1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsShort answer: there is no alternative established by the cited documentation as a supported way to boot a BitLocker-encrypted Windows VHD. Ventoy documents general Windows VHD(x) boot, but not encrypted VHD contents. Microsoft’s native VHDX boot documentation explicitly rules out BitLocker on volumes inside the VHD and on the host volume containing VHDX files used for native boot. The key question is therefore not simply which boot tool to use, but exactly which volume or container is encrypted.
What “booting an encrypted Windows VHD” can mean
There are at least two distinct encryption arrangements: BitLocker may protect a Windows volume inside the virtual disk, or it may protect the physical host volume where the VHDX file is stored. A third possibility is an encrypted container or removable drive used to carry the image. A boot method that can read an ordinary VHD or VHDX is not, by that fact alone, documented to unlock or boot any of these encrypted arrangements.

Before choosing software, identify the encrypted layer and the boot flow you need: starting an already-installed Windows system in a virtual disk is different from starting Windows Setup from an ISO.

What Ventoy’s Windows VHD plugin documents
Ventoy’s Windows VHD Boot Plugin says it can boot Windows 7 and later from fixed or dynamic VHD(x) images in Legacy BIOS or UEFI modes. It describes general VHD(x) boot, not BitLocker-encrypted VHD contents or an encrypted container holding the image. Its documentation therefore does not establish that the plugin meets the encrypted-VHD requirement.

Plugin conditions and caveats
- The plugin image,
ventoy_vhdboot.img, must be placed in theventoydirectory on Ventoy’s large partition. - The plugin documentation says Windows 10 version 1803 and earlier require NTFS for the partition storing the VHD(x); Windows 10 version 1809 and later can also use exFAT. These are version-sensitive project instructions, so check the current plugin page for applicable conditions.
- In UEFI mode, the plugin supports only 64-bit Windows.
- Ventoy recommends confirming that the VHD(x) boots through a traditional method first. It also warns that boot-manager compatibility can vary and suggests trying different plugin image versions when needed.
Windows native VHDX boot is not a BitLocker workaround
Microsoft describes native boot as installing Windows to a VHDX and adding a Windows boot entry so the computer can start that installation. For Windows 10 or later, Microsoft’s boot-to-VHD guidance requires VHDX rather than the older VHD format. Its deployment instructions use tools including DiskPart and BCDBoot.
However, Microsoft’s native-boot deployment documentation states: “Windows BitLocker Drive Encryption cannot be used to encrypt the host volume that contains VHDX files that are used for native VHDX boot, and BitLocker cannot be used on volumes that are contained inside a VHD.” That makes this documented native-boot route unsuitable when either of those is the required BitLocker arrangement; it should not be presented as a solution to the encrypted-VHD problem.

Microsoft’s deployment workflow is relevant only if native VHDX boot itself is suitable and those BitLocker restrictions are acceptable. The documented process calls for a technician PC with Windows ADK tools, a generalized Windows image, a bootable Windows PE drive, and at least 30 GB of free space on the destination device. The documentation includes UEFI and BIOS boot-entry examples.

Why WIMBOOT and Windows installer USB tools are different
Ventoy’s WIMBOOT plugin is an alternate way to boot official Windows ISO files when Ventoy’s default ISO route has a problem. It addresses Windows installation media, not booting an installed Windows system from an encrypted VHD.

Likewise, a generic Windows installer or USB-creation tool may create or launch installation media; that does not show that it can start the reader’s existing Windows VHD, much less unlock its BitLocker-encrypted contents. The cited documentation establishes no such encrypted-VHD solution through these routes.

- Enhanced security: Lexar DataShield protects files, easily creates a password-protected safe with auto-encryption; Files deleted from the safe are securely erased and can't be recovered
- What is being started? An installed Windows system in a VHD/VHDX, or Windows Setup from an ISO?
- What is encrypted? The Windows volume inside the virtual disk, the physical host volume containing the image, or another container?
- Which image and firmware? Confirm VHD versus VHDX, fixed versus dynamic allocation, and Legacy BIOS versus UEFI support.
- What setup does it require? Check for a boot-entry change, plugin files, filesystem requirements, and boot-manager compatibility qualifications.
- Does the documentation name your encryption arrangement? General VHD boot support is not proof of BitLocker compatibility.
BitLocker’s behavior also depends on the boot configuration. Microsoft explains that BitLocker checks security-sensitive Boot Configuration Data (BCD) settings during startup and describes the roles of TPM and startup authentication. Changes to boot files or entries can affect integrity checks or lead to recovery prompts depending on configuration and policy; do not assume boot configuration changes are neutral. See Microsoft’s BCD settings and BitLocker and BitLocker overview documentation.
