A tightly compressed aluminum-foil ball in a washing machine for one cycle is unlikely to pose a significant risk, according to Michelle Feng, Hisense marketing manager—but she does not recommend making it a habit. The bigger question is whether it helps: the claimed static-reducing benefit is not demonstrated, and the rationale fits a dry tumble dryer better than a washer full of water.
Is aluminum foil safe in a washing machine?
For a single cycle, Feng described the risk as unlikely to be significant. That is a qualified assessment, not a guarantee for every appliance or a formal safety certification. She said: “Putting a tightly compressed aluminum foil ball in a washing machine for the duration of a cycle is unlikely to pose a significant risk, but I wouldn’t recommend doing it routinely.” The statement was reported by Tom’s Guide on August 19, 2026.

Potential problems include the foil breaking apart, loose pieces reaching a filter or drainage system, or sharp edges catching delicate fabric. The cited guidance does not assess every washer design, so follow the instructions for your own model rather than treating a general expert comment as model-specific approval.

There is little evidence that putting foil in a washer reduces static. Static cling is more associated with dry clothes rubbing together in a tumble dryer; during much of a wash cycle, clothes are immersed in water. That makes the usual explanation for the foil-ball trend a poorer fit for washing than drying.

Feng said: “Given the lack of a demonstrated benefit, we wouldn’t recommend the hack.” The cited article does not report a controlled test or quantified result for foil balls, so there is no established measure of how well they work.
What can you try instead for static?
Manufacturer guidance suggests a few practical approaches, but does not establish a head-to-head ranking of their effectiveness.

Reduce static as you launder and dry
- Sort fabrics by material. Maytag and Whirlpool both suggest separating clothing by fabric type as a way to manage static.
- Avoid oversized dryer loads. Whirlpool advises against overloading, and also lists air drying as an option.
- Air dry clothes. Maytag and Whirlpool include air drying in their static guidance. Maytag also suggests using foil or a metal hanger on a garment to try to discharge existing static; that is a garment-level suggestion, not a recommendation to put foil in a washer.
Consider a dryer-oriented product
Whirlpool mentions dryer balls as an option for static guidance. This is a dryer-use suggestion, not evidence that a foil ball belongs in a washing machine or that dryer balls outperform other approaches. See Whirlpool’s guidance on removing static from clothes.

What should you do before trying the trend?
Skip routine foil-ball use: the cited expert sees no demonstrated benefit and identifies plausible ways loose or sharp foil could cause trouble. For advice specific to your machine, check its owner’s manual. To address static, start with fabric sorting or air drying, and treat other manufacturer-mentioned options as suggestions rather than proven rankings. Maytag’s static-reduction guidance includes sorting, air drying, and trying metal on an already-static garment.
