” of customer reports and was looking into them. Amazon’s statement, as reproduced by TechCrunch, said customers who noticed the band could contact customer service. TechCrunch’s November 4, 2024 report did not identify a cause or give a number of affected devices.

That description applies to the 2024 Kindle Colorsoft reports. It is not evidence that every Colorsoft—or every recent Kindle—had the problem. The cited reporting does not establish how many units were affected or what share of owners saw the band.
Can you get a replacement or refund?
In a follow-up reported by Engadget on November 5, 2024, Amazon said customers who noticed the yellow band could contact customer service for a replacement or refund. Amazon also said it was making adjustments intended to prevent the issue in new devices. Engadget reported that owners could keep using an affected reader while waiting for a replacement. Engadget’s report describes the options Amazon stated at that time; it does not guarantee what Amazon will offer for an individual device now.

Amazon announced a redesigned Kindle Colorsoft display in 2026, describing reverse printing technology and a revised display stack. Its announcement does not say the redesign was made to fix the 2024 yellow-band issue, and it does not certify that current units are free of defects. The available information therefore does not establish whether any 2026 Colorsoft has the same problem or how common it may be.
